Does anybody have any clue as to how it got started?

I heard 1 story, at either a AX or Fanime Masq. there was a HORRIBLE sketch, and the people left state out of embarrassment, all that was left on stage was a chair, so the crowded started cheering for it.

I have no idea if this is true or not.

My 1st Anime con was AX00, and I didn't get into Cosplay until AX01, so I think it all started up before that time.

It's in michigan.
That's basically what happened, only there wasn't the leaving of embarrassment part. The chair would be left on stage after people were done and at one point everyone started cheering for it and the guy brought it back. It was fun at the time, but then everyone used it too much.

Sorry to not make it interesting, if it helps there was a sailor moon sketch that had me rollin' because they did a lip-synch/dance skit and at the end when they were all going off Mercury stayed on to blow kisses or some shit, and when Sailor Moon went to pull her away she either fell forward and revealed panties or sailor moon stepped on the skirt and it ripped, but either way it was amazing.

I heard it died out because people were threatened to be kicked outside if they yelled 'CHAIR' again.

Otakon 2001 is when it started. The story already given was close; A chair was left on stage before a skit (for set up), and they were taking a while to get on stage for whatever reason, so people started chanting for the chair.
I first heard it... well, at my first con, Otakon 02. And kept hearing it through 2003... came back a bit in 2005... haven't heard it since.

God forbid the newfags catch wind and start a resurgence.

At A-Kon people were randomly yelling "Butt-scratcher?" And people would echo them. Any idea on where/how that one started?
