/cgl/, I want to hear stories about RUSHING to finish a cosplay on time. I know we all do it or at least have done it once in our cosplay 'careers'. So what happened? Was it a disaster or did it work fine? Did you die the day of the con thanks to not sleeping the night before? I WANT TO KNOW.

alternatively, what's the fastest you've ever made an entire cosplay in, including purchase of fabric/wig/etc. Obviously if you reused a wig that was lying around you don't have to include that in when it was purchased/etc.

    PICS ENCOURAGED.

    but pic unrelated. gogogogogo

The day I met my girlfriend, we and a few mutual friends were going to a cosplay event (not a con) and my first impression of her was "Oh god, she's one of those people who're ALWAYS LATE" because she met us an hour late because she'd spent the entire morning making her costume. It was made of fleece and recycled white pants and held together by fabric glue. And it didn't look bad.

For a con earlier this year I waited until the last minute to start my DMC Lady costume, which was a bad idea but I thought I could handle everything.I had to rush order my wig, boots, and gloves, then scavenge Goodwill to find a decent shirt I could alter. Rushed to paint the boots the accurate color, then spent an entire weekend sewing, painting and constructing her belts and ammo packs. I wont even begin to mention what I did for her gun, never again will I wait that long to start construction on a cannon.

But in the end everything came out great, apparently I work great under pressure.

I made Lilith in a week, did most of it riiight before the con due to my sewing machine bitching out. It was sort of alright, but I would never wear it again without fixing it.

Coming close to con, I finally played Apollo Justice and fell in love with Klavier. I knew I couldn't cosplay his present self, but thought I could pull off his younger self. . .and he basically wears regular clothes how hard could it be?

I scrapped one costume I was working on and tried to focus on his. I ordered everything, it all came in pretty close to con. I had a hard time finding the right style of pants to fit and somehow managed to find some within a week before the con.

I was frustrated with getting chains and really hate what I ended up using, but I kept telling myself it would have to do so close to con and I can fix it if I want to cosplay him again later.

I fell in love with the shirt I ordered and decided against painting his G-wave symbols and used a gold metalic tape that I could pull off later. . .because I am a dumbass.

So of course, during the con. . .someone hugged me and they ripped off one of the g-wave symbols right in half. I also had forgotten the metalic tape at home so I couldn't just replace it during the con. I wore my badge where it was to try and hide the fact that I was missing one.

I kind of felt bad at some points wearing the cosplay because normally I put more effort into costumes. Oh well.

Pic related, that's me on the far left.

The day before I left for Sakura-con this year, I still hadn't finished the pauldrons for my Zack getup.

Turns out I didn't have any black spray-paint, regardless of me thinking I did, and it turns out to be about 9PM. So I google for places that are open at this time that sell spray-paint, get nothing but Home Depot. They say they have the stuff online, and in stock at the store closest to me (which is about a 10 mile bike ride), but it's the best there is,I pedal like a beast, make it to the place in half the time it should've taken me usually, and what am I told when I get there?

    "I'm sorry, we don't carry any spray-paint."
    "What? Why?"
"It's illegal to sell it in the city of Chicago."

So I get back to my place, sweating like a waterfall, wrack my head for a good hour or so trying to figure something out, until I realize.

Hey, these pauldrons are foam. I can use ink.

So I used ink and it worked out alright after some matte spray.

    And things were good.

I have always been known for cutting it really close time wise when I cosplay usually because I can't decide who to goes as until a month before the con. Hell, one year I switched Kuroshitsuji costumes suddenly two weeks before.

The worse though was this ACen a week ago. Had been planning my Leonardo cosplay a few months ahead, slowing buying things and stuff since a lot of it was damn expensive. But then, I just stopped and completely put it off. A lot of personal issues came up and school became top priority. I attempted over and over to start actually sewing but I had lost all motivation. Jump ahead a week before the con and I was in complete panic mode. I attempted to make do with the materials that I had and cut corners. It came down to the night before with me staying up till 3 sewing. I just realized then that there was no way in hell I could finish so I stopped and pathetically, cried. That con had literally been the only thing I was looking forward to through the shittiest year of my life and I screwed it up.

Sucks man and I now I know better. Still, worse ACen and being alone the entire time made it worse.

    what pic?

Anyway, very recently I made a shitty Haruhi Suzumiya cosplay for a small cosplay picnic thing. I figured it was easy and I thought I had the right colored fabric lying around somewhere, and I didn't need a wig for such a small event, so I just went at it the night before at like 3 in the morning. Made it in <3 hours from conception to finish.

I guess I'll post a picture for the lulz, but it's pretty bad. And the picture is something off my webcam.

In other news, I made my really, really, REALLY shitty Mizune cosplay about 3 days before Connecticon last year. Fabric was fraying everywhere (didn't have enough fabric for what I needed, didn't have time to run anywhere, sacrificed hemming/lining.) Borrowed a wig from a friend and I was good to go. Except I wasn't really because it sucked ass. Not sharing pictures of that, I'm too ashamed.

Many years ago I made two sailor moon costumes for my friends in one weekend. I had very little sewing experience, and it was all stretch satin and shit. They provided the materials and pattern and helped with some of the cutting, but I did all the sewing.
They came out surprisingly decent though. Most of the shitty workmanship was on the inside, so on the surface they looked pretty good.
I also threw together a school uniform top for myself (already had a skirt).

I have only ever pulled one all nighter in the name of cosplay and I refuse to ever do it again. It was a group cosplay, MKR, and although we started a good 2 months out from the con we still had so much shit left to do the last week. We all stayed up all night the Thursday before the con, worked until about 2 pm on the friday, drove 4 hours to the con, worked until 2am. I went to bed, got up at 7am and continued to work until the cosplay contest. We were finished because we ran out of time...
It was a terrible experience, I ended up not enjoying myself at all and I refuse to ever do it again. if it's 2am the day before the con and my shit is not to the point where it can reasonably be finished then I quit. I can't even bring myself to wear the costume anymore, it just pisses me off when I look at it.

Fastest I've ever made a costume was in a week.

I'm sort of faggoty and new, so it's still a bit nerve wracking for me (though not impossible). I already had to put off my Grell cosplay despite spending a really large hunk of money on the wig because I didn't have time. It's not so much that it will be difficult to do, it's just finding away to get the materials and items I need to complete it by tomorrow.

    >>3004274
Yeah, her character design is really simple so my friend and I decided to go as ghetto!Parappa and br00tal!Lammy, though I think he might be pussying out on me and doing normal Parappa. I'm going to have a ripped shirt, leather arm bands, dripping mascara, putting spikes on her watch and electric tape on her shoes, her happy flower logo will have a scowl, piercings in her little lamb ears and so forth.

    tldr; metal
I still can't decide if I'm going to use her original baggy pants (which I already have) and just rip them up and wear fishnets underneath or wear skinny jeans to seem more raawk, but I'm afraid if I do the second people will be OMG DAT IS SO INACCURATE despite all the other horrible things I'm doing to it.

    nooo~

Just thought it might be a funny sort of inside joke cosplay for the 10/100 people who recognize me, anyway.

Or maybe it's a retarded idea.

I tore apart a denim jacket and did some stitch witchery on it about two weeks before my first con, and I hit Goodwill and Wal-Mart as well for the rest of it. The jacket didn't turn out so well, but I made improvements later.

<---- These things I got started on relatively early for my second con. I wasted a lot of time and money on them, though, first on manacles that ended up too short to properly stay on my wrists, so I had to tie them on. Secondly, I tried to spray-paint a yellow plastic chain silver. That took me several days.

(Word of advice, folks: DON'T try spray-painting a chain. It WON'T end well.)

I finally found a place online that sold plastic chains, bored huge holes into the manacles, glued the chains in, and made clay attachments, using the spray paint to paint them. I was not happy with how long they took. I was really rushing toward the end.

This is one of my favorite pics of all time. Fantastic work, especially for 4 days.

My Big Daddy costume was still being worked on the day of the DragonCon costume contest. At 3am, I was working on the blood spattering and weathering in my kitchen... there are still red dots on the walls if you look close enough.

The culmination of the 7-week marathon was hot-gluing the pants to the inside of the suit before loading it into the car, and thoroughly burning the shit out of my hands. I had to leave out SO many details in the end, and we were so late to the con we had to pretty much beg to be let into the costume contest.

Exhausted, starving, injured, dehydrated and sleep deprived. Good times.

Thank you so much!!! (pic related, my face when I got a compliment from Volpin)
And I'm impressed that even you have time issues, especially with Big Daddy... that cosplay is god tier!

    Thanks so much!
Actually the fabric is for curtains... They didn't have fabric for clothes that had the right colour. *coughs*

10 minutes to make a messenger-type bag. It worked for a prop... barely.

Never again. I'm getting started early this year (she lied to herself).

Made a Stein (Soul Eater) costume in three days. In addition to having to be in class most of the day.

It turned out pretty well, apart from me accidentally sewing the sleeves on BACKWARDS and only noticing after I had already put the giant black stitches on. I like how the screw came out though (even though it didn't click).

The worst part? I had bought the fabric and wig about five months before. I procrastinated that much.

I am never trying to do that complex of a costume in 9 days EVER again. at least we all looked great!!! (and being grumpy was in character for me lol)

My problem is that I buy stuff way ahead of time and I don't work on it until the last possible second. I did *finish* a really large ballgown type of costume in about 3 days. The craftsmanship on the inside of the dress wasn't great, but it can be fixed easily. I don't plan on competing in it anytime soon, so I wasn't rushed to make everything perfect, but it is one of my nicer costumes. :3

I once made an artbook Trinity Blood costume in 65 hours.

I was crazy by the end of it, holy shit. Never again. I'm pacing myself this time.
