To put it in as little words as possible:

Day 2: People audition to be a finalist for the show on the next day. Last year we had 55+ people audition. 10 were selected as finalists by a panel of 3 judges.

Day 3: The finalists are divided into two groups. 1 group may consist of 4-6 finalists. Each finalist takes turns performing a 5-10 minute stand up routine. After each routine, a panel of 3 judges critique their performance like American Idol. They have no voting power, but their critique helps influence the crowd to sway them, the same way Idol does irl. After the first group is finished, the first group of finalists are lined up, and the audience selects 1 person to move on to the grand finale. The way the audience selects this is with a clap-o-meter. The more the audience claps for you, the better. The contestant with the most audience approval goes onto the next round. Rinse repeat for the second group.

The two grand finalists then are given a topic to talk about with pure improvisation for 2 minutes. Again, the audience selects the winner between the two.

The winner is the "Last Comic Standing."

My panel was the ONLY 18+ panel at Anime Expo last year. We have the freedom to say whatever the hell we want. The audience is also encouraged to heckle the contestants if they suck.

A good amount stuck around because...while they don't necessarily agree with everything the new CEO does, they are essentially using this AX as a measuring stick of his worth.

If he underperforms, they'll walk out on him. If he performs well, they'll stay. While they don't necessarily agree, they will give it a shot.

Then there's the small minority of staff that agree outright.
