We all know that cosplayers are drama whores. I often hear many convention 'horror stories' here on /cgl/, but what about good stories?

Have you ever had something amazing happen to you at a con? Perhaps you found yourself in a very lucky situation? Did a stranger brighten your day or maybe you brightened somebody else's?

tl;dr - Convention stories where something good/touching/nice/lucky happened.

My first con I was dressed up as Kyonko and I made friends with some other TMoHS cosplayers and we had various misadventures, asking random con goers silly questions in character and making movies and stuff.

    It was... so innocent.

I was at a con dressed as TDK Joker and this little kid ran up to me as I was walking to dinner with my mom. His sister came with him and they weren't even con goers. They asked for a picture and then the little boy turns to me and says, "Joker you're my hero."

It just made my day so much.

At Saboten-Con last year I was dressed up in a not-too-scary costume featuring white contacts. It was Sunday and I was kinda bummed, seeing as it was the last day of the con. Toward the middle of the day, I was hanging out at a friend's table in the artist alley and this girl, I believe she was a lolita but I could be wrong, wanders over and starts cowering. She kept saying "Don't look at me! Don't look at me! Your eyes are scary!". Being one to not pass up scaring people, I not only looked up, but I also stood up and started approaching her. She yelped and covered her eyes. At that point, her group of friends caught up with her and started filming the whole thing while encouraging me to continue. I grabbed my own camera and started filming, as well, and then went on to start acting like one of those folks who scare people in line at haunted attractions. The girl, of course, was terrified yet amused and went from trying to defend herself with someone's lightsaber to clinging to her friends. It was pretty hilarious.

Afterward, I was talking to one of her friends and I mentioned my desire to work at a haunted attraction. As luck would have it, she happened to work at one and she gave me the address and name of it and said I'd probably have no trouble because the place is always looking for people. Score!

Then about an hour after they'd all left, the scared girl's friends hunted me down to scare her again for ditching them. It was great. The whole thing totally made my day.

At Sakuracon my friends and I were in lolita and were walking out of the convention center, and there was a big group of Japanese girls who were obviously there on a trip. There was much "kawaii desu ne!" and "can I have a picucha?"-ing and I felt fucking adorable when we walked away.

Forgot my meds at a con, so by Sunday I was a jittery mess. Ended up having a panic attack and this guy found me, called for EMS and stayed with me until I was okay, even though all I was doing was shaking and staring at the floor. You'd think it'd be a guy fulfilling his knight-in-shining-armor fantasy, but I didn't acknowledge him at all, he didn't try to hold me, he didn't try to start conversation or anything, he just stayed around until everything was okay. By the time the EMTs had done their stuff and I looked up to thank him, he'd gone.

I was in the middle of a photoshoot at Sakuracon and a photographer I know approached with a photoshoot subject in tow. She was an extremely, EXTREMELY good Black Widow, and I was in an oddly complimentary mood, so the first thing out of my mouth was "You're the best Black Widow I've ever seen!" because, quite frankly, it's probably the truth.

Her reaction was something along the lines of "I love you you're the first person to know what I'm cosplaying all day".

    We both had warm fuzzies.

Nice generalization there, but okay, I'll bite.

At my very first con, I had a chance to sit in on a panel with Jan Scott-Frazier, who had lived in Japan for some time and did translations for years when she returned to the US. She also worked on my favorite anime movie as a go-between for the animators. I got to shake her hand after the panel. ^_^

The year after that, I wore a yukata my granma owned for first time, and I got five compliments in the day I had it on. It gave me that warm fuzzy feeling I'd get every time Granma smiled at me for something I'd accomplished.

The next day, I did an Andromeda Shun crossplay for the first time. The character was recognized by two people. One was a girl who wanted a picture. The other was Vic Mignogna, but I wasn't too surprised by that; he worked on the "Saint Seiya" dub. But as soon as I stepped into view at his panel, he brightened, grinned, pointed at me and said "HEY!" ^_^

I know, I know, a lotta people hate him, but that was still fun.

At Sakuracon I cosplayed Ukitake from Bleach for a while, and for an added amount of authenticity I had candy in pockets in my sleeves. Well at multiple points I spotted Hitsugaya cosplayers, and basically just about ran after them in order to tap them on the shoulder, reach into my sleeve and pull out candy and offer it to them with this massive goofy grin on my face. Those reactions were probably the best parts of that weekend, in my opinion.

Ohayocon 09 I was cosplaying Yuki Cross with my friend as Ichiru. We were wandering the halls when this little boy and girl, both in night class uniforms, come running up to up. They were so excited, they called me Yuki and everything. And then the boy moved in and gave me a hug. Right as he was hugging me his friend/sister (?) took a photo. Gave me all the warm and fuzzies.

I was at Anime Iowa last year as a Rikku cosplayer. I saw a little girl dressed up as FFX Rikku and her mother asked to get a picture of us together. I agreed, and posed. The little girl was so shy but you could tell she was happy, totally made my day.

At the same con, there was also a little girl Kiki cosplayer wandering around all by herself. A crowd formed to get pictures and it was so cute with everyone d'awwing over her.

This year at ACen there was a father and like four sons all dressed up from Avatar and I go their picture, as well. They were so cute and into posing and everything.

At the first Anime Evolution, I wore my brand new Black Magician Girl costume. There had been some dramu and I was a little bummed, but as we walked down the halls towards the car we passed a group of Japanese elementary schoolers. Their eyes lit up and they surrounded me, going on and on and being all generally super excited.

At Sakuracon, I was cosplaying as Ichigo, when this cosplayer (I have no idea who she was cosplaying as) came up to me and was like, "Here, this is for you!", gave me a letter, and ran off. I opened it, and it was a hand-written/drawn letter from Ichigo's family, with different handwriting and everything, saying "Come home soon! We miss you!" and stuff like like that.

I chased her down and glomped the shit out of her. Shit was so kawaii.

Waaaay back when at a con I had decided to go to spur-of the moment while visiting in CA, I was cosplaying SnJ Naruto(Inb4 Narutard, SnJ isn't cosplay etc) and I ran into a tiny little Sasuke who couldn't have been older than seven who was running around with a little shark-hand puppet and biting me on the arm with it.

I asked him why it kept biting me and he said something along the lines of "It only bites Uchihas" I told him I obviously wasn't an Uchiha and he got all cute and blushed and said "Not yet"

I usually hate kids but I picked this one up and hugged him. So. Fucking. Cute.

I cosplayed as Graham Spector for Sakuracon 2009, and I was a little bummed that no one knew who I was (I knew he was an obscure character, but still.) So I'm walking into the main part of the convention center, and three cute japanese girls come out of fucking nowhere, grab me and say "Ah you Guramu Specta?" I was like "Yes." They look on their face was as if they had found jesus or something. It made my day :)

The second happy con moment was when I got Chris Patton's autograph (again cosplaying as Graham) The conversation went like this:

    Chris: Hey! Graham! Awesome.
    Me: :D
Chris: Wait, your not Danish are you?
    Me: No...?
Chris: Good. Thanks for being American.

I was dressed up as a mermaid and I was outside of the con doing a photoshoot. This little girl kept following me with her mother, who had to speak for her because she was so shy. She thought I was cosplaying Ariel (I wasn't, but I wasn't going to tell a four year old that!). I gave her a seashell I happened to have with me and her eyes got all wide. She then ran to her group of friends and started dancing all excited. Soon enough, I had a swarm of little girls chanting about seeing a real live mermaid.

My favorite story was a goof I made at Otakon 2006. It was midday Saturday, maybe two hours before the masquerade, and I stopped to use the bathroom in the BCC. I did my thing, fixed my cosplay makeup, and noticed that there were two other guys in the bathroom--both talking in Japanese. I had finished my first year of university with Japanese language studies in there, and like a good little weeaboo, I wanted to talk with them. One of the men was very stylishly dressed and reminded me a little bit of Gackt. So, I asked him in Japanese, "Excuse me; are you a Gackt cosplayer?"

He replies in English, "No, I am Yoshiki."

I apologize and we go our separate ways. I go to the masquerade a few hours later, and during the intro, they introduce the Otakon guest of honor:

    ...Yoshiki.

Oops. And, that's the story of how I probably insulted one of the most famous J-Rockers of all time.

I can't even remember what she was cosplaying but I think I may have given her the idea to write letters to an Ichigo from family/Rukia/anyone they could think of. So once again, a crazy random happenstance!

Hey, if you're coming to Kumoricon (as bad as it can be) I'll totally be there as Ukitake. You weren't the Rescue Rukia arc Ichigo with the massive sword I spent a good portion of the indoor gathering talking to, were you?

Last year at AN, I was waiting in line for the masquerade, because of napping too long, I made me and all my friends late, but they were nice about it/still hopeful.
Then we see a guy we go to school with that we're all cool with, but you know, not really friends, we didn't even know said guy was at the con until now. He says something like "Oh I just went to my room real quick, but while my friend was holding my place in line... you guys are far back, wanna come up front with us?" of course we were all like "YEAH!!!"
So we got awesome seats and now that guy is one of my closet friends.

A few small stories that always make me smile when I think about them:

    1) Meeting Scott McNeil. It was awesome and we became friends ever since. Like, no joke, I have his personal e-mail and he has a nickname for me.

    2) Being dressed as a princess/queen character and having mothers and fathers alike with their little girls wanting to hug me and take photos with me.

    3) Meeting my current crush. It was totally accidental and I would have never, ever thought we'd be friends now. We met in passing (I wanted a picture with him) and somehow had a mutual friend that made us friends.

I wish I could elaborate on all of them but I'm... too shy to do so. ^_^;; Sorry.

I introduced my brother to Camino when he was younger and really into learning bass. He got his bass guitar signed by them and told me after that it was the coolest thing ever. I felt all squishy. Was also his first con.

Also, at MetroCon last year, we made some girl's day by playing with a plushie she gave a VA. I picked it up and threw it to Kirby Morrow and told him I just gave him aids. Which started a con AIDS epidemic. The girl the plush came from was OMG cuz they liked her gift. :-D

It was more out of costume than in, and it was kinda "wtf". I mean I pull out some gum and hand it to him, and he's like "this isn't the kind that loses its flavor right away is it?" and just kinda gives it this look like I had handed him something he was allergic to. Then he ate it anyway, he professed less than rudimentary knowledge of the series in conversation and we went our separate ways.

Smarties then, eh? I'll see about maybe getting a party mix of stuff. I have like six or seven pockets in each sleeve and I'm getting large lollipops for the whole family of Bleach cosplayers that come each year because they have an absolutely adorable Nel and Hitsugaya.

That's exactly why I like him! XD I only get to see him once a year but the fact that he'll make time for me at the con (even going so far as to take me back to the green room with him and his con liaison) just makes me so happy. I feel so... privileged. >_< He's truly an amazing guy. <3

Pretty much this. Granted, not all of them work for Funimation, but they need their fans. Any good public personality knows this. If they are dicks to fans, then no one wants to pay them to make appearances.

Also, does seeing a guest get so drunk they piss themselves count as a good story? I found it to be hilarious. Sage for no actual contribution.

Reminds me of my sister. Well played.

I went to Anime Matsuri this year with my friend who dressed up as Austria. There was this really pretty Hungary there that requested photos with my friend. She caught my eye when she was spinning in her dress. I spoke with her for a little bit, but didn't think anything of it. After the con, we started IMing each other and shortly started dating. It turns out she was too scared to talk to me at the convention. I guess it goes to show that if you like someone just go and talk to them. I've fallen for her so hard and I can't believe what I'd be missing if I didn't get the courage to atleast say hi.

I went as Domo-kun last year. While I was walking around the artist alley, an artist/(or buttonist?) came from his table to see me and told me to stay put while he gets me something. He came back with a button he personally made for me that had "NOM NOM" written in black marker all over it. It made me so happy that something like that was made on the spot, and so I proudly donned the button~

The downside was... I forgot his name and I wasn't sure where his table was ._. a lot of people were asking me where I got the button too... *sigh*

The "Dangerous Ladies" are a consistent favourite on the Toronto cosplay scene not only for their amazing costumes but their upbeat and friendly attitude (ranging from doing photo shoots to hanging about with fellow cosplayers). One scene that I particularly remember was when Jenn and Emily (Supergirl and Batgirl) spent the better part of an hour at the DC booth @ FanExpo entertaining some of the younger cosplayers (5-9) by posing for pictures with them because the children thought they really were Kara Zor-El and Cassandra Cain.

During a convention last year, my friend and I were walking around as Rosa Farrell and Rydia from Final Fantasy IV. We had worked very hard on our costumes, but NOBODY knew who we were.
People were calling me 'Warrior Princess Zelda' and Rydia 'Go-Green Poison Ivy' and other stupid shit.
After wearing it for half the day, we kind of wanted to change costumes. Just as we were about to get into the elevators, we heard somebody yell, "ROSA! RYDIA! WAIT!"
This cute little Asian girl comes running up to us, holding little baggies. She hands one to each of us, smiles and says, "I'm so glad to see cosplays of my favorite Final Fantasy!" Then she runs off.

We looked inside the baggies to find fanart stickers from her artist alley table. One of Rosa and the other of Rydia.

If I remember correctly from the post-Sakuracon threads, she was cosplaying a character from Tegami Bachi, which is a series about letter-carriers.

My own little bit of storytime:
I was cosplaying Kakyoin from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure this past Sakuracon. At first, not too many people recognized me, but later on I ended up running into a lot of cool Jojo's fans, including a group of Japanese guys selling stuff in the dealer's room. I ended up doing the ORAORA/MUDAMUDA thing with them; my sister said it was both one of the coolest and one of the stupidest things she's ever seen.

Was dressed as Nausicaa for ACen, and was kinda :(((( that no one really recognized me or my boyfriend (who was going as Asbel).

We decided to go back to the hotel to change, when all of the sudden I hear, "NAUSICAA!!" and this young girl comes up to me and goes, "Nausicaa, you were my childhood hero! You're so pretty!!" and hugs me and took pictures with us.

I was all :DDDD for the rest of the day, and it made my bf pretty happy too.

The best story I have to offer was at Last year's Fan Expo me and my friends had sat down out in the hallway, taking a break from all the bags of merchandise we were carrying, and a sad looking Asian guy walks by all by himself with a "free hugs" sign
Without saying anything i stood up and held my arms out to him and gave him a nice hug. He walked away looking happier and i felt good inside :]

    a small story....
I was cosplaying as mad hatter from Aangel Santuary ( it wasn't the best but it was my first costume) I was a bit annoyed since the people at the dvd stand thought I was cosplaying a the tranny from paradise kiss( in a way i was cosplay a tranny like charcter but it was a bit depressing to hear someone say that). So was on my way to get lunch and I heard a loud scream, turned and saw a girl shouting "MAD HATTER" really loudly at me. She was a major fan of the character and was telling me how much of a fan she was of me ( mad hatter). really made my day but funny thing was next to her was a guy cosplaying the character the dvd guys though I was and he was awesome.

I lost all my friends, and I was alone, and in line for a dance (they said that they'd be there too). It's 8PM, dark, and fucking freezing all of a sudden. I was in a short skirt and tank top, shivering. All of a sudden there is a warm jacket around my shoulders. These two guys were casually chatting me up, wondering why I was alone and said that they didn't want me shivering like that etcetc.
They weren't hitting on me - one was blantantly gay - and we hung out. We all ended up going to eat/snack, and they stayed with me until I found my friends (which wasn't until around 11:30PM)
I was young... 14? They were both so sweet, and even now the story makes me smile. Not every guy at an anime convention is a fucking creep, and some are beyond kind.

Lessee, one con, I was wearing boots with a cosplay ( ones that needed them, fff ) and I was feeling extremely lightheaded from the heat and the costume, and I had a bunch of stuff I was trying to carry back to my room so I could rest.

Well... needless to say I fell, and almost passed out. Not even 2 seconds, and someone was by my side, and his friends were gathering the stuff I dropped. They escorted me back to my room ( not far, it was about a 5 minute walk ) carried my stuff, stopped when I needed to stop... It was so awesome of them. I thanked them for everything. I hadn't seen them the rest of the con though, even though I continued to wear that cosplay the rest of the day. ( I took a nap and some pills, and I was feeling much better. Don't know what the fuck was wrong with me, but it's happened before. )
