If you dont have fun at a con its your own damn fault. You dont even need advice after you get over the first hour or so of jitters it will be a good time all around

Oh yea and you'll find your own facet of the con to have an enjoyable time all of it isnt for everyone but from 10am to 4a you will most certainly have something fun to do. and dont forget food money if theres any tip I could give you 3 days of no food sucks ass.

Don't waste your time bitching about stupid otakus.
No, seriously. You're all coming from the same internet, complaining and whining about them will only put a damper on your day.

Also, cosplay. Ignore what /cgl/ says; a not-so-good cosplay is better than no cosplay at all. People will flock to you out of identification whether your cosplay is fantastic or not, just because they want to hang out with a fellow fan.

    >>2890794
And that, x100. Any shitty con can be made awesome if you bring awesome people with you.

Have friends, do whatever is fun, but don't annoy the hell out of others (aka no glomping etc)
Take pics, get photographed, talk to people.

I do admit I am a bit shy.
and sometimes I do end up alone at cons. which is hard to imagine at a convention with a bunch of people.

    It just happens!
    >> Anonymous 04/30/10(Fri)19:35 No.2891276
Roleplay, always. If you aren't in character and showing everybody how much you ARE the person you're cosplaying, you're doing it wrong.

On the flipside, don't be an obnoxious little shit about it. Stay in character, but also stay within the bounds of reasonable public behavior.

Very true. All the anger I see going on in /cgl/ you hardly ever see at cons. Cosplay is meant to fun!

As for fun I just recently started really getting into panels. The late night ones are the best but you need to get in line early at big cons because they will turn you away if the room gets too full regardless of how long you've waited.

This thread is relevant to my interests.
I've never been to a con before, but I've been cosplaying with friends for about 4 years.
I'm going to a con this summer (it's a big deal for me, MT is a long ways away from shit).

Don't be afraid to explore the surrounding area/city. Especially if you get bored during mid day, there's usually something else around that might be fun for an hour or so before the next good panel/event.

Example: AX back @ the LBCC. There was a fucking aquarium, harbor boat ride, and Ferris wheel in WALKING DISTANCE [even for fat fucks]. Shit was so awesome, I got to pet sharks.

Is that advisable to do in cosplay, though?
At metrocon, I hear if you go outside in, say, any cosplay with a weapon, the fucking swat team gets called on you and they beat you into submission with billy clubs.
    Tampa is serious business.
    >> Anonymous 04/30/10(Fri)23:38 No.2891850
    >>2891837
you OBVIOUSLY shouldn't be walking around in public with a weapon, prop or not. Especially if it's a gun. Common sense, man.

other than that, lots of metro people make trips to local shops n stuff still in costume and it's all good.

My suggestion is just to know your con ediquette. First of all, ask for pictures, don't demand them. If a cosplayer turns you down for photos, don't throw a hissy fit (you never know, they actually might be trying to get somewhere or maybe they have to use the bathroom).

Just because you're enthusiastic about seeing a certain character being portrayed well, that doesn't mean you can grab their ass, grope them, hug them ect. without their permission. Remember to respect personal space.

And for fuck's sakes yaoi paddles have to be the most annoying things on earth.

Other than that, make sure you go to lost of panels and talk to people! It's super easy to make friends at cons :3 eat a lot of food, take a lot of pictures, run around like an idiot but keep everything within reason v_v
    >> Anonymous 05/01/10(Sat)23:50 No.2895910
    Have standards.
    >> Anonymous 05/01/10(Sat)23:58 No.2895942
DO go with friends. So even if the con turns out to be shit, you can turn it into FUN shit, because you are with good people.

DO bring your own food. Con food is expensive. Besides, it's fun to bring your own little box of stuff and have a picnic in character with other folks (make sure to offer to share).

DO try and not be judgmental. Someone here already said that we're all from the same internet and we're all together at the convention because we have the same interests. Make an effort to be kind. This means no mocking the weeaboos until AFTER you leave.

    DO get good sleep.

DO NOT get wasted and embarrass yourself.

TAKE a shower. If you sweat a lot TAKE MANY.

    WEAR DEODORANT.

    Bring water.
Tons of soda and energy drinks seems like a good idea until you're dehydrated as fuck and feel like shit.
    If you're outside, suntan lotion.

    I love this thread.
Usually if you listen to /cgl/, you get the impression that all cons and meetups are fail, cosplaying isn't worth the effort, and the whole community is made up of fat jealous cunts.
This thread is pointing out that the reality is actually completely different from our bitching. I love it <3

Always bring a camera with you. I did this since attending my first convention in 2007 and I never regretted the decision. Interestingly, bringing a camera with me at the time was actually second nature to me, but I had no regrets doing so.

    >> Anonymous 05/02/10(Sun)12:25 No.2897548
How do you make friends without coming off as incredibly creepy?

All my friends either wont cosplay with me, or agree to then drop out last moment so i'm left with a finished cosplay just left in my room.
    >> Anonymous 05/02/10(Sun)12:30 No.2897559
Remember to eat. It's SUPER easy to forget to eat at cons when you're having fun.

Watch out for cosplayers with large props/wings/etc. Try not to bump into them, you could break whatever it is they're carrying/wearing.

If you're stopped for a picture, move out of everyone's way and don't clog up the traffic.

If you're going out in cosplay, don't act like a fool. Same goes for in the hotel/con center. Whether you like it or not, you represent the con. If you act like an idiot, you could cost the con it's venue.

If you're posing with a large prop or those big extendable wings, make sure you don't hurt anybody while moving that stuff around. Make sure no one is in the way or have a friend to keep the space clear.

Bring supplies just in case of a wardrobe malfunction.

If you're bringing a lot of stuff or you're one of those people who forgets stuff, bring a packing list.

Costume test runs are your friend. Break in a new pair of shoes so you're not in pain at the con. Make sure everything fits, etc. I've had issues with prosthetics not working because I didn't test them(my adhesive had expired).

Pain meds. If you're headache prone, wigs are bound to give you one. Bring meds just in case so you're not wasting a day laying down. (personally, I find that liquid tylenol is godly. It works FAST.)

Small cramped dealers rooms =/= social gathering area.

Bring a flask of liquor or some joints. Go to wear there are con nerds smoking their cigarettes. Sit down nearby, swig from flask, check phone, swig again, look over and nod at the first person who makes eye contact. Offer liquor or weed, enjoy chilling out with nerdy people who are there to have a good time.

No. Not everyone wants to share a stranger`s alcohol at a con, though some might. This would probably just creep people out further unless they are already drinking.

but we can't be friends. when you see me, you wont want to be my friend maybe. i look like i dont want to be there when you see me. it's not that i dont like being around people. yesterday at the bookstore i was a little uncomfortable after about 2 hours of broswing. i felt a little more comfortable when i found a book and held it. then i went downstairs. but then i hid the book in one of the shelves to look at poetry. i went back to go get it and it wasn't there! i didn't want to ask the worker there if she put it away because i was really uncomfortable at that point. i had been there for three hours looking at books and i was tired. i'm extra awkward when i'm tired. i ended up not finding the book anywhere. i peeked at the shelf with wheels that the people working there use to organize books, but it wasn't there. i got another book, though. i guess the lesson from yesterday was to do things like trying to talk to people when i'm not so tired. ok. i'm typing too much now. its a bad habit of mine. sorry.
