When I was a kid my parents were convince I had it. Luckily for me, my doctor and the psychologist they took me to were both committed to their work and told my parents to knock it off. I was just a quiet kid who liked being alone, could draw well and read 5 grade levels ahead of my age.

I talked a lot to people I knew and in isolated situations. I just shut up in groups. So my preschool kindergarten teacher was like "OH FUCK." and panicked my parents.

i've been diagnosed with autism but i'm not. i am socially awkward as crap because of bullying that still lingers though and my dad is pretty sure he has aspergers.
but it was a shitty test anyway, in a language that i hadn't been speaking for like 6 months. and i wanted to get out so badly so i just filled in really short answers. apparently this was bad.
whatever, i'm redoing the test in another country anyway. if they decide i have austism too i'll believe it.

I actually have been diagnosed with OCD when I was younger. Everything had to be even with me, to the point of a nervous breakdown if it wasn't. I had to own an even amount of shirts, I seperated my M&M's by color and then ate 2 at a time, one on each side of my mouth. If there was an odd number, I split that one in half.
It was crazy. I dunno why the hell it stopped. I guess I grew out of it, if that's even fucking possible.

It's called being 14) when I was in 9th grade and they had me take Aderall (sp?). I flat out refused to take it. Unless it's really severe, meds for mental/psychological problems seem pointless to me, and may do more harm than good. After seeing my brother medicated to hell (he needed medicines for the side effects of the medicine he was taking, now that is fucking bullshit), it's a terrible cycle and I would rather do anything I could to avoid it.

For years when I was a little kid I was so paranoid about germs that I would start crying all the time thinking that things weren't "clean" and I washed my hands so much they would be cracked and bleeding pretty much all the time. Firstly, you don't have clinical OCD unless it takes at least a specific (and somewhat debilitating) number of hours in your daily routine to satisfy your compulsions. Everyone has SOME little behavioural quirks that are obsessive-compulsive (I can only eat fries in even numbers, excepting a single one), but that does not equate to a disorder.

Secondly, a lot of Asperger's and ADHD diagnoses are a result of laziness on the part of doctors. Some want to please parents desperate to pass blame, while others simply want to get troublesome kids out of their surgery by medicating them, but the criterea for calling something Asperger's are so vague and common that if you actively seek to be diagnosed, you will be.

None of the above are excuses to act like utter morons.

oh, i know it's not pleasant.
usually they make you do some kind of test. if you filled in short answers, you are autistic. if you pay too much attention to the details while drawing and not drawing the overall thing first, you are autistic. if you don't like people, you are autistic. if you don't like going new places, you are autistic. if get very excited about the things you like and not that keen about talking about the things you're not that interested, you are autistic. if you don't make eye contact, you are autistic.

One thing I have heard before in threads like this and one thing I hate is how people are like "DOCTORS ONLY SAY YOU HAVE ASPERGERS SO THEY CAN MEDICATE YOU!"

Uh, no. Aspergers has NO SET MEDICINE REGIMEN. There is no cure or treatment of Aspergers or autism that you can take in a pill form. Sure, you can give them Adderall or whatever, but that's like putting a cat in a car seat -- that's not what it's for.

The only thing I can think of that might be considered a regimen is the "glutein-free diets" that some parents use on their children. This diet has had NO PROVEN EFFECTS (some anecdotal effects, though) on autism whatsoever. No idea why people still use it.

Standard treatment of autism and Aspergers is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, I believe. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is the most effective treament for lots of disorders, and this is no exception.

    Alright, rant over.

Saying that the gluten free diets show no proof of working is bullshit when there are studies being done on them that say that they do in fact show some sort of improvement in some cases of severe autism. Just because we don't understand how it works doesn't mean that it doesn't work. Dietary therapy can be used to treat many different things believe it or not. I used to be a skeptic as well until my mind was recently changed by seeing real results, however not related to autism but epilepsy.

I have asperger but I think the circumstances of need forced me to "get over it" in a sense, since no one knew or cared about it when I was a kid. I didn't speak until I was three years old, at which point I also taught myself how to do simple math. My teachers had me put into special programs for "depressed" children (I was the only one in the whole program) when I was in elementary school. Fun times.

I still have some mild social retardation, AKA foot in mouth syndrome but for the most part I learned to deal with it.

I can get where the score's coming from. I don't feel awkward in social situations, I'm not clumsy, not easily confused. But I'm very easily distracted and have fairly unusual ways of expressing myself, so I answered pretty high on all of those questions.

This. There's schizophrenic psychosis, bipolar disorder and panic disorder on three different family members of mine. I was devastated and scared to death to notice there was something wrong with my mental health too.

I was diagnosed "only" as depressed and anxious though. Nothing good, long-term psychotherapy and mild happy pills wouldn't fix. But it does not bring me any feeling of pride whatsoever. My mother is the only one I have told about it.

I really, really can't stand the romanticizing and dignifying of mental disabilities.

The first is your thinking you're special. Now I know Mr. Rogers said you're awesome and shit, but being afraid of motorbikes and not liking people walking behind you isn't what he meant. The latter being, well. There's traits among autistic people, it's kinda only obvious when you put them all in a room.

Wouldn't? No, I'm implying they would. People do things, put them in a place where they can interact with one another and people start realizing they do the same thing as others with doing the same activity. It's the same as throwing all the autistic kids in one room, 4chan being our room.

And anyone looking at this test and taking it at face value is a retard unto themselves, get help from someone with a good history and degree in knowing what the fuck they're talking about and quit filling out questionnaires hoping you can self-diagnose yourself with "OH THAT MAKES SENSE NOW" bullshit.

I've never been diagnosed with anything, but my brother has been diagnosed with assburgers. My mom uses it as a crutch for him, of course, while he and I have some bad personality traits in common, (of course I was responsible for my own behavior growing up, didn't have a crutch to lean on.) I think the symptoms we both show are part of being raised by a mother with mental disorders, rather than the disease its self.

Although I'm pretty sure he is a true aspie, he can still learn to be a functioning member of society like I have. I Hope every day I'm as normal as apple pie, but growing up with an emotionally and financially unstable household, that will never truly be the case.

Maybe studies should be done of how suspected Aspies are being raised, If they come from stable, nurturing households, I think it's more possible that they are true Aspies rather than just kids with social and emotional problems.
