  Fan costuming was pioneered by
Forrest Ackerman and Myrtle Douglas, when they wore their
"futuricostumes" to the first World Science Fiction Convention
(Worldcon) in 1939.
The term Cosplay was coined by Nov Takahashi
after visiting Worldcon in 1984, and he used the term in his reports
instead of "masquerade," which would be more difficult to translate to
japanese.
