So there's plenty of con horror stories.

    What about con happy stories?

This year, on the way to Katsucon, we discovered a beef jerky warehouse. The pieces were huge! A pound lasted us through 4 states! That is a damn fine way to start off a con season imo.

After spending about a day and a half on my costume, and not thinking I would be very well recognized, I got just as many picture requests and lovely comments on my costume as my friend who was dressed up as a character from a hugely popular anime

    Walking into my first con.

I had no idea what to expect, and my friends all met with unfortunate accidents. I was all alone, sporting a crappy Axel cosplay. I knew I looked bad. I was scared of being teased, honestly. I mean, I was like, fifteen.

But the moment I walked in, everyone was friendly, lots of people asked for my picture. It was just, such an awesome experience.

After a truly horrific con experience at last year's ACEN, I was wandering around a convention with nothing to do (I'm not the kind of person who can stay entertained by panels and such for an entire day; especially when I'm in an interesting city), by myself.

After an hour of sitting in the same chair in the lobby feeling sorry for myself, I wandered into the dealer's room and saw a "help wanted" sign at a book/dvd vendor. I asked if I could help, and the owner said "only one hour 'til we close, but stand over there and make sure people don't steal things."

I stood around deterring shoplifters for an hour, and then helped clean, organize and put everything away. After it was all done, one of the staff members said, "Ok, take a book."
"Really?" (I had expected a $5-off cupon at most)
"Yeah. In fact, take two since you didn't bail for the cleaning part."

    Sweet.

Since I had told some of the workers my situation (having nothing to do and no-one to see) they said, "Hey, we're all eating free Chinese food and the boss is paying for it, you should come with us!"

    Sweet.

After lots of friendly chitchat at the delicious Chinese buffet, they said, "Hey, this guy's birthday is today and we're drinking and having a mini-hotel party after we get back, you should come!"

    Sweet.

So I got drunk and bitched about the people I had come with with my new acquaintances and the day turned out to be pretty nice after all.

I never got anyone's contact information though. D: I'd like to work there again as a "real" employee if I can.

    Anime Boston 2008:
Wore my Neozeka from Alice 19th on Friday, and while I got tons of compliments and 'OMG, I love that manga!' I didn't see a single Alice 19th cosplayer. Friday night I was wearing a different costume, and saw the most adorable Alice cosplayer, and talked to her for a few minutes. She said she'd be wearing the costume on Saturday as well. I wound up getting pulled away before I could set up a meeting place or anything, so on Saturday I wandered around in my Neozeka for almost 2 hours looking for her (Which isn't all that easy, my Neozeka feet are basicly big fleece pillows with shoes sewn into the middle. I have to kind of waddle when I wear them, which make for both slow going and sore thighs after a while). I finally gave up, since I was meeting a friend for a panel soon, and wanted to change before I went. As I was waddling towards my hotel, a woman came running up to me. "Will you take some pictures with my daughter, please?" I look over her shoulder, and there's my Alice, fighting through the crowd to us. I was so happy, we got a bunch of pictures, and my day was totally made by the only other Alice 19th cospayer in the con. :)

Unsurprisingly, they ignored the logic I was trying to argue about how he probably does it to avoid creepers or being exploited by strangers, but because of that one incident they're all bawwing.

Then, this big guy with a "free hugs" sign came up to me and asked me if he could give me a hug. Now, I'm not to into those stupid "free hug" signs, but I agreed out of boredom.

The instant I stood up, he picked me up bridal-style and started walking while carrying me. I don't remember what he said, but I think it was like... "Where would my princess like to sit and rest? The ground is no place for you to be."

Needless to say, I died of embarrassment. Once he sat me down on a chair, he bowed and asked if he could meet me later. I nodded and he left. I never did meet with him, but damn did it make my day!
