03/03/10(Wed)21:15 No.2653305After
a truly horrific con experience at last year's ACEN, I was wandering
around a convention with nothing to do (I'm not the kind of person who
can stay entertained by panels and such for an entire day; especially
when I'm in an interesting city), by myself.
After an hour of
sitting in the same chair in the lobby feeling sorry for myself, I
wandered into the dealer's room and saw a "help wanted" sign at a
book/dvd vendor. I asked if I could help, and the owner said "only one
hour 'til we close, but stand over there and make sure people don't
steal things."
I stood around deterring shoplifters for an hour,
and then helped clean, organize and put everything away. After it was
all done, one of the staff members said, "Ok, take a book." "Really?"
(I had expected a $5-off cupon at most) "Yeah. In fact, take two
since you didn't bail for the cleaning part."
Sweet.
Since
I had told some of the workers my situation (having nothing to do and
no-one to see) they said, "Hey, we're all eating free Chinese food and
the boss is paying for it, you should come with us!"
Sweet.
After
lots of friendly chitchat at the delicious Chinese buffet, they said,
"Hey, this guy's birthday is today and we're drinking and having a
mini-hotel party after we get back, you should come!"
Sweet.
So
I got drunk and bitched about the people I had come with with my new
acquaintances and the day turned out to be pretty nice after all.
I
never got anyone's contact information though. D: I'd like to work
there again as a "real" employee if I can. |
