So, anon, what do you like more? Big-Ass Cons, Tiny-Ass Cons, or somewhere in the middle?
    >> bonk 03/02/10(Tue)23:18 No.2650111
    Middle of the road.

Colossalcon/Youmacon are my ideal sized conventions.
    >> Anonymous 03/02/10(Tue)23:20 No.2650127
they all have pluses and minuses. i prefer medium (Animazement) and large (Otakon)
    >> Anonymous 03/02/10(Tue)23:20 No.2650129
I remember when I went to one cycle of AnimeUSA, Katsucon, and Otakon. small, medium, large, so to speak. But as my life go busier I only had time for the one big summer con. I miss the atmosphere for the smaller con but I'm not sure if it'll still have the 'wow' factor of otakon
    >> Anonymous 03/02/10(Tue)23:22 No.2650148
Middle is what I usually prefer. Go with friends, meet up with friends, make new friends.

When I do go to a big convention, however, I like to go alone, and go as wild as is possible.
    >> Anonymous 03/02/10(Tue)23:24 No.2650161
depends on what you consider big or small.

I would consider anything under 2k attendance a small con and anything over 10k a big con.

I prefer the middle, somewhere around 5-7k
They usually have enough programing without feeling over crowded in my experience.

10k is Ohayocon, and I still consider that small. Big to me is at least 25k.
    >> Anonymous 03/02/10(Tue)23:40 No.2650239
The bigger the con, the more likely you are to feel like a small fish in an ocean of big fish. The lines are longer and unless you go with a big group, you are more likely to feel alone.

The smaller the con is, the more intimate it is and the more people are likely to talk to you and be friends with you.

This has proven to be true, especially with surveys I sent out
    >> Anonymous 03/02/10(Tue)23:44 No.2650259
The only reasons why a lot of people go to the big ones and not the small ones is because of the exclusive guests who only go to the big cons and the 'popular' cosplayers who feel that small cons aren't worth their time, even if they live in the middle of nowhere and their local con is a small con. They rather shell out 5x-6x the money to travel across the country just so they can be seen and brag about it, and to hang with a bigger crowd.
    >> Anonymous 03/02/10(Tue)23:47 No.2650274
    >>2650214
if we are talking about anime cons specifically then there are only 2 cons in the country that can be called "big" by those standards.
    >> Anonymous 03/02/10(Tue)23:50 No.2650286
I went to a big con a few times, AX, and felt very lonely. I hated standing in the long lines and hate that most things were cancelled and took too long to get ready. People seemed to be in their own world and not tend to talk much to people they don't personally know. The people seemed to be more snobbish too.

The small cons, you can actually breath and people actually talked to me, and I made lots of friends. I didn't miss anything and the lines weren't that bad too.
    >> Anonymous 03/02/10(Tue)23:51 No.2650287
    >>2650214
Your logic seems fucked. Ohayocon is one of the biggest in the U.S; definitely top 10%. Otakon is barely above 25k for attendance.
    >> Anonymous 03/02/10(Tue)23:56 No.2650318
I prefer the small-middle size cons. The big ones are for the showoffs. Real anime fans/cosplayers don't just go to the big ones. If you are a cosplayer who only goes to the big ones instead of your local smaller con, how can you call yourself a true cosplayer and anime fan?
    >> Anonymous 03/03/10(Wed)00:01 No.2650350
I hate tiny ass small ones. Theres barely anything to do and all I do is drink. Which is fine but I could spend considerably less to just chill with my friends and drink rather than paying for reg + hotel + travel to then just sit around and drink.
    >> Soy Sauce !!u38RBxNXutS 03/03/10(Wed)00:03 No.2650364
I'm an all range con goer. But Mid-sizes like Youmacon and ALA since I see people often during the con, but still a lot of areas to walk over.
    >> Anonymous 03/03/10(Wed)00:07 No.2650386
    >>2650350

What do you consider tiny-ass? A lot of the big cons are also the same, with barely nothing to do.
    >> Anonymous 03/03/10(Wed)00:16 No.2650434
midsize to supersize(d*con). Most of those super tiny cons aren't worth it. I went to one that was a hallway with 2 big rooms. I was bored and ready to leave after 30 minutes.
    >> plushabilities !!qI9eritJXlf 03/03/10(Wed)08:37 No.2651454
Mid-to-huge. I've tried the little cons (animeNEXT) and it just got boring really fast. I like the sensory overload that comes along with the big cons.
    >> Anonymous 03/03/10(Wed)08:43 No.2651460
All cons in my country are really small compared to the rest of the world. They get boring really fast, because there are not enough things to do.
    >> Anonymous 03/03/10(Wed)08:59 No.2651483
midsize cons are pretty great, IMO. This'll be my 10th year of Otakon, and it's been losing interest for me for some time now - I really only go to hang out with friends.

Last time I went to ACen, though, it was a fucking blast.
    >> Anonymous 03/03/10(Wed)09:35 No.2651509
In the middle, because in the middle you can still make friends and still see some great cosplay, with still some stuff to do. Big ones are nice too look at cosplays and or show off, but you can't really make a lot of friends as easy and it's a pain to walk around. Really small get boring fast because you just feel like you're walking in circles for hours.
    >> Druqs !7WVrmDruqs 03/03/10(Wed)09:48 No.2651518
i like middle size cons. Enough people to feel busy, but not so many that it feels like too crowded.

Bigger the better. I'm a people person, and I love being in huge crowds of people around the country with common interests. Fanime was my first one last year, pretty damn fun.

Big cons for me. I was raised on Dragon*Con, and AWA became my idea of a small con. I remember my first REAL small con. I was ready to go after 2 hours.

Exactly. Big to me is pretty much AX, Otakon, and SDCC. The rest of them are medium-large.
    >> Anonymous 03/03/10(Wed)15:05 No.2652094
Only con I've gone to is Ohayocon.

From what I hear, it'd midsized.

Thinking about going to Otakon, and at 2.5x the amount of attendees, hm. I am a little intimidated.
    >> Anonymous 03/03/10(Wed)15:07 No.2652098
The best Con in Texas is Anime FEST and they only get around 4,000-5,000 people. Compare that to A-kon, the largest at around 15,000, and yeah. I like smaller but not tiny.
    >> Jkid !yYT/u4PSNE 03/03/10(Wed)15:42 No.2652163
    I have no preference really.

If I can enjoy myself at any anime convention in the DC area, that's fine with me. I don't care if it's small, medium or large, it's cool with me.
    >> Muuko !!VMyXh6xpjYI 03/03/10(Wed)15:49 No.2652192
I don't care much for the size too much, it's the people that make the convention for me.
    >> Anonymous 03/03/10(Wed)15:51 No.2652202
Depends. I love Dragon*Con, and it's fucking huge, but got to go to Otakon for the first time last year and didn't really like it. I had fun with my friends, but the con itself just wasn't that interesting to me.

Genre and demographics matter more to me than the actual size. I prefer multigenre cons because I'm not as big of an anime fan as I used to be, and at 25, I just feel too old for most anime cons.
    >> Anonymous 03/03/10(Wed)16:00 No.2652244
They all have their advantages. My favorite has always been Otakon despite the crowding these days (claustrophobic, ugh), but I've almost always had a good time at my mid-sized home con, and I had a ton of fun at the tiny-ass con I went to a couple months ago.
    >> bombyNeko 03/03/10(Wed)16:04 No.2652260
    medium
    under 3,000 ppl
    more than 1,000
that way there will still be new people to meet
but also a familiarity between people too

    >got to go to Otakon for the first time last year and didn't really like it. I had fun with my friends, but the con itself just wasn't that interesting to me.

Otakon has been shit since 07. They royally fucked up paneling and refused to learn from their mistakes, which carried over into 08, and 09 was just plain lackluster in all respects. It used to be so much better, but Otakon seems like it's suffering from the staff having their heads up their own asses and refusing to see what's wrong with the situation.

If you're looking for a "big con", look elsewhere.
    >> Angry Asian !!PY89pu19Av9 03/03/10(Wed)19:02 No.2652762
Depend's on the mood I am in for Con's. Otakon I like because its so massive and chaotic. Can't help but have fun. But at the same time, smaller con's you can actually enjoy doing more panels or whatnot (unlike Katsu where most panels were non-existant)
    >> Anonymous 03/03/10(Wed)20:01 No.2652978
bigass cons. the bigger they are, the more hot girls in awesome cosplay there will be.
    >> shibby !dl6DGuRJOM 03/03/10(Wed)20:07 No.2652996
I prefer my midsized cons, Animazement and Katsucon are my favorites. When I go to Otakon, I do manage to see people I know, simply because over the years I've amassed so many, but at times I feel lost in the sea of people. It's intimidating to me, and I'm always afraid someone's going to run into my prop and break it :<

If something Otakon-sized had been my first con, I probably would have been shit-scared the entire time. My first con had about 2k people and my mind was BLOWN.
    >> baracudaboy 03/03/10(Wed)20:35 No.2653101
I like the medium sized conventions. Like, around 3000 is good enough to not get boring but not enough to make me wait inline 4 hours for art commissions.
    >> Anonymous 03/03/10(Wed)20:44 No.2653146
I'm mid atlantic and I like medium cons like AMA or AUSA. Maybe Nekocon. I don't go to no-name or first year cons. Otakon is a piece of shit.
    >> Anonymous 03/03/10(Wed)20:56 No.2653210
Are you guys calling something less than 3,000 people a day 'medium sized', or 3,000 over the whole weekend?

In NZ we have one con in three different places during the year, the biggest one got about 40,000 attendees over three days, and I'd call that medium sized. The smaller places get about 10-15,000 over their weekends.

I wouldn't even call the biggest one that huge, you can see absolutely everything (barring panels of course) in one day. I always thought the American cons were like OMFGGIGANTIC.
    >> Anonymous 03/03/10(Wed)20:57 No.2653216
    >>2653210

Oh, forgot to mention, I go to the smaller ones (well, one this year, spent too much money on cosplay and can't afford to go to both) for the people mainly, and the bigger one for the events and panels.

My first Otakon was 2008 and I was still getting lost on Sunday, and finally figured out how to get around without getting lost....on Saturday at Otakon 2009. :| This year might be my last Otakon if they keep jacking prices up. It already costs a pretty penny.
