ITT: stories of how you got into cosplay/learning sew/started going to cons etc.

I live in the middle of nowhere, so I haven't started yet. Hopefully going to University'll help. Is it worth taking sewing classes, or should I just fumble it through until what I'm making stops looking like such shit?

    pic unrelated but amusing.

I come from /a/ and have been browsing here religiously the past couple of months. I'm buying a sewing machine today, actually. Gonna try to teach myself how to use it with the help of some tutorials.

Saw lots of hot girls dressing up in ALMOST skanky costumes. Decided to join the fun.

When I was an emo kid at high school, about 6-7 years ago, one of the 3 people that talked to me was an anime fan and wanted to cosplay. We went to a seamstress together, but I ended up not doing it. After I got into college I decided to do it, but immediatly got involved with local drama and had to take an hiatus. Going back now.

Interesting story, I guess I'll share it, leaving out a few details.

It all started when I met cosplayers at the Street Fighter 4 launch party, and met more cosplayers at the Rumble on the Walk event a week later. This is what first got me interested because I didn't realize cosplay could be done outside of cons, but it made sense because it was Street Fighter cosplay. Another Street Fighter related event was happening, it was an art gallery opening, and it happened to be the day after my co-worker was having a Halfway-To-Halloween party. I go to his party as a crappy Freeman, crash at his place for the night because it was closer, and then head over to the art gallery the next day. The Street Fighter cosplayers from the launch party and rumble on the walk were there, and at one point, I mentioned I had my Freeman outfit in the car. They egg me on to go put it on, so I run to the car and get into it, come back and had some fun. They asked me if I was going to the SoCal Cosplay Picnic, and that's pretty much how I started getting into cosplay.

I learned how to sew from my mom, who sews custom curtains for rich people to make a little extra spending money. I also took sewing classes in high school for two years. I wanted to actually make cosplays since I was 14, but my parents wouldn't allow it "because they said so." I guess they didn't want their daughter to become a nerd.

I didn't actually make my first cosplay till I went to college and started dating another cosplayer. I made my first costume, Haruhi Suzumiya's bunny girl costume, in about 3 days. I was so proud of it because it was the first thing I made without a pattern. xD

I went to college, which was far away from my hometown, and one of my dormmates was talking about attending an anime convention, and I realized for the first time in my life I could attend an anime convention = first cosplay ever. I learned the basics of sewing machines from said dormmate and never looked back since then.

I was raised by my dad on anime and videogames (might explain my social skills), so I've been into it since I was really little. Years ago, on Halloween, I decided I was tired of dressing up in the same store-bought costumes year after year, so I cosplayed as a video game character I really liked at the time. It was really crappy, but I'd made it myself and was proud of it. My dad was thrilled. My grandparents....not quite as much.

I got on Deviantart after AX of like '06 and saw a picture of LordMasamune as Sephiroth. I thought it was the greatest thing since sliced cheese, and decided that I would go to a convention. Unfortunately for me I didn't look up conventions in the area until the day after Sakuracon of '07 ended, and I was most bummed.

So then I discovered Kumoricon. Went in '07, been to every one since, gonna keep going despite being at the Failton, and been to every Sakuracon since '08. I have never NOT cosplayed.

Went to my first con in 8th grade, with a friend who introduced me to the whole convention thing (and my reaction was something akin to "holy shit they have those??") I did some shittastic cosplay at those cons, took a 2 year break from sewing until late into my freshman year of college. I've only started to consider myself half-okay at it in the past year or so. I still have a whole hell of a lot to learn.

So more or less, been attending cons for 8 years now, I've lost some of my old badges but I think I'm at 20+ cons now. I only went to 1 or 2 a year until 2009 where I hit 7. This year I have 6 planned.

I heard of conventions from a friend of mine, and went to the last BAAF, in 2003. I was pretty internet retarded, so after there was no more BAAF, I kinda thought, of well, there won't be another convention around here. Then my brother got into cosplay, and before i realized it, we were ass deep in conventions.

I always wanted to go to cons, and I didn't think they existed in NYC until three years ago when I learned about NYAF. From there, I wanted to cosplay so bad. It was an awful waste of money getting shit off eBay ( and it was always fucked up in some way ).

After starting to attend meet ups, I started getting into cosplaying more. I made some pretty kickass friends too. I can barely sew, but one of my friends started encouraging me to make my own costumes because she didn't want me to end up like a piece of fucking fail like some people we know.
