I always wondered something. During anime conventions you get one or two normal people (the term I think is normie) that happen to be passing by or has book a room during the convention due to various reasons (like airline pilots/stewardesses on overnight duty).

What's the best thing you ever heard muttered by them? Worst? Funniest?

The best I ever head was at Acen a few years back. One pilot from I think American Airlines took one step in and said "HOLY SHIT THIS IS AWESOME!"

Pic unrelated but posted because it's awesome.

Convention held the same weekend as someone's prom. Felt perfect, man. Some of the ladies at the prom came out to get pictures taken. Some of the men eye fucked some of the female cosplayers.

Sounds like Acen. Acen seems to always be booked with a prom like its mandatory. I think back in 2007, I recall of a bunch of prom attendees got lost and headed towards the pool. They got scared when this awesome Kenpachi cosplayer came walking in front of them with a Yachiru on his shoulders. You could hear the screams from across the the hotel.

My first year at Anime North (about 5 years ago).

Since the con is held at a motel and a con center on opposite sides of the street, there are always cosplayer crossing/j-walking across the street. I love seeing people's faces in cars when they're stopped at a red. (It also helps that the con is a few minutes away from Toronto's main airport :3 )

I overheard one person ask once "Excuse me, is this some sort of giant Halloween party?" and the reply from someone dressed as Ichigo said "Naw, it's an anime convention, google it."

AB was held in the same hotel as one of those "talent search" photography things, so all these catty beauty queen bitches were walking around the con and making fun of all the "Freaks".

I was riding in the elevators with a group and took a line from a comedian (Can't remember which one), but was like "Wow, this beauty search thing is popular! There's so many of you, I don't think the hotel can hold em... next year they might have to have it in a mother's self emptiness."

The mom's in the elevator looked at me like I had just slapped them across the face.

    Felt good, man.

On a 29-floor ride from the top floor of a hotel to the lobby I explained cosplay to an older gentleman in a very nice suit, probably a very wealthy lawyer or something. He was honestly curious as to what the people in costume were all about.

I ended the conversation with saying that we were all normal people in costume and that nothing too strange comes out of conventions like the one across the street, and then the elevator doors opened and Godzilla was trying to get in the elevator.

He gave me the funniest goddamn look I have ever seen. It was like confused apprehension combined with exasperation.

I remember back in 2007 when i went to AX some guy in borders asked me and my friends what was going on, so we told him "It's an anime convention." He looks at his friend with the most puzzled look on his face and says "What's an anime convention?" we chuckle and explain it, afterwards he asks "so where's it at?" my friend points to the LB convention center across the street at the Giant AX 07 banner and the guy goes "ooohhhhhh so THAT's what that is."

At one convention that I went to in a really small hotel had a "normal" wedding. The bride was furious. I mean, a couple thousand weeaboos were crowding the halls and yelling. The usual stuff. I thought it was pretty ridiculous.

I still wonder if they booked the wedding knowing the convention was gonna be there, or if the hotel just neglected to tell them.

There was an old (probably retired) Marine on the elevator with us late Saturday night. The people I was with were being loud and drunk and dancing. I felt a bit bad for him, but then I took a peek at him out of the corner of my eye. He was smiling to himself.

Rude as we may have been, I think he understood that this was the chance for us to have fun and enjoy our life and liberty. The things he had probably fought for and maybe even laid down his life for. Maybe I was reading too much into it, but I think he was proud of himself there for a moment, and for good reason.

I rode the elevator with a couple (mid 40-ish) who were vacationing at the gaylord for their anniversary, and they asked me if this was like the 'anime party thing' in Baltimore. I said yeah, and they asked me about the series I was cosplaying from, because they had vacationed in Baltimore the year before during Otakon, and had watched and enjoyed Guren Laagen after talking to a cosplayer there. They were really friendly and nice, they said it must be their fate to watch anime, because they seemed to be following conventions around.

Old grannies at the bookfair who loved my RCO-uniform and the old guy in the metro who told me, my Germany-cosplay reminded him of his youth were by far the scariest experiences.
And the drunken skinhead in the metro who stormed right towards me and screamed "HITLER!!!"

Funny was when a whole family from India saw us at Frankfurt main station and asked us, where they can see our show and if this was a tradition in our country.

Another funny experience where two guys who worked at McDonalds and really took a stake, if my friends and my silver hair was real (cosplaying as Kadaj and Yazoo).
And we were sometimes asked if we were sisters, when we cosplayed this. Of course the answer was "No, brothers."

Nope, this year I'll be GAR!lock Simon from Gurren Lagann and 0th Squad Captain from Bleach.

Pic is me from last year.

Now, my con story is when I was... 15 I think me and my dad drove to Anime Iowa, which was my first con. He's a mechanic, cool-type dad but still it was kind of a culture shock to see everyone like it was. He was joking with me about my experience all the way home.

There was a wedding held once in the same hotel as the convention. I heard a lot of old people cursing and a lot of little kids trying to explore the convention. I thought it was pretty funny.

There was also Metrocon 08 where they had this redbull thing going on and a bunch of drunk guys in their 20's kept on taking pictures of girls. There was a Yuffie cosplayer there who fell asleep and some guy was trying to touch her I think? A friend of mine stopped them before he could.

Ohayocon last year, there was the con, a Christian youth group convention, and a bunch of cheerleading teams were staying at the hotel the con was held at. The cheerleaders kind of gave the cosplayers a lot of dirty looks. I met a guy and his sons who were there for the youth group thing. They were pretty nice folks, asked what the con was about and why everyone was dressed up, asked to see my props (I was cosplaying Alucard at the time).

Then there was AWA two years ago where they had some carpenters/woodworking convention and some sort of baby care convention. Lots of odd looks from the mothers with their strollers.

Oh, yeah. At Katsu, a group of Marines asked to get their pictures with me and my friends. This guy was trying to cop a feel, but good thing he couldn't find my ass under all those flowers.

I also talked with an older gentleman who was politely intrigued by the whole thing. I kind of apologized for the con; this was some annual event that's VERY well-to-do, and was Katsu was causing a big headache for them. And he said that he was glad to see us all there, because it reminded him and the other vets of the liberty that they had fought for. I hnnghed into next week.

I was waiting in the lobby for my brother. As I wandered around and took pictures, I noticed some very confused people dressed like they were going to a gala or wedding or something. A staff member was directed them towards the other side of the convention centre as quickly as possible, but they were all pretty shocked at the costumes.

Then, in comes a perfect Master Chief and 300 Spartan.

These two guys in suits and ties just stop, look at them, and started yelling, "MASTER CHIEF!" It was pretty funny to see them sprint across the lobby and fanboy for a good ten minutes.

Yeah, Katsucon this year was pretty crazy with normal people, but they were all kind of cool about it.

The best thing probably was at the Umineko shoot at midnight on Saturday, one of the old army guys came over and wanted pictures with all the Beatrices, so we put him into a picture and had him pose as Kinzo a few times. He was pretty cool. Drunk, but cool.

Then at the same shoot these younger drunk guys came over and posed with the stakes. He kept saying stuff like I... I DON'T KNOW WHO YOU GUYS ARE BUT YOU ARE AWESOOMMEEE. It was a little hilarious.

The worse was when this Miku came over to hug the Len I was with and almost ran into this christian guy who started yelling at her. We came across her later that day and apparently he came back later to yell at her again.

Other than that everyone else there seemed okay with it. I had a bunch of people ask me what was going on and where we were from and stuff and when we posed for pictures a bunch of normal people would join in and take pictures too. It was fun.

I remember another funny moment. I was in my Major from Hellsing cosplay at last year's Otakon, I was stopped by some black husband and wife normies as I heading from the PF Changs to where I was to meet my photographer for my private shoot. They asked me what was going on and I told them an anime convention. They asked who I was and informed "I'm the Major of the Nazi Vampired Letztes Bataillon". They kept asking me for more and more questions to their delight.

It all ended with me posing with them...giving a Seig Heil...I don't know if that's awesome or just...akward. Especially when we're right near a major crossroads in Baltimore, where everyone can see you.

Besides being asked for a group photo with a vacationing family and having our wigs admired by the waitstaff, the truly shining moment was when we left the restaurant. As we were leaving, a party of drunk black people were entering. Some memorable quotes:

Again at AX, a woman and her two young boys from the Christian con came up to me (dressed as Mario) and my friend (dressed as Daisy). She asked where we had gotten our Yoshi plushes since her boys were big fans. They were disappointed when they learned you needed admission to buy stuff in the Dealer's Room. My friend took pity on her and went inside to get two Yoshis with money provided by the woman. She was so grateful she gave my friend a "tip" of ten dollars. Then the kids took a picture with us.

FINALLY someone mentions this! There must've been a good 3 year run where Ohayo was booked alongside Jesuscon. Made for some pretty hilarious moments like Ohayo '06, IIRC, where I spotted a Wolfwood cosplayer who trolled the Jesuscon attendees by carrying his Punisher upside-down all weekend. There was also last year when I was with some friends who were going on about crashing Jesuscon... within earshot of some of their attendees who seemed only too happy to have us there.

At Connecticon last year I was cosplaying Ashura from RG Veda and staying at a hotel a bit from the con. At one point I'm the only one in costume while we're waiting for the elevator and this group of drunk 20-somethings shows up behind us and starts laughing and going, "Oh my god!" I figure it'll be a 'what a freak' conversation, but I smile at them anyway. They asked what was going on, I explained and their faces just lit up. One girl got all wide-eyed and excited, gasping, "Are you in a play?" I said no, just that I liked to dress up. She got this delighted smile, not at all condescending, and clasped my hands, going, "That's GREAT. That is so great." They held the elevator to keep talking to me and take a picture. They were drunk out of their minds, but their enthusiasm was totally adorable.

-Another story about the military guys at Katsu...I was riding a pretty full elevator down when it stopped on a floor with a guy dressed as a maid and a bunch of military guys. The guy in front was older and bald and as soon as the doors opened he said, "I want to get in THAT elevator!" but it was a little too full for anyone else to fit in comfortably.

-At Ichibancon, there were a ton of normal people around since the con was so small. The best though was a french woman that wanted pictures of her kids with my friend, but one of the kids was afraid because she was in a creepy costume.

-The other most memorable was AZ 08, a bunch of us went out to IHOP after the masq, most of us still half in costume. Our waitress asked us if we had come from a basketball game.

ALA being booked in hotels every year draws some interesting people. Like, a few years back, there was some incident with a Christian convention. Then again, this may not be ALA, because so many people tell it...

The guy gets into the elevator, dressed in, like, the most gothic clothes. In comes an old lady, dressed in Sunday best with a bible. She just kept STARING at the guy. So, in an attempt to get her back, as he's getting off the elevator, in a satanic voice, he says "Going...DOWN?"
Sounds like something that could have happened at one of the cons out here, christians seem to like booking conventions at places that have anime cons that same weekend.

That kind of reminds me of how, when my father and brothers went to go see the Olympics, this Italian guy came up to them in a restaurant/bar and asked them if they played any sports. And since they speak Italian too, they said that they played hockey. He got all excited and asked my dad if he was the coach, and he laughed and said he was, as a joke. But after having a meal with the guy he patted my brothers on the backs and told them to 'win the gold', and only then did they realize that he actually thought they were on the Olympic team.

They pointed to their camera, then me, then each other and we took possibly 10 pictures of them in different poses with me. I thought they were Japanese tourists or locals--I caught maybe three words of Japanese as they spoke to each other--and were at the con because they were familiar with anime. Not so. They asked in broken English why I was dressed up ("Dress up? Why?") and didn't seem to understand my attempts at explaining. They also shrugged when I mentioned anime. In the end, they just smiled and said, "Princess. Princess."

This past summer, some of my friends and I spent a day going around the city in Sith robes and doing lightsaber fights and generally being goofs. We had almost every security guard we ran into harass us like jerks. Every cop we met thought we were awesome.

While I was walking down the street to meet the group, I saw this one kid who was wearing a tshirt with a stormtrooper on it looking at me with glee. To humour him, I clicked my lightsaber on as I passed him. The kid just about died with glee, it was adorable. :3

Our group past this one busker on a street corner who was playing the bagpipes, and when he saw us, without missing a beat, he started playing the Star Wars theme. We all ran back and gave him all the loose change we had with us.

We had tourists from San Francisco, China, Holland, France, and England ask for our photos through out the day, too. :3 Felt good man!

Although I think part of why we got so much positive attention was because we did this during Pride Week.

with conventions i haven't really met anyone who didn't know what was going on, but if we went out to eat or something that was a little different haha some would ask the usual questions and they where always very nice about it, to me at least. though not everyone is so nice. in one of the malls close to where i live a anime store would have a kind of 'event' every so often. you could go in cosplay, you could do a little kind of skit so to say, play games to win prices plus the anime would be on sale. at first it was rather nice, a decent group would show up and it was nice to spend a day at the mall with friends. some people who didn't know what was going on where very sweet and just curious about it. we would even find some people who liked anime but never knew about cosplay or of the conventions, so it was nice to be able to give them information about it.
the bad side of this, allot of the stores didn't like it at all. a smaller group of us decided to go into a store and the manager plus another worker followed us. she almost forced us out because she blamed us for taking pictures in the store when it was another costumer close to us who she ignored. that was before things got really bad. the other stores complained about us so much, simply because we where in costume, that the next time i went they forced everyone who was participating to stay within the food court or the center of the mall where it was being held. they had security watch us and if we attempted to go anywhere else to go shopping they would stop us and tell us to take parts of our costumes off, or sometimes ask us to change before allowing us to go throughout the mall. i haven't gone to one since, and i honestly never want to step foot in that mall again.

During MMC '09 (Germany), most of the Hellsing cosplayers and a couple of people dressed as Trinity Blood were meeting outside of the building - plus me and another guy as the Captain.

As we walked past an old lady, she said "ohh, another Landser!". Then she looked at the black Trinity Blood uniforms, gave them a big smile and said "you look just like the young SS men back in my youth!".

I didn't know whether to be angry or laugh my ass off :V

Most Germans weren't cruel people- actually most of them were good. But they went along with orders from higher-ups. There was a study back in the day that proved most people went along with what an authoritative figure told them to. I'd take it as a good thing. I don't take old ladies who grew up in the racist 50s complimenting me when I dress up in lolita as a bad thing.

I think my favorite was day zero at ALA. Me being a dumbass showed up without a room to stay in that night. Once again being a dumbass, I decided to stay up all night and wander the streets of Los Angeles in a Pedo Bear suit. Freaked out a bunch of bums, got a few honks from cars, and had a photo-op with the bell boy at the hotel connected to the Denny's. Bonus points for having a warm bearsuit in the fog.

    -------con 08

I was in street clothes and one of the con guests got on after me. Some drunk Bros got on and stated talking about all the fat, ugly nerd etc. So me and the guest start messing with the guys talking about how sad the nerds where. The guest says "Oh yeah, you know anyone into those japanimation cartoons is a virgin." The drunks agreed and chuckled.

I smiled and laughed because I knew what was coming. The doors opened on the bottom floor to a crowd of con-goers. Then all the fangirls rushed forward and squeed "SCOTT McNEIL!!! They tackled him and he looked right at the dudes and mouthed "Oh yeah." while enjoying his group hug.

Dubya. Tee. Eff. Is this like... some kind of con urban legend? I've heard the EXACT same story, word for word, told about an attendee at Ohayocon. The only differing detail is that the cosplayer was dressed as (pre-acid bath) Raziel from Soul Reaver.

At Anime North last year I had a random guy in business attire stop me and say "You look normal- do you know what's happening here!?"

I told him I was just picking up the rubbish from the concert, brother.

This once I was in half-cosplay going to a shoot and passed by a very touristic part of the city. Amongst all the people that stopped me for pictures this old Indian couple was especially kind and made lots of questions. Then they took a picture with me and asked my e-mail to send me the picture later. I gave them my college address, because it's easier to write than my regular name. They looked at it and the man gave me his card and told me to send him an e-mail about any project.

I look at his card and it comes that the gentleman was actually a professor at a German University, on my field.

At ALA '10, this couple stops my friends and I and ask, in a rather rude manner, why everyone was dressed up so weirdly. Immediately, one of my friends responds, "We were just wondering the same thing."

Mind you, we were in full blown Kuroshitsuji cosplay.

At one con [doesn't exist anymore], it was always booked on the same day as a Buddist monk thingy and an electronic fair. It was kinda funny to see how all the saffron-clad monks would just stare at the cosplayers and turn their hands up and pray. The electronic fair guys just ignored us. >__>

At Ohayocon this year at like 4am, some dumb skank from the rave went and grabbed change from in front of the counter to pay for her stuff with. The thing is, this wasn't a give a penny take a penny jar, it was a charity thing.

I asked the cashier if she was sick of all of the nerds and she said "It's not so bad, but that last girl took some change from the child cancer fund jar" so I threw all the change I had on me (which at this point in the con I'd accummulated, what, something like 5 dollars in loose change?) to replace the 7 cents she stole, and the cashier got damn excited and complimented me on my costume (which I wasn't wearing at the time, just a fancy shirt).

Not a worthwhile donation by any means, but christ, people, treat those poor unfortunate souls that have to deal with our kind during cons with a little respect.

I was dressed as bobble head nurse from Silent Hill. I got in the lift to go downstairs to get some food and visit an ATM. Some "normal" people were already in the lift. I walked in, smiled. Went to push the button, but saw it was already pushed, and said "I guess we'll be going down together!" with a gore/blood-covered grin. I then giggled. They were horrified - apparently a whole group of christians were staying in that hotel for another convention that was on elsewhere, some religious thing.

    Felt good, man.

"Hey, what are you guys doing?" I heard from beside me. As I looked, I realized I was in an elevator with Marines.
"You guys are marines? You stationed at Pendleton?" They confirmed. "So, like, you ever play Metal Gear Solid? Gears of War? Ok, Gears of War. You know those bitching armors they have? Well, have you ever wanted to make them? So did we. so we did. And we show them off. And it's not just games like that, it's series of fictional characters."
The Marines looked confused. "Why would you make it in the first place?"
"Why did you join the Marines. Like, seriously."
    "To get bitches."
    "Exactly."

Katsucon 16 was the best example of what I call "Peaceful Con-existence". Meaning that people either don't mind the larger more dominant con, or enjoy the the dominant con. I saw people from the christian troubled marriage con either minding their own business, or talking or taking photos of the con attendees. Even the people from the military ball were actually going to the Saturday dance with the ravers.

I even recorded a few videos of me talking to the normals regarding the hotel and the convention.

Katsucon 16 was truly a major and rare example of peaceful con-existence in a major convention center and resort.

Oh I just remembered one more from Katsu.
Thursday evening I was chilling on a couch in the lobby waiting for the rest of my crew to show up.
Eventually, a /very/ southern family seated themselves around me, and their conversation turned to figuring out why there were so many younger folk and people dressed up. (I was on my laptop with earbuds in, but was no longer listening to anything; rather good eavesdropping-without-being-obliged-to-say-anything method)
Eventually the lady of the group concludes, "I'll bet any amount of money they're here for a Harry Potter convention!" A bit off the mark, but not a bad guess!
