ngl I like the show - when I don't think about any actual history, I mean. It's ridiculous and fun, and the characters are charming in their own way. but the fans are just awful.

My girlfriend likes this series. Let's just say I can't wait until she stops liking this retarded ass show.

There was a brief period where I tried to get into the comic, but I just couldn't.

This show is fucking up my con-related activities in a major way.

For example, I cosplay James Sunderland from Silent Hill 2. Granted, this isn't the best cosplay in the world, but it's something casual, and coming along.

American Flag + Brown Jacket = America.

That isn't the end of it even. Not only have I been stopped for comments on my "America" costume - I have been asked for pictures! The fact that the fanbase has such low standards is almost painful! On the other hand, when the demographic is almost strictly teenage girls, you can't have too high of expectations. Even Death Note wasn't that bad - at least it was mixed genders.

...Is it bad to want to cosplay from this series without being very well-versed in the anime or the original comic? I always thought that Hetalia could be really fun to cosplay just because people of different nationalities (or even fans of different countries) could see the charm and humor in the stereotypes the characters represent.

Of course, these whimsical hopes are quickly dashed when I see a fatass America cosplayer macking on Russia. Seriously, what the hell.

A good portion of my 12th-grade class liked Hetalia to some extent (it became trendy and we would watch it in the lunch room.) Most of the Hetalia fans I've met are more normal than average anime fans - then again, I haven't cosplayed Hetalia or gone to panels on it or something, so the lunatic fringe remains unknown to me.

I have loads of friends in this fandom who are plenty sane and generally cool people (yes, we are sometimes outnumbered). Obviously the ones who don't behave themselves are going to be more visible at cons, etc. though, unfortunately. I've met a lot of people through cons and the APHWC that I've continued to talk to online and in person who I now consider really great friends and all around awesome. They range in age from 14 to almost 30.

Yes this fandom is full of obnoxious and no that probably will get worse before it gets better, but I am really tired of the generalization that everything about a series and its fandom is bad based solely on the individuals who just happen to stand out for being out of control, y'know?

Oh trust me I know. But I think people forget that the obnoxious fans exist in almost all fandoms. The bigger the fandom, the more obvious it is. Though it's not going to help once the anime is subbed (it was already popular enough as is).

I can't say that fans haven't killed a series for me before, Or at least make me get less invloved with it. I remember once upon a time I liked Vampire Knight. But you just kind of have to deal and ignore the generalization, I don't really ever see it changing.

If your cosplaying the original then 99.99% chance you'll get glomped for being "kawaii-desu" if you cosplay a different variation of Russia that not many people know and is a kickass costume, 75% chance they don't know who/what you are. I support cosplayers who do variations of hetalia.

I have to say I loved the comic first and then fell into the show. I am also 26 years of age and do an okay America, thinking about starting on my France soon.
But the fan-base surprises me, this hasn't really gotten a lot of publicity and everyone seems to know about it. I have to say I do rage about the fan-base fail.
