See, this is where I'll respectfully disagree. The actual costume could be better, and that was my fault for not being able to manage my time better between my own costume, his costume and schoolwork in such a short timeframe, but that mask is nothing short of amazing. All the cracked were dremeled as opposed to simply painted on. Believe me, the mask is far more impressive than the rest of the costume.

In most cons, professionals aren't allowed to compete, much less a commissioned costume. I can understand if it was actually GSTQ in that costume competing, but it wasn't, it was some Sailor Moon cosplayer who wanted a moment to shine in a costume she probably paid good money for.

The costume is gorgeous though, no doubt about that.

I dunno, it's like >>2541565 said, it basically kills the fun of it all. And no, I'm not being butt hurt, but to me and a good many others, that Rachael deserved BIS, knowing she made it herself, for herself without a shop, employee's, and outsourcing pieces.

It's really nothing against staff, but more so Kathy herself...it was a dick move.

I think what made people more frustrated about it was that the playing field isn't level when amateur costume makers that normally enter the contest have to compete with someone who owns better tools and has more hours to spend on the costumes. However, I can't speak for the cosplayers that entered the contest overall obviously since I did not enter.

I think its definitely something that should be looked at in the future as to how to address it in the rules. If this year is any indication on how Ohayocon deals with critiques, I'm sure the matter would be addressed.

Very true. Especially when it's not her money even that she's spending to make a costume for herself. The customer wanted the best possible product and paid an incredible sum, which obviously most other individual cosplayers can't afford to spend on just themselves. She made money on it and won an award.

To be honest, I had only heard about GStQ only in passing previously and had no idea she was -that- good.

Oh she is. She's very, very good. Once I heard she was competing, we were thisclose to just calling it quits, but at the last possible minute decided to go for it, knowing fully well we didn't have a chance to win poopdicks but doing it just because we did spend all of that time and tears and blood on our costumes.

Oh well, I'm happy with my award. I'm content with most of the winners. I'm still on the fence about the Beryl cosplayer entering while having her commissioners there with her to make it valid, but dems the breaks, I guess.

Wait, it was supposed to be a nicer kind of paper?

The paper wasn't even signed and they misspelled my name in a far more unique way than in the past and the paper was all bent weirdly. Still feels bad.

I'm sorry, I'm all for nice prizes, but 20 dollars for top prizes is kinda ridiculous. But that's just me cause you can only really use that to put towards a wig from cosworx since nothing is worth just 20 bucks there. Doop doop!

I see no mad shit talking. What I do see is someone who followed the rules of a contest. However, I personally have a problem with a contest that allows someone to wear a purchased costume to compete, regardless if they are present at the competition. Do you see someone bringing the child labor from China with them to a con and saying "Oh, I'm wearing it but they were the one chained to a sewing machine for 15 hours"?
No. This was a silly thing to include in a contest for hobbyists. I think if they want to have a place for professionals to compete they should have a professional (not master, professional as in you sew for a living) class where people who sew for a living can compete against others who sew for a living. I also have a problem with the fact that the most impressive parts of this costume (shoulders, headpiece, wig) were all made by some other people and not GSTQ. They are obviously integral parts of the costume and it would look silly without them but yet they were not present at the con so...what was the point?

A lot of people don't register their Hallway Award wins, so that's why they aren't reported. We ask them to come to the desk so we can get their name and info, and people just don't. From memory, and I know this isn't all of them:

    White Queen and Mad Hatter
The three "performance art" Kodamas (Spirited Away sprites)
    A ghostbuster
    Ashlotte (Soul Caliber IV)
a lolita, and a Catrina (don't remember the series) with a lot of beading. I'll post the list once it is in my possession.

Those are just the ones I know about because the staffers told me about it. We don't give them away like candy the way some cons do - they still go to really good costumes. Usually the wearer doesn't compete them because they are non-asian influenced and aren't allowed to compete, or they've already won an award somewhere.

Blue foam, but that's all 4ng's work. He carved it with a hot knife and then handsanded them all (All those hearts were done by his hand, separately). He finished it off after sanding with some gesso, and then a couple of layers of Liquitex Dark Red and then when that dried he clear coated it to give it that shine factor to them. That was the deal with all the hearts and bow.

Okay, thought I covered it but I'll clarify. I'm not going to prevent someone from competing just because they make money at their preferred hobby. GSTQ/Lab 604 didn't run away with the BiS award. Several of the other Masters Division competitors (not "professionals") gave the Beryl costume a run for its money - it just happened to be a little better. I'd say all of the Masters this year have the skills needed to sell costumes as a full time job if they chose to do so, they just don't. GSTQ does, and I'm not going to punish her for it.

We actually had a problem with an air bubble on one of them and needed to scrap it. I think you might have a better time covering it with some gesso instead of woodglue. But he can tell you more on that than me. But the stuff is pretty secure, except my bow had a chunk of paint ripped off cause I accidentally put the sticky side of velcro from my elbow guard on it after taking the entire thing off. >>2542796

What causes the air bubbles and eating away at the paint is the clear coat...generally, you're not supposed to mix paints (acrylic and enamel)...so that, on top of the fact the foam can melt because of the clear, means you have to use very thick coats of high quality acrylic. Also, when you mark your design on to the foam, don't use anything dark colored, as the clear can and will eat through some of the layers of the acrylic (not damaging, just sometime will show the dark marks if say, a sharpie was used to transfer it).

So if i stuck to all acrylic paints and an acrylic clear coat that should prevent future bubbles? I guess a bunch of coats of paint could work too but if im going to put that much time into it I may as well paper mache or coat it in epoxy resin or something.

Thanks for confirming my thoughts. I assumed that since the glue was porous the spray paint ate through to the foam over time. Since all of my props on foam look flawless the day of the con but a few months later for 2nd time around they look like fricking cheese that has been stuck under a broiler.

GSTQ has never gone to an OH con before this or really gone to any cons to compete with the costumes she's made except this one time, which just leads me to believe that after all of her previous failed attempts at trying to win, she had to go about it this way.

We had our best showing ever. If that changes, then I would consider changing the rules. Right now, I see no reason to change them. If we start drawing a ton of "professionals", then maybe we'll add a pro division.

Different cons offer different options. If you don't like ours, you can compete somewhere that doesn't allow professionals. If we ever go that route, I'll be sure to publish the info. I'm not particularly interested in making Ohayocon a clone of every other convention.

Attention whoring glory? Are you fucking kidding me? ALL COSPLAYERS are in this hobby for the attention. No one can honestly say they make their costumes and go to these conventions only for "love" of their fandom. If this were truly the case, more people would be making costumes and just keeping it to themselves (no pictures, online accounts, personal websites about costuming, etc.). EVERYONE is wearing these costumes to be SEEN.

Why can't people just be civil and be happy for all the masquerade winners? Shit, man. So many sandy vaginas in this thread.

    >I'd say all of the Masters this year have the skills needed to sell costumes as a full time job if they chose to do so, they just don't. GSTQ does, and I'm not going to punish her for it.

I do have to disagree with you on this point. The problem I have with it after I thought about it is simply out of pocket cost. GStQ got paid, at her job to make that costume and was able to win an award. Other Master's spent their free-time, apart from work and school and their own money on a costume that gave GStQ's a run for it's money.

Let's say an architect is paid by a millionaire to build a house by himself, and it's fantastic in every way. Then your little-more-than-average Joe, who could probably be an architect if he wanted to, goes and spends a million dollars out of pocket building a house over the course of 10 years. If Average Joe and the Millionaire who wanted the house both run against each other in a competition, the Average Joe worked a hell of a lot harder to see his dreams realized just because he wanted to. It wasn't something he just happened to be doing already that won him an award.

That may be a little more grand in scale, but it's essentially the same thing. By these rules I could just run down to my local tailor and have him make me a costume, enter it in master's with him by my side and win over someone who spent a year toiling over their hobby.

If there is a Pro catagory does that mean ANYONE who takes ANY kind of commission? Or someone who does it full time? I only know of less then 5 commissioners that do it full time. What if a Pro wears her own costume? Does she compete as pro?

Also does that mean they still not allowed to win best in show? Whats the point of having best in show if one category is just going to be denied being in it. I'm not a pro, but I might win in my catagory which makes me happy but if I want to be BiS and the Best in show is a pro then I just need to be better. I'm glad standards are high.

Not taking into account the fact that the tailor/architect/whoever also put many years into making it where they were ability-wise.

I don't really think taking pride in your work and wanting to be recognized for it is such a bad thing. Not to mention the fact that you put an award like that up on your site and it makes you look a bit better to potential buyers.

I'm not positive, but I think Pro is someone who makes their living, or a significant part of it doing what they do.

Where to draw the line at a cosplayer who also happens to work in a costume shop and does part time seamstress work and a full blown designer with a store or someone working in the hollywood special effects/props/costume department is hard to say tho.

I've been on both sides of this before, meaning i've worked as a seamstress in a shop before, but I've lost in Masqs. to people who have design company funding. But there's certainly an argument at some level when amateur goes beyond being amateur even if you aren't a professional.

I guess that's largely why the class divisions exists.

It is practically unheard of. She's the only pro to enter Ohayocon. Most cons state in their rules that professionals who make a living working on costumes are prohibited from entering - but many people have already stated this already, and made some great points, so no point in me re-hashing it.

Hence the problem and why it needs changed. No one could compete against that, and the fact she won a free pass to come back next year, I'm sure she'll be doing it again, especially when being encouraged by the cosplay head.

I think it's less about the fact a pro entered, but more about the fact someone who bought the pro's product entered.

The product in question was very well made and more the likely would have won if it was bought or not.

But there is an ethics issue here. Money was traded hands with this product and it was, to my best knowledge, the customer who asked to enter it. To enter something you have purchased into a hobby based contest knowing it would be a far better quality due to it's makers is not ethical. It's demoralizing to the cosplay community and your self.

Oddly I agree with the judges for allowing it; there are no rules that clearly disallow this from happening. But there is a level of personal ethics and judgment that did not happen with in this whole matter.

Hopefully next year there will be an amendment to the rules to fix this and other cons will take this as a warning and look closer into their own rules to side step this type of issue for the rest of 2010.

Agreed. There's really no blame to be found here, everybody was within rules, but there was still an ethical call on GSTQ and the Beryl's parts that could have been made better.

All in all: good show AyaBlue, here's to next year.

They need to get the fuck over it. There's nothing wrong with models competing. It's not like the model got the prize. I've considered having someone model a costume for me plenty of times because I'm so shy, but the pure amount of wank on here is really discouraging.

wouldn't it make sense to invite these pros as guests next year. If gstq fashion is good enough to do this for a living should she be the one judging craftsmen rather then other cosplayers who do this part time?

I don't really even have a problem with "pros" entering their own costumes, but it's really awkward to enter a costume that you were paid money to make.

It was obviously a beautifully done costume and I get that there were no rules against them entering, but maybe this is a good opportunity to go back and revisit the rule board. I'd be kind of sad to see masquerades turning into pros shoving models in costumes and throwing them across the stage.

Except that's completely not what GSTQ did.

    This. So much this.

I don't think it's being butthurt for someone who makes costumes as a hobby to not want to go against people who do it for a living. They want to compete against someone at their own skill-level.

You can see the obvious division here - people who are either friends of the Beryl cosplayer or people who don't sew will mostly likely take the "it's OK for models to enter, so shut up" stance. People who make their own costumes, who do not do this for a living, but as a hobby they enjoy (and the occasional butthurt loser) will most likely be the ones who are bawwing for a professional category.

Either way, no rules were broken. GSTQ got the award, and the Beryl cosplayer got the 30 seconds of fame she paid handsomely for. That costume had to have cost a mint.

Though I have to wonder how orchestrated this was. Seeing as she was seen posting on a forum that she was going to just enter the hall contest. And then, magically, GTSQ and Lab604 show up to a convention they have never been to before.

I'm not saying that's what they did, but you have to admit that that's what this sets a precedent for, because there is technically nothing in the rules against THAT, either.

Which is why it needs fixed.

So what if next year GSTQ is the only Pro that shows up? She Automatically wins, but is disqualified from winning best in show? I think its fine to have a pro division, but no division should be eliminated from being able to be best in show, otherwise its not really best in show anymore. From my understanding of reading this tread, the pro just happen to win best in show. It would be a different story if they won best in masters, and another costume won best in show because its not fair to the other masters.

    >ethical issue

SO MUCH THIS. If GSTQ had entered herself and worn her own creation I would have a lot less issue with this whole thing. But the simple fact that money changed hands makes this look very bad on the cosplayer's part....to suddenly show up on stage wearing a purchased costume in a craftsmanship contest would feel SO awkward to me. I understand she didn't win the award personally, but the whole scenario leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

This is different from putting a dress you made on a friend because you're shy and don't want to wear it yourself...

The only thing I disagree with is that all the HMs came from Masters. I think any division should be eligible for an Honorable Mention. Or if they're going to be HMs dedicated solely to one category, add two or four more freaking awards. for HM Novice and Journeyman. That way the majority of the participants that would have been close to winning their category don't feel screwed. I know you all want to keep it "elite" and shit but there is nothing wrong with having 1st and 2nd runner ups.

I agree with this, it feels like for as big a contest as Ohayo has, it has far too few awards. I mean, no Judge's Awards?

I remember a few years ago there where complaints that there where too many awards. That may be one reason why they are now choosing to have so few.
    >> Anonymous 02/02/10(Tue)16:52 No.2547662
    >>2547645

No, because they don't want any of their judgments to be "subjective."

I do believe (at least, it was posted on coscom as so) that they use a grading scale to decide the winners & other awards (there is also personal preference and discussion, but that's not really known by anyone save for the judges). What I imagine happen is they took the highest scorers from novice, journey, and master and those won their divisions...then the next highest score from all around won the HM's (as a novice did win one as well). In theory, the master entries should have some of the highest all around scores being master class.

...of course, I could be wrong, but if the judging outline was as so stated, that would explain it.

    >>2547645

I disagree with this...I think Ohayo is probably the hardest con to win something at because of this, and it really fosters competition...there are no BS of "good-enough" awards.

    >>2547013
    >>2546996

I also agree with these posts. The staff and judges did an excellent job this year. A huge improvement over last year, and I think people will be hard pressed to disagree with any of the decisions (craft at least, I still don't know who won what in performance). The issue people are having are against GSTQ herself, not the staff or judges.

They may be of equal talent but odds are the Architect could make it faster, in say 5 years. Either way, that's not the point, it's that even if they took the same amount of time to build, the average joe saved money over time and toiled through his free time to make it, while the Architect was in a way "sponsored" to make a house.

I have no problem with a Pro entering even the Master's division if it's their own money they spent on their own costume. It really was an ethical issue on the part of the girl who bought the costume because it put both the Judges and the commissioner in a tough spot. But if GStQ comes back next year and enters a costume she's wearing that she paid for out of pocket, then technically she's just the same as anyone else, seeing as she spent her free time and her own money on it. There could be someone who was a professional tailor entering and winning, just not in the cosplay world and as long as they were using their own resources, that would technically be fine.
