Hey /cgl/, so I've decided that I'm going to try and cosplay for a convention that's in several months, and it will be my first attempt at cosplaying. I've been to one convention before, and I didn't wear anything aside from street clothes, but everyone looked like they had so much fun!

So, I want to cosplay as a Heavy from Tf2. I'm a chubby woman, so I already know that my choices for cosplay is limited, but I happen to like Tf2 and this is something I'd like to try and spin.

The problem is, I don't have the know-how or the equipment to make the gun. I plan on finding boxing gloves in lieu of them (the Heavy's unlockable melee weapon). But how much trouble will this put me in?

Being that this will be my first attempt at cosplaying, what can I expect as far as things go? Am I going to be hated because I didn't make the gun? What were some of the worst experiences /cgl/ has had with their first time cosplaying? Stories/tips/inspiration would be greatly appreciated.
    >> Anonymous 01/24/10(Sun)22:39 No.2520900
In this case I think more people would have problems with you being a female then not having a gun.

If you can just make a sandvich and bring that.

Don't make it look like shit and you'll be fine. Too girly/skanky is annoying usually (some people pull it off well if its a little more girly-- like a curly wig).

You won't be hated for not making the gun and I've never run into any problem doing a fem!TF2 cosplay. In fact, the TF2 fandom so I've seen (TF2chan and in cons) are spectacularly nice.
    >> 2521005 Anonymous 01/24/10(Sun)23:04 No.2521015
I definitely don't plan on making it skanky, I've seen enough horrors on /cgl/ to know better.

What makes a costume shitty? I don't really know the standards as far as costumes go, so, what would be the first thing you'd notice? Inaccuracy?
    >> bloody zoro 01/24/10(Sun)23:06 No.2521025

Inaccuracy isn't TOO bad for TF2 cosplay as long as it looks remotely similar. Like don't use blue jeans for the pants, or don't use a plain red t-shirt for Soldier whose jacket opens up, or don't completely leave out the vest for Sniper or don't use a bubble texture vest for the Sniper or something like that.

The gun could be simple even for a firstie. I see oatmeal containers, fun foam, wrapping paper tubes...It would all come down to painting if you made it using "garbage," making it look aged and worn with use. Bet there are some tutorials on Cosplay.com, though it can be a shitstorm bogging through even a keyword search.

Also, if you want to do a male Heavy, start practicing now with a bald cap and making it blend [as] realistically [as possible] with stage make-up and the like. Stubble and related shadowing will also distinguish you.

If you must do fem!TF2, I'll post the one design I find even slightly acceptable, on all character fronts.

    Extra points for sanvich.

I did this as my first cosplay and I had a blast doing it. I was worried people would have problems since I look nothing like the Heavy, but everyone seemed to like it all right.

My only advice is that if you can't do the gun, PLEASE make the costume as accurate as you can. You don't have to wear a bald cap or anything like that, but get the detailing on the vest, the ammo box, etc.

    >>2521125

Please do post the "acceptable" fem Heavy. I'll have to look around some more if I'm going to find tutorials for the gun, the only one I could actually find was a $75 dollar run through with pvc pipe and such. Don't get me wrong, the end product looked nice, but I don't have any tools.

    >>2521127

I'm going to do my best, thank you for the advice! I'm definitely nervous considering I most likely wont have the gun (which would certainly mean that the costume needs to be right). It probably wont be 100%, but I will NOT do something as stupid as wearing blue jeans and just a red shirt and think I'll be recognized as a Heavy.

Already did. *points at picture in last post*

Props really, really aren't that difficult when using cheap materials like fun foam, card board, card stock, and model magic. I made Cruccio (sp) Thunderwitch's yo-yo thing entirely out of model magic and I was very proud. The trick is time. Taking the time to make them appear as though you used fancy wonderful materials straight out of the game. That means details, proper painting, and no rough edges. :]

    >>2521153

    Haha, whoops! My bad!

-Ah, I see! I'm definitely aiming for a look like that, or at least something like that.

As far as props go, being that I've never done this before, I'm nervous about just jumping in and attempting to make one (I don't know where to get the stuff, tools, etc). If I can find a reasonable tutorial, then maybe I can try giving it a shot, but I've never crafted anything before, let alone something as big as the Heavy's gun!

If I lived closer, I'd help you out with the gun in a heartbeat. In lieu of that, I'll do some sketching and come up with something that could work.

Aside from that, make sure that you really take the time to make the bullets look good for the bandoleer. It's going to be extremely visible the whole time and so you're going to have to make sure that it looks good.

Alright. For the shells on your bandoleer, you'll want to do it to scale so that it fits appropriately to you. Given how the shells look on the Heavy, you'll want something that is about the same length as your shoulder is. By that, I mean it should be from the base of your neck to the top of your shoulder. Should be approximately 6". Coincidentally, this is the length of a .50 BMG shell. You might have to build up the girth a bit to make the shell match, though. Heavy's rounds aren't the most streamlined things in the world.

    Will continue.
    >> Anonymous 01/25/10(Mon)00:06 No.2521288
    >>2521270
    Cont'd

For the base of the shell, you might want to use something like the Crayola markers. Those could be built out with paper mache, tape, whatever. Just make sure that the last layer that you do is something very hard. Should be something that you can spray paint with metallic paint so that you get the proper look. Fortunately, they are metal rounds with full metal jackets so you can spray them a solid color and won't have to worry about taping them off for alternate colors.

    Will continue again.

    Moar continuanz

The bandoleer can be done in a few ways. This is because there are no good shots of it. What I suggest you do is take a band of cloth (or seatbelt, would provide an interesting look/texture) and sew elastic to the "inside" of it, rather the side toward your body, so that you can just slide the shells into it.

That's all I've got for now, hon. Best of luck.

OP, if you don't feel fully confident you'll able to make Sasha/Natascha properly, just don't bother. Just make a Sandvich and KGB, and if anyone asks you where your minigun is, give them a generic response like "Scout/Spy stole Sasha", "it's in for repairs", etc.

It's always been my experience, in cosplaying and everything else, if you can't do something properly, don't bother with it at all. No one will really care; it won't be a big deal.

That being said, Use PVC pipes for the barrels, plastic/wood for assorted other parts, and buckets can work well for the magazine. Use a REALLY strong glue, or nails, or something else, then spray everything black, and the magazine white.

Please god don't cosplay Heavy without making Sasha too! It doesn't look too hard. You could make it almost totally out of different pipes.

But most importantly when cosplaying Heavy, is that you have to look big, even if it is a female version. Kinda defeats the purpose if you're not. If you're not big enough, I recommend thickening out your clothes somehow.
