Macaroons are made without flour and the process is like cookies. Macarons are made with ground almond flour and the process is like meringue. They're not really all that similar. They aren't just "french macaroons".

To add proof, here is an ingredient list for a batch of macaroons:
    3 cups shredded coconut
    1 cup sweetened condensed milk
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    2 teaspoons vanilla extract
    1/2 teaspoon almond extract

And here it is for macarons:
    10 ounce confectioners’ sugar
    10 ounce finely ground almonds
    5 large egg whites
    Pinch of cream of tartar
1/3 cup granulated or superfine bakers sugar

I know I shouldn't care about this so much, but after spending three years in France and enjoying macarons with tea it annoys the hell outta me when people don't realize that French meringue Macarons are NOT related to Scottish Macaroons.

I felt full for awhile. You'd be surprised by changing cups, plates, and portion sizes how the American serving size compares to the rest of the world :/. Just one regular macaroon felt too big for me. I had to drink something inbetween bites because it's way too sweet.

American portions were always way too big for me ever since I was a kid. But then after living in japan for several years I got used to not having FUCKLOADS of sugar in everything so I can't even stand most American sweets; ugh. Or sweet tea, for that matter. When my mom makes a pitcher of tea she puts FOUR FUCKING CUPS OF SUGAR IN IT; AUUUUGH WTFFFF SOUTHERN TEA!?!?!
However the American food style has one very redeeming factor:

Macaroons are flour-free, so they make a good Kosher sweet. FYI, if you're looking for a non-flour cake check out pavlova. Very easy to make meringue cake from Australia or New Zealand depending on who you ask. It tastes a bit like a marshmallow--add lightly whipped cream and fresh fruit and it's delish.

First question would be "how southern are we talking about?" Different geographical locations have different kinds of southern. But to give you an idea, in south Alabama....it's pretty standard to put so much sugar in your tea that you HAVE to mix it in hot or else it won't dissolve.

It's pretty fucked up and I stopped drinking the shit since I don't want to be a diabetic come my 26th b-day.
