    A serious debate.

Personally, I think that only japanese things belong. Star wars characters and american video game characters do not belong at conventions. They are for JAPANESE culture, not American culture.

Anime conventions are meant to be a celebration of anime, so by that logic video game and manga characters shouldn't be allowed either.

It's pretty much unanimously accepted that any cosplay at a con is acceptable that pertains to the interests of the attendees. Which pretty much includes anything to do with pop-culture.

    tl:dr because I don't have enough time.

Anyway, No, It should NOT be Japanese things only. You see, Japan got the idea of cosplay from America when they saw people dressing up as superheroes and Starwars characters.
"Cosplay" was then re-introduced back into America as Cosplay. It is TECHNICALLY an American-made thing. Japan just took the idea and started dressing as their idols.

My local anime convention rules say:
    >All costumes entered in any of the Cosplay Contests must pertain to Anime, Manga, J-pop, J-rock, and/or Video Games from Japan.

I guess that's just for the contest not for the whole con but I still think it's bullshit. Do bigger cons have this rule too? I've never been to one so I don't know.

If you can wear anime shit to a sci fi con and feel accepted you should be able to wear sci fi shit to an anime con and feel accepted. There's a ton of crossover fans so I really don't see why it should matter.

I think its dumb that anime conventions should be "japanese culture only" because YES there is Comic Con and Dragon*con, etc, but a lot of people don't have the money to attend those conventions or even get there. Most American anime cons are about more than anime and manga, they represent the entire fandom that surrounds it. Cosplay is a part of that fandom. Hence any cosplay should be welcomed....if it's good. If I see a dead-on Jack Sparrow or a really good Monarch, I won't complain.

Didn't Comic Con's 2009 "Best in Show" go to a group of women doing original costumes?

Back to the point. Do I think there should be some costume restrictions for award events, sure no problem. How would you feel if an anime con's Best in Show was given to a Steampunk group or some something along those lines, you'd feel a bit insulted. I kinda equate it to a REALLY good breakdancer winning a ballet tournament. Sure we're trying to find the best dancer but within a given style.

But let's assume that you're serious. How the HELL could you enforce Anime/Japanese culture costumes and how would you define what's Japanese or not?

If you say that it has to air in Japan then I'm cosplaying Dr. Doofenshmirtz from Phenias and Ferb cause that cartoon has a Japanese dub.

Ok maybe we can have it be shows of Japanese origin or that were created in Japan. Then you're gonna turn Afro Samurai away cause that was an American production. Also what about Japanese characters from American productions? The Silver Samurai is Japanese but he's made from Marvel.

tl:dr It's impossible to enforce OP's policy. Just have fun in costume folks.

filth at an anime convention? unheard of! what do you call 90% of that weeaboo shit you see walking around that hasnt bathed the entire weekend? Most star wars costumes are spot on and cost thousands of dollars vs. most cosplays which are put together at good will and hot topic. You are fucking ignorant sir.

Why DO Americans have ren faires anyway?

The renaissance was horrible, it was all dysentery and cholera and shit thrown in the rat infested streets. I don't get you people.

Counter-culture social conventions started in England in the late 40's and related trade shows started in Germany shortly afterwards. Cosplay started in America.

There, blown all your minds, subject is done.

I'd be less surprised to see Arsenio Hall at SakuraCon than to see a Comic-Con without a naruto cosplayer.

That being said, I think OP is trolling. To stick to only Japanese ideas would eliminate any anime that was licensed in the US, any game that was licensed in the in the US, any American variation of a Japanese character, any Korean/Chinese/etc. anime/manga/game, any original cosplays, and any anime/game that has its art roots in American culture.

So everyone would have to cosplay this guy.

There is so much stupid here it's surprising. Seriously dude, let people cosplay what they want, it doesn't hurt anyone. Except maaaybe the few obese men dressed as Yuna.

No, the cosplay police will come and arrest you.

I'm not saying you "can't" cosplay as western stuff (like people dressed like Alien) at an Anime con.

But to be honest, it looks highly out of place. It would still be cool, but it would be the equivalent of a Lord of the Rings cosplayer going to a Strictly Star Wars/Star Trek convention.

I guess what I'm saying is that try to fit the costume to the venue. At an anime con, it's better to dress as anime and Japanese game characters, as it fits the theme of the con.

When you go to a con like SDCC, anything goes really as it's not centered around one type of thing.

But despite all this, If your costume is cool, doesn't matter where you wear it. (just might not fit the con is all)

Except don't expect to be omg recognized if you wear something animu at Comic-Con. Especially if you're just in some school girl outfit.

    You know whats hilarious?
There probably isn't a convention in OPs area for MONTHS. He's got nothing better in his life than to look forward to the next one.

I don't think a LOTR cosplayer at a Star Wars con is a good analogy, mainly because Anime cons are for many shows of many different genres while A SW con is just one show which is scifi.

It is like an anime cosplayer going to a western movie and comic books convention.
Which isn't weird because anime and manga are pretty big in western culture now, just like how western movies and comics are fairly popular in japan.

I figure wear what ever costume you want to a convention. I am going to bring Batwoman and Mad Moxxi to more than SDCC that's for sure.
If I was hitting up a Harry Potter con I wouldn't,
But since anime cons are for all different genres such as scifi, horror, comedy, and drama I see no reason why say a Flapjack cosplayer shouldn't be accepted.

Not centering around anything? I thought it was called comicon because it was a comic convention....oh silly me

I cosplayed Olivia Newton John in her Lets Get Physical leotard. I must say it was fuckin awesome but totally lost on all the 11 year olds. But I like it that way.
    >> Anonymous 01/15/10(Fri)09:34 No.2488842
if we are being srs bzns, then only anime and manga characters should be at japanese themed cons. i don't count video games because that isn't the reason behind an ANIME con. but i do enjoy a good non japanese costume at an anime con. most cons these days are becoming just nerd conventions instead of one specific thing.
