How does /cgl/ feel about cosplayers wearing glasses when the character doesnt normally? I have absolutely terrible eyesight and I'd like to cosplay Reisen from Touhou but I would also like to be able to be comfortable. Since I dont plan on contests or anything, is this okay?

Use contact lenses. It could be very annoying to take the glasses on and off all the time.
    >> R.D. !!qFhBIHR1ap8 01/12/10(Tue)17:00 No.2479047
    No.
If you ask me in all honesty, it might not be an absolute crime, but I dislike it very much.
Glasses give the character a totally different air.

They make Inu Yasha look like a hobo, Sailor Moon like a geek-chic and Sephiroth like the-one-teacher-that-you-always-hated.
There are contacts even for people with absolutely bad eyesight (a friend of mine has multiple sclerosis and -10 or something and wears contacts only).
    Use them.
    >> Anonymous 01/12/10(Tue)17:03 No.2479057
Wearing them and taking them off for pictures is pretty generally accepted, I think. I had to do it at NYAF when I forgot to pack my contacts. However, you might feel like a jerk when someone asks for your picture and you have to stop, take your glasses off, find somewhere to hide them, etc. Or you might forget, or someone might take a candid shot of you.

If you can, I'd recommend contacts for convenience's sake.
    >> Soni !!qeHmeAJM1a2 01/12/10(Tue)17:08 No.2479082
Oh fellow blind cosplayer, I generally wear contacts, but there was one instance where I had no more contacts nor time to aquire an extra batch of contacts before the con I attended, so I wore my glasses.

It was really difficult to constantly remember to take off my glasses, since, as you probably know, it feels completely unnatural to not wear your glasses. But if you're doing it for fun, then don't worry too much about it. I still have pictures floating around with my glasses on while in costume, but I don't think people were offended by it, because frankly, I'd rather have vision than none.

this. I'm not too picky on hall cosplay photos (if you remember, good for you, but hall photos tend to be all sorts of fail, anyway). If you're at a photoshoot or in a contest, you'll want to leave your glasses off as much as you can during that time.

If you can, try to wear anti-glare glasses with thin frames, they at least stand out less in photos.

If your eyesight is bad, wear contacts. Put the effort into doing a good job in a cosplay or don't do it at all. We have far too many awful cosplayers as it is.

Or someone who can't wear contacts, or have a hard time taking off glasses for a picture because you forget you wear them because its nice seeing in 20/20 and not in 20/800 where you can't even see where the camera is cause you can't see that far, and you resort to squinting which makes for awful pictures.

Do you wear glasses on a 24/7 basis? Because I do and not seeing fucking sucks several dicks. Yea contacts are a solution, but not everyone can afford it, especially those with astigmatism. I'm lucky enough not to have astigmatism, but I think my eyes are somewhere around the -8.0 range and not wearing some sort of vision correction for even a minute bothers me a lot.

If it doesn't matter then don't bother asking what people think and just make some costume out of trash bags and duct tape.

Jesus christ people its just glasses. If your picture is being taken just take them off. Practice doing that in front of the mirror and have your friends take practice shots of you. This way you can take your glasses off and put them somewhere fast and make sure you have a shot that looks flattering.

You shouldn't have to go out and buy contacts. Who said cosplay had to be an expensive hobby? All your doing is dressing up in a costume and having fun. It shouldn't be something where you have to flatter everyone else.

I think that most people in poor costumes tend to be more "casual" cosplayers and don't fully realize what standards are out there or the potential they could possibly have for their costumes. And I suppose it's often true as well that the compliments of people they know or the meager attention they get at a con in their costume can fool them into thinking it's better than it is.

Which is why I think a little honest input can go a long way. Even if it's something that is tough to hear.

My friend has some rare condition where she basically sees everything like it's several more meters away from her or something like that. She can't wear contacts, and without glasses she is legally blind and also looks like a tard cause she can't see shit.

I'm only slightly nearsighted, so I just wear contacts for characters who don't wear glasses. I've used my own glasses once for a cosplay but for two other cosplays I actually bought cheap pairs of reading glasses so I could have the right frames. Of course I have to wear contacts with them and look over the glass to see anything. It always struck me as ironic.

My legally blind friend can ONLY wear contacts. How bad is your eyesight? Sorry if you already said, I'm not looking through every reply.

On top of being legally blind while WEARING glasses, my eyes also do that thing where they wander off in different directions uncontrollably. The doctor said while it was possible to get contacts, not to get them because they could mess up some surgical stuff that was done when I was a baby, possibly making my vision worse.

So if I take my glasses off for photos but my eyes are also in two different directions, would people care that much...? If so, uh, I have no idea how I could fix that other than an eye-covering mask or something.

Whenever I get around to cosplaying I plan on wearing glasses and taking them off for pictures. So long as you can remember to take them off (and no one sneaks in candid photos) all the evidence will show your costume to look accurate.

I mean, if you're just doing it for fun then you shouldn't care if someone finds it inaccurate while you're walking around. If your goal was supreme accuracy you'd probably need color contacts anyway, and at that point you might want to see about spending big bucks to get them in your prescription.

If you can use contacts, that would be the best possible solution.

If you cant, just use your glasses and take them off for pictures. Try not to squint when you stop for pictures too, just remember where the camera was and pretend you see it.

Or go around blind as a bat. *That* makes for some fun pictures.

Sailor Moon in glasses would be kinda weird. O_o; It wouldn't look good. But besides, the problem is mostly in that people who are willing to wear their glasses with their costumes are usually people who don't put much effort into their cosplays. If they did they wouldn't be wearing glasses!

    You have my condolences, OP.

But now I have to ask, if you're legally blind WITH the glasses on, why do you wear them at all? I don't want to sound insensitive or anything of the sort but if that's the case wearing glasses, would not wearing them make that much of a difference? Especially in the crappy lighting that hotels tend to have.

    Just take them off.

This thread, damn. I have pretty bad astigmatism and face the same issues as some post here. Easy way to fix: Cosplay characters that wear glasses, if you're character has eye color different from your own then don some contacts and put your glasses, again taking them off. Or just ask a friend with you to remind you to take off your glasses.

I like seeing at cons too, but if you really want to see then just wear your glasses normally and remove them during photos or shoots (stick them in a purse or bag, or just hang them by a leg into the back of your pants).

Yeah, it actually does make a big difference. I can see just enough to be able to get around with glasses on, although to try and give you an idea I can't read shop signs on the other side of the street or recognize people from more than a couple feet away, or read a book more than three or so inches from my nose. While as without glasses everything is giant blobs of colour unless it's two inches away from my face. (if it's one inch it just gets blurry again)

Also my pupils don't contract - so basically, you know when you're in a pitch-black room and the light suddenly turns on and it's super bright and hurts? That's how light is to me all the time. But because of that I can see really well (comparatively) in twilight and stuff. Dim hotel lights are no problem!

Hello /jp/! This place isn't very nice.

This is OP, I'm not the person who says they have the seriously fucked eye issue. I just cannot afford contacts as a college student. I could but then I very well wouldn't have con money will I? Well shit, whats the point in cosplaying in my apartment?! I don't shit money like apparently most of you do. Maybe if you read anything you'd know my circumstances before berating me about my socioeconomic situation. I'm blind as shit, I cannot just "not wear" my glasses for the whole con, I can take them off for pictures if that is the recommendation as a few who can actually READ mentioned. GOD FORBID SOMEONE SEES ME BEING HUMAN AT A CON wearing glasses. You act like anything you'd cosplay would be walking around knee deep in weeaboo eating a hotdog like most people at a con will inevitable do.

tdgdgf; you can all blow me
    >> Pasta !!QCk6U0RZYkb 01/12/10(Tue)20:25 No.2479769
I have reading glasses and sometimes I get headaches if I don't wear them all day (which makes no fucking sense at all, but, hey, whatever), and sometimes I need to wear them around the con just to get around.

I take them off for photos or deal with the candid shots of me wearing them. I'd rather be able to see/not have a headache and have some photos I won't post on my cosplay.com than be blind all day and not enjoy the con.

One of my friends, though, doesn't wear his glasses at cons and doesn't use contacts. He has trouble seeing more than three feet in front of him and has to get super close to see things clearly, I wish he'd wear his glasses but he's more afraid of looking derpy in pictures with them.

Tl;dr: Wear your glasses, contacts are a waste of money if you're only going to be wearing them for that one weekend and never again outside of cosplay. Take them off for photos, find a place to put them BEFORE you head to the con in your costume so you're not fumbling.

    1) I buy contacts I don't go to con- that's retarded, especially when I will NEVER wear them again and go to only one con a year

    2) I don't cosplay because I can't afford contacts and a con - then I'm BAWWW apparently and don't cosplay because I'm shitscared of someone seeing me wearing my glasses when I'm walking the dealers floor? Thats retarded.

    3) Cosplay at the con with removing glasses- NO U R A TERRIBLE COSPLAYER BLAH BLAH

shove it, people who think the solution is "buy contacts" unless you are willing to send me money it is not viable
