Believe it or not I've met a lot of people from Detroit move here because the economy was better... and a lot of them wanted to go back to Detroit. Granted, not their parents but their kids. I understand missing the city and all, but, that city's bad luck all over. In my local Chinatown you can easily find a few ghettos. A lot of them, even after being here for years won't speak much English. Vietnamese, Koreans, Filippinos, etc. Philippinos are interesting in the aspect that their success is really variable. Filippino females are more likely to complete college than Japanese females according to my sociology book. That's a regurgitated line. A significant amount of funding goes into poor neighborhoods all across the country. There are more programs and initiatives to better poor areas than good ones. A large part of what defines a poor area isn't even upkeep the city can manage. It's people not taking care of their property and vandalism.
I've lived in some really shitty areas and something your idealistic view of things is overlooking is the total resistance to change and betterment the people in these areas have. I have seen so many cases of people fucking up new repairs and neighbors complaining about them. People don't want the change. The only thing I see get done w/o much problem is repaving. If people in poorer areas really wanted a better looking neighborhood, they would have one.

What I've always found fascinating is that first gen immigrants of almost any race are the nicest, most hardworking people, no matter where they come from. It's their American-born kids that always get into gangs and crime.

I think that's probably why there's higher crime stats for blacks. There's plenty of 1st gen asians and hispanics. Almost all the africans are american-born. This approach really doesn't work for whites though because they were the dominant group early on.

Well being a black person I'll add my two cents. Most black people that I have know were born with the notion that they already weren't as good as any race. From the start your told because your black your different from everyone else. Not only by family but by friends and strangers.

Now I grew up in a very nice diverse middle class neighborhood. So it was very easy for me to ignore any racial tension. I never blamed any of my misfortune on my race because I had the benefit of being around a multitude of races not just one.In fact whole friend group is a mix races, and I always call us the rainbow group.
