So /cgl/, how do you feed yourself during cons? My first one is coming up and for some reason this is the biggest question on my mind. I feel like eating out every day would be extremely expensive and probably really unhealthy, but if you're staying at a hotel then the best you get is a continental breakfast and afterwards you've gotta fend for yourself.

    How do you deal?

Make a packed lunch and discreetly take it with you.

You could go for the traditional sandwich, or you could fit in with the Japan-lovers at the con and take onigiri (Rice balls)

Just remember that bread-type carbs are key, they give you energy and fill you up quickly.
    >> Soni !!qeHmeAJM1a2 12/23/09(Wed)09:27 No.2423837
    Unhealthy and cheap

    expensive and healthy

your choice. Personally I go for expensive and healthy because my body hates unhealthy food and I always end up feeling like shit afterwards. Also, bring a cooler, buy some cold cuts from a deli, some bread and condiments, stick it in cooler, fill with hotel ice and you have lunch.

My first con, we basically starved ourselves, and we suffered for it in the end. So we made a plan for the next one.

The day before a con, hit up whatever grocery store is closest, and buy a ton of shit to make sammich's with. We made 13 for 3 people, and went through them all in 3 days. If you've got a car at the con, leave the foodstuffs in a cooler at the con. If not, pick someone to be the bitch and carry 3-4 of them in a backpack, while leaving the rest at your hotel/home fridge (we always make the person not cosplaying the food-bitch in our group.)

It's a good idea to grab juiceboxes, or to fill up water bottles, too. Some cons have water coolers around, like Sakura-Con, while others will just charge you 5$ for a bottle of pop.

If there's an embassy suites around stay there. You can comfortably fit six people in a room and they have kick ass free breakfasts. I'm talking made to order omelettes, oatmeal, fruit, etc. Then you can even grab some extra fruit and keep it in your room for later. Otherwise stock up on things like granola bars, pop tarts, and cup ramen. You can fix cup ramen and instant oatmeal with water you heat up with the hotel coffee pot.

I pretty much don't eat at cons. I end up running from photoshoot, to event, to photoshoot, to event, etc. By the time I ealize I'm hungry it's usually long past midnight when I get back to my hotel room. That's when I make a PB&J Sandwich (always gotta pack dem snackums) and scarf it down before showering and passing out.

In other words, pack food, put some in bag if you want of just eat at hotel. It's decently healthy (if you eat more than me) and super cheap.
    >> Anonymous of College Park,MD 12/23/09(Wed)12:30 No.2424043
I usually eat breakfast on the way to the convention on Friday morning or before going to the convention. At the hotel on Saturday, I go to the hotel's dinner and usually eat bacon, sausage, hash browns, whatever high-carb meals they offer.

On Saturday and Sunday usually I do eat out for lunch because the food at the hotel where the convention is at gets really expensive.

Why I usually eat out and still have money left over when I get home? I budget my money wisely.

I do what I can to have a healthy-ish snack in the mornings, a good sized lunch and usually snack on what I can get after that. If the hotel doesnt have a continental breakfast, I'll usually bring granola bars or something thats quick and easy.
Ive almost always been lucky enough to have a microwave in the room I stay in, so I bring self contained microwaveable items like ravioli or spaghetti. Ive also recently gotten a sweet little toaster that is perfect for cons, so bagles are now coming with me to all conventions.
Even if you dont have a toaster or a microwave, you can bring a loaf of bread and PB&J. This has saved me countless times.
I like to stay well fed, my body doesnt do well with little food during a stressful weekend. I prefer to avoid getting shakey and having near breakdowns by just eating something with substance every couple hours.

I do try to, but sometimes bringing a cooler to conventions isnt feasible. Also, I always eat out at least three times during a con, and I always get a steak or chicken. I like meat, its just not always easily available at cons. :<

At my first con the hotel food was EXTORTIONATE! And the only other place to buy food was at the AIRPORT we were next to. So most of my con money I'd been saving was spent on sustaining myself so I wasn't an emacicated skeleton after the weekend.

I suggest bringing some filling munchies (and no don't bring a fuckton of Skittles and think that'll be ok) just incase the food is too expensive.

I eat next to nothing ANYWAYS, but here's a few ways to do this shit:
    - Sneak in a cooler filled with breads and meats. The thing I find works best is bagels and lunchmeat, usually ham is the best. Carbohydrates and Protien for immediate energy and long term
-Drink water. If you're not gonna eat, drink. You can suffer through not eating, dehydration will kill you
-Dollar store snack foods. Stopping by the room to change clothes? Grab some chips. Have a few pretzels. Oh boy, fruit punch and cookies. Snacking keeps you satiated and filled enough to keep going
-Eat breakfast. Fuels you for the rest of the day

I use to be able to goto con and not eat for a long time but now ever since I started working I have to have a light snack with me at all times and eat 3-4 meals during con or I will become very ill

This was a real proublem at fanime because no one brought food and none of my roommates would buy any. Also I can't eat fast food or I'll get even sicker.
    >> Anonymous 12/23/09(Wed)17:24 No.2424593
Make sure you know whether or not your hotel has a minifridge. Otherwise, bring a cooler. My roommates and I made this mistake and ended up having to use the ice bucket as a cooler which sucked.

I suggest bringing protein bars. They're good to snack on and if you're hungry, they can help you make it until you can make it to some real food. If you don't bring food with you and the hotel food is ridiculously overpriced (because it always is), ask the front desk for takeout menus. They will have them. Also, every con I've been to recently has had non-convention center food vendors outside the con center selling for cheap. Take advantage of them. As for drinks, water, gatorade, vitamin water, juice. Anything that'll keep you hydrated and that has vitamins and shit in it is good. I only get soda at cons if I'm at a restaurant or the only other option is water and need something with flavor.

That being said, I always end up unintentionally losing weight at cons. Just be smart. Eat and drink when your body tells you to. You can and should only ignore it to a certain extent before you're in trouble. Especially if you're a tiny thing like a lot of us on this board are.

It's very easy to buy a $5 styrofoam cooler at any grocery store and pack cold cuts, bread, condiments if you prefer, cheese, etc. Or if you're really lazy, buy Lunchables. Pop-Tarts are also a great con food. At the very least, they will help you keep your blood sugar up so you don't pass out. And water is free, so stay hydrated. The best thing is to grab the free breakfast if your hotel offers it, or if not have a Pop-Tart for breakfast, then a sandwich for lunch in your room and treat yourself by going out to dinner. That's the best way.

Also, if you drink, it's much much much cheaper to bring your own adult beverages. Do not drink in the hotel bar.

    Depends on the convention.

    1. Eating nothing all weekend. Usually do this when theres a lot going on at the con.

    2. Cheap and unhealthy, if Im out of money.

    3. Luxury.

Sakuracon is held in the CBD of Seattle. The way the convention center is set up is that Pike Street passes between the two buildings that are connected by a skbridge. There's a Subway in between the two halves of the center. There's also a Taco Del Mar in the same building and a Cheesecake Factory on the same block.

If you expand your search radius to a block around the con, there are about ten other places to eat.

I don't really get why people can't just save up for cons, it's not like you're not spending a few hundred on travel/lodging/costumes anyway. All told, food isn't that great of an expense.

Furthermore, if you're traveling to Seattle, you should make it a point to visit Pike Place market, which is seven blocks from the con. It's not even half a mile away.

I go out with my com roommates, and we each put in about 10-15 dollars and buy snacks like goldfish crackers, teddy grahams, applesauce, and water. If we have a cooler, we'll buy a loaf of bread, deli meat and kraft cheese and keep it in a cooler. Don't make up the sandwiches before hand, they'll get soggy, and keep an eye on the cooler so your food doesn't up floating around in it.
