    Its gone from:

    "The fuck are you doing?"
"Why are you wasting your time?"
"OH, you mean you won a free trip to Japan, let us brag to all of our friends how talented you are."

My parents are a funny bunch. Only person I've ever made anything for was my mom, she dressed up as Kurenai from Naruto and I made her an outfit for a wedding. I love them :3

    'Yes,It's called cosplay."

I've had varied reactions. I usually have to tell them when a character is male, since they can't seem to tell the difference from references.

My mom called one of my costumes my "skank costume." It isn't even that bad.
    >> Anonymous 12/08/09(Tue)19:37 No.2392255
I've had different responses depending on my costumes...

"You're wasting time and money on THIS?"
"Why do you look so ugly?"
    "You look great! *takes pictures*"
    "What are you, lesbian?!?"
    ".....HAHAHAHAHAHA."

    .... :(
    >> Anonymous 12/08/09(Tue)20:05 No.2392334
My mom grudgingly accepts it, but she's proud that I'm good enough at it to place in contests.

My dad just told me not to break a rib when I bind, and always asks if I ever want help with making a prop. He learns things, and I learn them too!
    >> Anonymous 12/08/09(Tue)20:06 No.2392335
My mom's reaction upon seeing me making my cosplay: "What are you doing?"
After I explain: "Oh really? Do people really dress up? Well here, don't do it like that. You should do it this way..." and great help follows.

After the cosplay is done and I wear it: "Wow! Where is the camera? I want to show it to ______!" And then I get smiles, laughs, and/or questions of where I'm going dressed up like so.

Ugh, I get that all the time.

My parents thought it was some creepy fetish thing at first, but then once they realized how much thought and engineering goes into it, they started really supporting it, even going so far as to be like, "Hey, I found this piece of scrap plastic, maybe you can use it for one of your costumes," and suggesting I use certain skills for jobs. Pretty neat. They'll still laugh at how goofy some of the designs I pick are though.

"So you made the football team?"
    >> Anonymous 12/08/09(Tue)21:21 No.2392525
    "Did you make that? ...That's...impressive."

    4 years later:

"Stop being such a loser, you're 19, grow up. How do expect to find a man or get friends like this?" "Mom, I have a boyfriend and my friends come over all the time." "I MEAN A REAL MAN AND NORMAL FRIENDS." "...Uh huh."
    >> Anonymous 12/08/09(Tue)21:40 No.2392589
My mom thinks it's cool and has me show off parts of my costume when possible. But it's mostly, "You can afford this, right? Remember to prioritize." She likes to hear how I do things with my costumes. And she likes the friends I've made through the hobby, too.

Dad thinks I'm crazy and doesn't really bring up my costumes. Just tells people that I can sew. He doesn't really like much that isn't considered "in" or "normal."

My dad is a Trekkie so he understands cosplay and is fine with in. My mom lets me do my thing and encourages me on my creativity but I think she still thinks its odd.

"Do you really have to wear that in public? Normal people won't know it's just a costume; they'll think you're a hooker."
