Can we say one-trick ponies anyone? I didn't see the AUSA Masquerade, but if this is the best there was, damn. I mean, the skit was good, and the costumes are beautiful, but come ON, they cosplayed the same characters at NYAF the previous year. The costumes might have been different ones, but they just flew/ran around on stage and added in colorguard bullshit to some effect. It's nothing we haven't seen before.

And wtf is cosplay rocks anyway?
    >> Anonymous 11/24/09(Tue)11:41 No.2355111
You know, I've been saying this during several of the AUSA/skit threads so far - they're really wearing out the colorguard. Considering they didn't have very much range of movement, it was lackluster this time - the colorguard aspect didn't really add anything to it.

I feel like colorguard is the new ribbon-twirling in terms of stage gimmicks.
    >> Anonymous 11/24/09(Tue)11:47 No.2355125
A friend of mine judged. The judges were told they weren't allowed to compare skits to any previous skits that may have been done and to only focus on what they were given at this particular masquerade. This was the best in way of craftsmanship and performance.
    >> Anonymous 11/24/09(Tue)11:49 No.2355129
Well I guess it makes sense seeing that there really isn't much competition in the Southeast at ALL.

    Fair enough rule.
The only thing people can do is to build a better gimmick. We had singing skits in the early 90s. dance skits in the mid 90's and now flag skits.

I hadn't been to a masquerade since 2005 until recently and am just wondering what happened? I remember people used to be able to choreograph things well without the use of ribbons or lightbrights. Humor skits were actually amusing and well acted and not the rehashing of memes. When Kayne interrupted two humor skits I knew it was over.

Yeah, and they danced with the elegance of a broomstick. Gawd, I remember those. Made me embarrassed to even be in the same room with them.

Trufax: They just wanted to do something fun, as short and simple as possible, since Tiff is pretty burnt out from doing masquerades at every single friggin con. They were not expecting BiS at all.

I happen to know it was a close call between these girls and the Code Geass solo performer. But they beat him on craftsmanship. The judges made BiS the same as the Yume prelim because to separate them would make it seem like the winner of the Yume thing was BiS, and the real BiS was a runner-up. So they combined it into one to save on drama, and gave the other guy another top prize.

Now I'm going back to my hole...
    >> Anonymous 11/24/09(Tue)18:56 No.2355931
    >>2355915

That's stupid though because doesn't that make it ridiculously easy to win the Yume prelims? AUSA made it so you had to be competing in groups of 2 or less to qualify for the award, and since that award is best in show, anyone with more than 2 people are automatically excluded from winning best in show, the highest prize of a normal cosplay competition. Wasn't the Yume prelim contest basically between two pairs? Great, congrats breathlessaire and starlighthoney, you guys sucked the least out of some really fucking boring Yume-esque skits.
    >> Anonymous 11/24/09(Tue)18:58 No.2355940
    >>2355931
Protip: AUSA Masq didn't even want the Yume prelims. The coordinators couldn't have possibly cared less about it, or how it was given out. The Goddesses would have won BiS anyway, it just so happened they were also best quality for Yume, so it was combined for them.

    >> Anonymous 11/24/09(Tue)19:44 No.2356068
Not to mention that unless ACparadise hasn't loaded all the skits, there were a max of 15. Half of them were walk-ons, and only TWO groups had two people in them! Of course they would have beat out the shitty xxxholic ribbon dancing, but damn. What an easy win.

PS What was great about the Code Geass guy? He can't sew for beans, and his comedy is mediocre. Isn't he that shuichi fucker from NYAF? Why the fuck is he in the master division?

I'm bummed their giving colorguard skits a bad name, because there's some neat stuff that could be done using colorguard. But just adding it in because "ohh pretty flags to make my dancing seem less crappy " is cheap.
Ugh, if they danced like that in marching band colorguard, they'd get scored so low for performance. They looked like they didn't want to be there at all.
