    65 KB CROSSPLAY TIPS/ADVICE THREAD Round 3! Anonymous 11/21/09(Sat)09:26 No.2347397
    Recapping the last threads:

    **MAKEUP**
    Tutorials
    - http://www.lancome.co.uk/_en/_gb/applications/index.aspx?
-- Note that this video is LONG and the maker tends to ramble; feel free to skip forward a lot...

    5 'o clock shadow
    - Colortration (covers shadow/scars/tattoos, but it's expensive)
    - facial wax (too costly and long term) (too coarse to wax)
    - nair for face: http://naircare.com/products/sens_facecream.aspx (should be good for price and the amount of time that it works for)
    - reshave midday
-- Use actual razors or a REALLY good electric razor
-- Smooth Away DOES NOT WORK.

    Jawline
    - look for characters whose hair covers vertical jawline, then use makeup tricks on the chin
    - use a dark concealer on chin and jawline, then pronounce cheekbones with blush

    Eyebrows
    - use hairgel to shape eyebrows thinner
    - a good trick for passing in pictures is using a dark eyeliner or eyebrow pencil for drawing on darker, thinner eyebrows over lighter ones
    - if you're going to pluck, even a little will make a difference if you do it right:
-- start from the bottom and work upward
-- you don't have to make a dramatic eyebrow so long as you clean it up a little; pull out the stray ones

    Misc
    - Simply put, the more you pay, the better it is. Some good brands are:
    --Max Factor
    --MAC
    --Lancome
    - No sense in buying more than small amounts of whatever you're using; makeup can go bad, so if you're not gonna be using it all the time, save the money by buying less.
    - DO NOT go overboard with makeup; it's the same as for girls - less is more.
    - Makeup basics:
    -- concealer
-- foundation (liquid: TruBlend/L'Oreal True Match | powder: Lancome)
    -- lipstick
    - Makeup essentials:
    -- eyeshadow
    -- eyeliner (liquid: Lancome)
    -- mascara
    -- blush
    -- lip liner
-Make sure to get makeup remover wipes and clean off all your makeup at the end of the night

    **FIGURE**

    Stuffing materials
    - jelly water holders (check gardening departments)
    - large balloons w/ water (check flower/gift shops)

    Tucking
    1. pull scrote back between your legs, balls pop up in there easier if they have nowhere else to go.
    2. if it's just casual, then you wont need tape, sufficiently well-fitting panties work fine to hold it all in place. without tape, thongs are a no-no as your scrote will dangle out the sides.
    3. taping is an optional step. i've actually not tried it until now and it doesnt seem to work without slathering your scrote in sticky tape.

    Arms
    - boys obviously have different arms/shoulders than girls. Go for long sleeve if you can, or maybe add some arm warmers to the costume as "custom touches"

    Undergarments
    - shop far from home where nobody would know you or see you again, or shop online; the general idea is that the actual items you shopped for won't show up on your CC bill so much as where you shopped and an amount (sears*****$20)
    - For panties, briefs panties are going to be best for tucking and will be comfortable. Most everything else won't hold you as well.
-- Possibly spandex shorts as an alternative

    Pantyhose
    - if you legs are good enough, not using them may add to the illusion
    - if you're not sure, use them
    - if you KNOW your legs won't pass (too muscular, scars, etc), use skintone dance tights
    - In terms of quality, the more you pay, the better you can expect them to be. Stay away from Leggs Everydays.
    - If you want to be super careful, use cotton gloves to put them on so that you don't get snags or runs.
    >> Anonymous 11/21/09(Sat)09:27 No.2347400
    **MISC**

    Mannerisms
    - knees together/cross legs when sitting
    - stand up straight with shoulders back; it'll make your shoulder span look narrower
    - walk one foot in front of the other (tightrope walking)
    - good posture - Start balancing that book on the head
    - pay attention to how you hold your arms/hands; keep your arms close to your sides.

    Voice
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbaj4tIX1kw
    - not all girls have super high-pitch voices (think Jessica Rabbit)
    - if you REALLY think that you can't do it, just try not to talk much (act shy)

    Shaving
    - If you think people might see it, shave it. It'll look better, and it's just hair; it'll grow back after the con.
    - Exfoliate before shaving; use hot water and a loofa/washcloth/whatever you have with soap, or some sort of exfoliating wash. This will help prevent razor burn.
    - In order of best to worst, shave gel, shave foam, liquid soap, bar soap.
    - The first time is gonna take a long time, so don't try to rush it.
    - Try not to take more than one pass with the razor to prevent irritating the skin.
    - Make sure the razor stays clean - use alcohol on a blade before you reuse it, and rinse it after every pass or so.
    - wash the area after shaving
    - use a moisturizer after your shower to prevent dry skin and ingrown hairs

    Other
    - use feminine body wash, shampoo, perfume, and paint your nails if they're gonna show
    - Try to find a men's deoderant that doesn't have a smell, since that'll be better than trying to use a women's deoderant. Your bodywash/shampoo/perfume will take care of the rest.

Go ahead and post any pics you have of people doing it right, or pics of the character you're considering crossplaying as so that people might be able to give more specific suggestions.

Here's the three that I'm looking at. I've already started on Dawn, actually.
    >> Anonymous 11/21/09(Sat)09:35 No.2347405
About corsets - definitely worth it because if worn right they are comfortable. Timelesstrends have rather inexpensive corsets and are durable and worth the money quality wise. The best in this case would be a waist-training corset which can be worn regularly under clothes.

I'll just go ahead and repost this, too, since it popped up in the last two threads.

That's it, then. Feel free to add in whatever you want, and if you're gonna bump the thread, make sure you're at least posting something relevant - at least a good pic or something.

I'll be bookmarking the thread and watching for more stuff to add to the main post.

You can get a cheap plastic boned piece of crap for 20$ on ebay. 75$ for a steel boned corset is more than cheap.

well yeah, but if it's only supposed to last for 2-3 weekends out of the year, do you NEED a steel boned one? What's the down side of plastic boning?
    >> Anonymous 11/21/09(Sat)13:14 No.2347624
    >>2347448
You can bend the boning in a few days depending on how careful you are with it. And plastic boned corsets don't do shit for waistline forming. Saying this out of experience. If you know that you won't be using it anymore - sell it.

    Re: make-up

Avoid nair for the face. It can be sensitizing or irritating. Go for threading. It's longer lasting than Nair (hair grows back in 2-5 weeks), but the results are great. It'll get rid of finer hairs, even peach fuzz, that waxing might miss, and it's cheaper and gentler on the skin.

Price does *NOT* equal quality. Who are the dumb broads on this board saying this? If you won't be using the make-up continuously after cosplay, just buy some samples from places like Fyrinnae (eyeshadows = MAC in color, but are cheaper and less toxic; samples are ~$1.75 and are good for at least 10 applications) or EG Minerals (awesome foundation in mineral powder, pressed, and cream forms.) If you like brand names, highly recommending Shu Uemura's face primer and Make-up Forever's HD microfinishing powder.

Also, would recommend shaving instead of plucking eyebrows. Didn't see the other threads, so maybe someone already gave advice on that. If not, read a tutorial on doing it right. Eyebrows make a huge difference.

Some matte, nude lipstick and a bit of eyeliner on the lower lashline goes a long way.
    >> Anonymous 11/22/09(Sun)01:54 No.2349196
    >>2349170

No, price doesn't equal quality, but that doesn't mean that all expensive stuff is crap.

Also, I seriously don't recommend shaving instead of plucking your eyebrows. Much harder to control - I've shaved off part of an eyebrow that way. Pluck, wax, or get a pro to do it.

    >>2349196
Do not recall saying all expensive stuff is crap? If that was so, why would I have recommended Shu Uemura and Make-Up Forever?

Shaving brows is not that hard if you take your time. It's easier than waxing them imo. If anon is worried about messing up, he could always use a brow template.

    >>2349170
You were correct about the threading bit. Except you should've included the eyebrows on the list to thread.
Works much better than plucking, last longer than shaving. Although one should go to a place that knows how to do it since it's a pain in the ass to do it on oneself.

There ARE drugs to supress erections.

Or just train yourself not to react to hot/sexy stuff when you choose to.

Or get a gaff, they're incredibly helpful since it just pushes your boner round the back rather than sticking out.

I really have to say that I'm amazed with the number of people that have shown interest in this and have pitched in some really useful information. Though I do feel like I should ask at this point:

Would you like to see this thread continue to get reduxed for a little while longer, or would a 4th thread seem like overkill?

As I said before, I've never really been to /cgl/ a whole lot before this, so I don't know what the taboos are here for continuation threads, though I have yet to see anyone actually be mad about it... There was also the suggestion of some F to M tips.

So how about it? Another round, and maybe even another thread for F to M (or maybe just adding that in as a section on this if it doesn't get a lot of feed-back; IMO it doesn't seem like there's much involved with that other than binding, but I could be entirely wrong)?

Anyone got any tips for using makeup to hide lines of muscles? I know there are some ways of doing makeup on arms or legs to make them look more feminine.

Problem is I can pass, well I think at least. But I'm pretty muscular/toned. I want to do bridget and he's sleeveless. It's either learn the techniques with makeup or make it a kind of a joke costume. Bridget with a girly face but muscles. Not XBOXHUGE but big enough/defined enough to notice for sure.

I'm in the same position with Dawn >>2347404

I'm solving it with making some arm warmers to match the costume. Yeah, it's not part of the original costume, but it'll hide the problem.

For you, I suggest detached sleeves that match the costume if you don't mind altering the design of the costume some, or get a large and REALLY smooshy teddy bear that your arms would kinda sink into if you hugged it while posing for pictures.

Hey, I'm not into crossplay personally, but I did want to ask a question about mail hair removal, because I need to start getting rid of my body hair for health reasons. Is Naire good for getting rid of body hair, or am I gonna have to get to shaving everything manually? How does one reach places to shave that aren't on your face?

Any advice that you might wanna give would be lovely. Go for it, traps!
    >> Anonymous 11/23/09(Mon)02:38 No.2351579
    >>2351560
Nair is MEANT for body hair; normal nair tells you right on the bottle not to use it on the face or other 'sensitive" areas. There are types of nair and other hair removers for the face, and there are brands that are meant for men's thicker hair, but normal Nair will work, too.

as for shaving places other than your face, a razor is still a razor. I've been told that a women's razor is better for larger, broader surfaces like legs, while a man's razor is better for more contoured surfaces like around a chin and jawbone. It's not a huge difference, so if you're not having a seizure, you should be good for using a men's blade elsewhere than the face.

    >>2351212
Well, that's kinda off topic, but I would assume it wouldn't be any differen't than any other foamboard crafting. use multiple layers if it's not gonna be thick enough for the body, and I would really consider using wood for the neck. The head could be either or, really, though foamboard would probably be easier to shape. Use a light wood, too, so that it doesn't overtax the body and break if you're gonna put a shoulder strap on it, too; balsa is cheap and easy to work with, and really lightweight.

    >>2351481
yeah, it's probably best to do two seperate threads, but I don't know if there's enough interest in F to M to keep it active.

    >>2349115
I'd say your best chance is to google the area you're looking to tone and excercises for it, but just keep in mind that toning is probably going to have a much faster result on you other than a woman, showing more muscle tone. I'd honestly say that if you don't NEED it, don't bother.

Works just fine for me. I think if you use it on stubble, it doesn't work. I use it on my arms because arm hair is my pet peeve, but I always let it grow in more before I Smooth Away. Makes the skin super soft, too.

from what I read on several sites, the responses were all ranging from "simply doesn't work" to "leaves skin more sensitive than shaving". Also a lot of complaints about rashes and razor burn.

I dunno, I guess I could give it a shot, but I also found some epil-stop at the dollar store, and I feel like being stupid... Worst it can do is give me a horrible chemical burn, right?

how about hair straightening for people that already have long hair but it's curly and you don't want that, not nescarily if it will work or not, but tips, maybe type of straighteners are the best and how to not mess it up... not sure if I will get any help from here but worth a try

I use a chii straightener, and it's expensive but I think it's worth every penny. It gets waaayyy hot though, I've occasionally burnt myself straightening my hair. Shit stings.
As for tips, go in layers, and in those layers go in sections. It'll go by faster and easier in smaller pieces, and makes it a little more organized.
Even though straightening kills your hair like woah. I've got split ends like crazy.
