My
family's always been active in animal rescue, so we always had around 3
dogs in my house. I always worked with them to help dogs acclimate to
having owners that feed them and don't beat the shit out of them. it's
absolutely heartbreaking when you go to pet a dog and they flinch and
whine. Upsets me so. damn. much.
We had one dog, mandy. She was
a little maltese, malnourished and had burns on her right side, so fur
wouldn't grow in. She was so tiny that we had to watch out hawks
wouldn't grab her when we played out back. The vet didn't give her
long, only about 6 months. We just wanted her to be comfortable when
she passed.
she was affectionate and loving to everyone, but she
took a special liking to me. She slept in my bed, followed me around
when I was home, and always ran out to greet me when I came home from
school.
After work and homework, I would rush to my room to
play Phantasy Star Online on my dreamcast. Mandy would always huddle up
to the side of the machine, and it took me forever to figure out why.
Her
sides were always cold because of the burn scars. She couldn't grow fur
there, so she'd huddle up next to my dreamcast and warm herself up with
the air fans. I'd sneak her some of my late night snacks, (pretzels,
part of a turkey sandwich; stuff like that) and she'd lay next to the
dreamcast until it was time for bed.
6 months came and went, Mandy was stronger than ever.
I
played other games, and whenever I beat a boss, or polished off a game,
mandy would rush over, sit in my lap and wag her tail. it felt like she
was celebrating with me. Together we beat PSO, Shadowman, skies of
arcaida, grandia 2, and plenty more.
She passed away 3 years
later from old age. I miss her so much, and can't help but think of her
when I hear the dreamcast boot up noise, or the pioneer 2 music from
Phantasy star online. |
