Has /cgl/ ever had 'post-con sicknesses'? Things like colds, flus or strep throat? Swine flu has recently been a big break-out during conventions as well.

A while ago, a friend of mine showed me the following video and I realized why I was getting sick.

    http://www.bestviral.com/video/6629/dont_ever_drink_from_hotel_glasses

What are your thoughts, /cgl/? Have you ever used hotel glasses? Have you ever gotten sick after being a convention?
    >> Anonymous 11/04/09(Wed)22:45 No.2300998
Never been sick. Always drank out of my own bottled water.
    >> FC !LUoN15AFLU 11/04/09(Wed)22:48 No.2301017
I never drink from glasses of any kind. But I get sick at every convention I go to. I figure it's a combination of my shit immune system, and being enclosed in close-quarters with hundreds/thousands of people that have no concept of hygiene and not covering their mouth when they cough.
    >> Penguin Penny !CwVY/8O3DQ 11/04/09(Wed)22:49 No.2301022
I always get sick after cons. Just the stress and lack of sleep and the being around hygienically challenged people.
Right now, recovering from Youma has gone a lot better than any other con. Ive just got slight sniffles and my voice for some reason isnt all there.
    >> Anonymous 11/04/09(Wed)23:01 No.2301065
Two of my friends got Swine Flu the day after a con. They stayed home from school for the whole week. We think it's from the game consoles there, since I didn't get sick at all. They played for about an hour while I was in the costume contest.
It sucks because they didn't come to watch and get at least one picture of me on my own camera.
    >> Anonymous 11/04/09(Wed)23:46 No.2301174
After my first con, I got a really violent flu, with a high fever, and some hallucinations. I was sick for about 2 weeks. It was during winter, so that could be it. I was only 12 at the time.
    >> saku !K5blzrzugU 11/04/09(Wed)23:50 No.2301185
I was bed-ridden for a week after Otakon this year. I 've never had to call out of work before, and I still have no idea what made me sick... I did't do anything out of the ordinary. I blame Maryland :|

Other than that, I mean like the first two cons I went to I got the sniffles afterwards just because I wasn't used to cons, but I haven't gotten sick since. Heck there were cases of h1n1 at PAX and I was fine, even after working one of the booths everyday
    >> Jessie//AnimeFagAngel 11/04/09(Wed)23:52 No.2301189
I used to get sick after every con. Now I never get sick post-con.

The only thing I drink from hotel glasses is alcohol, so I'm safe in that regard since germs aren't spread through alcohol.
    >> Anonymous 11/05/09(Thu)01:06 No.2301387
I have con plague right now, from oni-con.
Stuffy nose and sore throat since Monday.

I've used hotel glasses all the time...but maybe not so much anymore. Though, hotel rooms in general are probably pretty rank.
    >> Anonymous 11/05/09(Thu)01:25 No.2301449
After a small con about 2 weeks ago, I ended up getting strep-throat and losing my voice, and one of my good friends got h1n1. I don't think it's a coincidence. I don't know about you guys, but I think the next con I go to... I just might bring a bottle of purel. >>; Better safe than sorry, correct?

    uuuuugh that is disgusting.

I usually stay at an Embassy Suites when I go to Acen, and I sometimes use their drinking glasses. Thank God I have never gotten sick from them.

From now on, I am taking my own plastic cups with me to conventions.

also, something that I have realized recently is just how unsanitary the pitchers of ice water are that they have set out for guests at the Hyatt during Acen. Anyone can walk up and put something into them, or cough into them.

Usually I'm fine but a friend and I both ended up with a nasty cold after NYAF this past September.

We only drink bottle water at cons. Even in the hotel room.

There's only been one time that I've gotten sick after a con, and it was at Jacon 2008. It was a shitty con that wouldn't end.

Lotsa people got sick after DragonCon.

My guy got it and I got it from him. Runny nose like a faucet and aches. Took 3 days to recover from it.
I compared notes with friends and a few of them had the same thing.

that is why I plan my cosplays accordingly. I am prone to overheating easily, so I usually have to avoid any characters who have elaborate outfits made with heavy materials (during the warmer months at least)

I got pretty sick after Mikomicon this year.. Though I kinda doubt it was -from- the con.
A LOT of people who attended Fuyu/FireCon two weeks ago, got really damn sick. I just felt ill for a day or two and then I was fine again. Thank god.

I started to attend cons in '01. This is the first year I've EVER gotten con plague so easily.

Got bronchitis after Sakura Con. Got a flu that kicked my ass after Fanime. Have pneumonia and just got back from Yaoi Con. Motherfucker.

i've had con sickness a couple times. Got a small cold post Mikomicon this year, and after ALA I got a very nasty case of it.

After Katsucon last year i had a fever of 104

sickness came on Sunday mid morning and stayed for a few days.

    I felt horrible.
Blame the kids who came from GMU. the sickness was spreading thrugh their dorms and they brought it to the con.
    >> Anonymous 11/05/09(Thu)09:59 No.2302194
I've started to think of it as inevitable that I'll come back from a con with some kind of illness. It's a funny thing though - how severe the illness is depends on what type of con it is. Fan-run cons are always far milder than Expos and the like, and the worst I've ever had was a really nasty case of tonsillitis after the October London Expo last year. It took two courses of antibiotics to shift that. By contrast, I think I had a couple of days of sniffling after Ayacon and that was it.
    >> Anonymous 11/05/09(Thu)13:04 No.2302523

Holy flippin' shit! I showed this to my mother. Thank you anon. No more drinking from glasses that aren't my own.

My sister, cousin and I all got horribly sick after our first Acen in '06. Fevers etc. Not until recently have I not become sick at a convention. Now that I'm older i'm not trying to do everything without any rest/food/water. I also use airborne. I highly suggest con-goers use airborne and carry anti-bacterial gel with them to help prevent sickness.
    >> Anonymous 11/05/09(Thu)13:35 No.2302605

No kidding. Me and my friends always used the cups in hotel rooms. x_x Grossss.

I've only been sick once at a con. Just got a sore throat that started slowly Friday night, and got worse the rest of the weekend. I probably compromised my immune system from staying up three days in a row trying to finish my costume.
    >> Anonymous 11/05/09(Thu)13:40 No.2302622
I haven't ever gotten sick after a con, but I only go to local cons so I don't really spend as much time at the con.

When you spend a lot of time in a confined space with a large number of people, getting sick is pretty inevitable. It's just like how whenever you fly on a plane if just one person is sick, chances are everyone on the flight is going to get it.
    >> Anonymous 11/05/09(Thu)13:44 No.2302633
Seasoned con goers know not to use the hotel glasses (bring disposables), or to wash them with really hot water and soap before use. It takes like, what, five minutes, tops?

I used to get sick after every convention I went to, flu, colds, viruses, food poisoning, whatever. If you follow the 6/2/1 ratio every day (6 hours sleep, 2 actual meals, 1 shower per day), wash your hands a lot (especially before eating anything or touching your face), use antibacterial hand sanitizer when you can't wash your hands, take your vitamins and not eat/drink from communal food/water, you can usually avoid most strains of the con crud. Since I started doing the above mentioned things at every con, I rarely get sick anymore. You just have to take care of yourself and not try to survive on alcohol, two boxes of Pocky and two hours of sleep in three days.

Since most people go to cons stressed out before they even get there, they're super susceptible to illness. Add in the fact that you have people coming from all over the country bringing germs from other areas, many of them flying (airplanes are basically flying germ cans, the air is practically all recycled germs), it makes for a crazy virus soup that just simmers through the whole weekend of the con.

Oh my god.. That is absolutely horrific! Thanks for sharing OP!

I used to use the glasses at the Hotels.. Never got sick though. Guess I'm one of the lucky ones? I've been going to Anime North for the last six years, haven't picked up anything from any of the cons.
    >> R.D. !!qFhBIHR1ap8 11/05/09(Thu)15:54 No.2303015
I sometimes catch a cold at conventions and am overly sleep-deprived.

Haha speaking of hotel glasses.... Some years ago I spent my holidays in southern France.
When I came back, my stomach suddenly started to cramp like all day long and really bad and I couldn't eat or sleep... well, somehow I managed to get infected with bacteria that were normally known to be extirpated in whole Europe.
    Shit was definitely NOT cash.

Never drink something in France that doesn't contain alcohol.
