How important is the ability to act in character (i.e. doing their voice, emulating their personality etc.) for a cosplayer? Can it save a rather lackluster and make it awesome or at least make you overlook a cosplay's glaring faults. Of course when I talk about acting in character I'm refering to individuals who know when to stop and do not come across as LARPers.

Pic related, an example of a costume where the cosplayer doesn't look exactly like the character but god damn do I think his cosplay is epic.

I think it's a good feature and it does make up for costume faults or other things that may detract a person from a cosplay. a little effort goes a long way

For me seeing a person in character doesn't matter at all when you converse with them. Maybe at a shoot, panel, masquarade, or other time when there is a preformance to be seen it matters but other than that if they act like them all day without letting me know they're an actual person with an actual personality it gets annoying.

both of these are so true. Done right it is awesome, it can make up for some faults in the costume or it can make a good costume better, it will also cause you to be pretty memorable. Done too much though, or as you mentioned just going to the point of LARPing then it gets old quick and people who don't know the character might not get the jokes and find it annoying ... so it's important to pick your audience.

I personally do it at cons. Really only because my character is known for his mannerisms. It really isn't LARP'ing, I just think as long as I have fun doing it, and people like it, it's ok :D. And yes, it can make people turn a blind-eye to some of your costume's flaws and such.

If you're an amazing showman you can make up for a lot of flaws.

But you have to be good at it. Screw up the acting and it will make you look like a douche almost regardless of your costume's quality.
