I've been out of the convention scene for about 4 years now.

When I was still going to cons, the major animes being cosplayed were; Bleach, Naruto, Full Metal Alchemist, and Inuyasha. Death Note was just undergoing an explosion of poorly done cosplays.

The major games being cosplayed were; KINGDOM HEARTS, Kingdom Hearts, kingdom hearts, and final fantasy.

I've recently wanted to attend conventions again as well as find out what animes/games I would could expect to find cosplays of.

As I browse the forums of cons I frequent (A-Kon, Oni-con), the ONLY threads I can find are those for the same crap that was around when I left...only this time, there is much less obscure or other titles thrown in the mix.

Question: If I attend a convention, am I no longer going to have a sense of "Wow!" being that the only thing I can expect to find is the same old same old; Naruto, Bleach, Kingdom Hearts (all of which are shitty cosplays involving a long black coat...kinda like an overglorified mall goth trench coat).

Also, what I noticed is that the community seems kinda..dead. C.c only has 1 page of content on the forums for each convention, compared to the +30 in the past.
The guests seem extremely lackluster or exactly the same as before.

Is it just me, or is the convention/anime scene become stagnant/dead?

The cosplay scene has become stagnant, with the influence of cos.com. There are so many kids and people who are just awful nowadays. It's sad.

It's the Katsu masquerade! I'm going to guess 2007?
Unfortunately all that cosplay you mentioned is still very popular to cosplay. It's sad, you haven't missed much since 2004.

The only difference from what you described is FMA is little less popular and InuYasha is a lot less popular.

No lies, there's a LOT of Bleach, Naruto, KH, and Death Note, and now we're seeing tons of Hetalia and Code Geass too. Still a lot of Haruhi and Lucky Star, but they seem to be decreasing a tiny bit. Lots of Vocaloid too.

It's not like there's nothing obscure or unusual out there, it's there, it's just far smaller in number. It makes it that much more special when you spot them.

To answer your question, you won't be wow-ed if you expect to see a big variety in cosplay or if you're only really going to see good cosplayers. Both variety and quality are hard to find, but they aren't non-existent.
