    44 KB Katsucon 16 Progress thread. Anonymous of College Park,MD 10/22/09(Thu)17:47 No.2264722
He's a bit of a status update, since the Katuscon 15 (aka CrowdedCon) the situation has got a lot better. Until I found out about the Great exodus of the con staff since the resignation of the Con Chair of 2009, which I call the the Great Katuscon Staff Exodus.

Wondering around Myspace to try to fit in and not let my profile go to rot, I found out that the ENTIRE video game staff has quit since july of this year. Also the AMV and Larp staff has quit as well.

The main reason: The new heads of Katsucon are being dumb. The fact that the registration page has not been updated to allow attendees to register online is proves that since the resignation, my confidence of the convention next is getting lower by the month.

Will this convention survive due to the great exodus, or will it become a train wreck?

Picture related to visualize the possible inevitability.

Well if you are talking about Katsucon chances are a lot of people go to CP, seeing as it's the biggest college in the area?

This shit pisses me off. Katsu used to be my favorite con but each year it has been getting worse and worse. Last year was horrible. Probably the worst con I've been to yet. If it wasn't for my friends and cosplaying, I would have said fuck it and gone into DC to do shit. Luckily, they are having it in the Gaylord so crowding wont be an issue at all BUT if the whole con chair don't get their shit together, it's going to be just as bad if not worse than this past year. Fucking idiots.

    Results of the Corey Experiment

Well, Corey, I hope that amid all the wailing and gnashing of teeth, you use this opportunity to think about what you've LEARNED over the last four years. You HAVE learned something, haven't you? I mean, if you didn't LEARN anything, then this whole four-year experiment of ours has been (almost) a complete waste of time! All good scientists know that there's no point in running rats through a maze if the stupid little fuckers don't figure out the pattern eventually.

In case you couldn't figure it out (and we're sure you missed SOME of these answers), here's what you should have learned:

    1. The rest of the convention staff did not, does not, and never would respect you. I mean, why would they? How hard can it possibly be to herd around a bunch of whiny, hyper twenty-somethings? HINT: your first clue about their disrespect of you should have been when they booted you into a loading dock to use for your green room. Nobody worthy of respect would have put up with that.

    2. The cosplayers don't respect you, either. They will always flatter and fawn over whoever's in charge. They've already forgotten you, and are trying to figure out whose ass to kiss next for special favors. (This includes judging.) Remember, nobody ever got disappointed by under-estimating the gratitude of a fandom.

    3. Never piss off the tech crew. Why? Because it's really hard to prove the difference between incompetence, simple misfortune, and subtle sabotage.
    >> Anonymous 10/22/09(Thu)20:18 No.2265345
    >>2265339

    4. It's really dumb to make your staffers do all the work while you take all the credit. That tends to make them, oh, I don't know, want to run off and run their own hall costume department with their girlfriend or something. You should have learned that running a department is HARD WORK, but in order for that happen, you would have had to do some.

    5. Directors of contests should not be seen OR heard during the event. See, that distracts from your performance of actual WORK. (See #4 again.)

    6. Ridiculous ego and overreaching ambition are no substitute for actual talent. (Look up "unwarranted self-importance" on encyclopediadramatica.com if you need to look in a mirror here.)

    7. Anyone who can get you hired, can get you fired. (Sometimes even people who don't "work" there any more...)

And finally, most importantly, and most likely to go right over your head:

    8. The rest of the world (staffers, judges, tech, security, events manager, etc.) is not the problem; YOU ARE. You won't believe us, but it's true. After all, we ran 10 of the first 11 KatsuCon cosplays; you ran just 4. If we lasted 2-1/2 times as long as you did, that must mean that you sucked at the job 2-1/2 times as hard as we did! Tough cheese; eat it. (And welcome to the ranks of us has-beens. ONE OF US, ONE OF US!)

And one last lesson, from a master educator, for Keith, Colette, that most ungrateful of students, Pocky, and all those lovely people who were so happy to see us go? As bad as some of you thought we were, it could always have been much worse. Indeed, for the last four years, we hope we've taught you just EXACTLY how bad it could be. And it can be - will be - that bad (or worse!) again if you don't treat Danny a hell of a lot better than you treated us.

We'll always be watching. Don't fuck it up.
    >> Anonymous 10/22/09(Thu)20:21 No.2265366
Masquerade 2009 was fucked up. Tech Crew shit it up on purpose, except for the skits they actually liked that they saw during rehearsal. If you had no sound in the green room while you were performing your skit, that means you fucking sucked

Given what Tigercon was - a one-day convention held on a college campus in only its second year, run by a core group of about 5 people on a tiny-ass budget - it was pretty good, and I had fun.

    That aside.
I plan on going to Katsucon this year because I love the National Harbor area and I plan on getting amazing photos all over the place.

I had an AWESOME time at KatsuCon last year, but then again I skipped the masquerade/ball/major events and only really attended the panels that my friends were running. Otherwise, I was there to cosplay, party, and have AWESOME thai food nearby.

I can't wait for this year. It's going to be the only year we get at a hotel this nice (I mean, come on, this -is- an anime convention -- people are bound to fuck it up for the rest of us that actually bother to tip and thank hotel staff) so I'm enjoying it to it's fullest.

This, of course, means that a good chunk of my con will be spent at the various bars/pool/parties/social gatherings at the con. It's gon' be naaiiiiiice.

    >I can't wait for this year. It's going to be the only year we get at a hotel this nice

Katsucon entertainment has actually signed a three year contract with the hotel. So if the convention becomes an trainwreck, at least you'll enjoy the hotel.
    >> Anonymous 10/22/09(Thu)23:22 No.2265885
    >>2265773
Can that contract be canceled if the con is kicked out and never welcomed back?
    >> Anonymous 10/22/09(Thu)23:24 No.2265888
    >>2265773

Hotels have broken contract before if con-goers treat the place like shit, that's what happened this past year with Katsu, they were booted from the prior hotel. People considered that hotel nice, that's nothing compared to the Gaylord. con goers are going to fuck that place up, but it should be nice for this whole ONE year

Went to Katsu for my first and last time in 2009. What went wrong for me? Well I pre-reged...my friend didn't. He got through the line in under 30 minutes. I waited for over an hour. I only wanted 3 things, dealers, cosplay, karaoke. Dealers was fine. Karaoke was started very late because they were waiting on a table to arrive (they really could have gotten it started without the table). The cosplay was dragging on so long I walked out in the middle. A total waste of a weekend, badge money, and hotel money.

Higher up power struggle that has nothing to actually do with the masquerade or the masquerade staff in particular. Most of the people you may know or have heard of are merely pawns in a larger game. The game is a bunch of old farts who used to be somebodies back when two people watched anime and cons were held in somebody's garage. They're old and can't let go, so they try to fuck up the people who still care about the hobby.
