What is it about 2009 that has honestly brought us some of the greatest masquerade skits in the history of skits? I have seen more amazing skits in this year than I have in the 10+ years of conventions total.

Pic related, one of the many great skits of 2009

Could it have something to do with the WCS becoming more popular? When the preliminaries were first held at NYAF in 07, no one knew what was going on and brought out their usual crap. Then all of the sudden there are cosplay events everywhere, Team USA is being promoted like nothing else, and everyone stepped up their game. General knowledge about cosplay just increased, and the people with great skit ideas grew some balls and put their plans into action. '09 has been amazing, and I hope the quality of skits continues to improve in the future.

I think it has something to do with new groups of cosplayers stepping up and coming up with skits. The "usual" groups have been getting the shaft at cons lately because they keep bringing the same tired shit (Agents, Ambrosia&Jersey co, Cirque du Cosplay, etc)

I welcome the newer skit groups, specifically some of the people who stepped up at Katsu, which is the single best masq I've ever been to

tl;dr: Agents have this guy in their group, Robbie, who's a total douche and talks shit to everyone else in every masquerade they've ever been in, he claims he's won ton of awards with them when he's usually just a stagehand, and he bitched incessantly after Katsucon because they lost Best in Show to "a bunch of nobodies."
Ambrosia is just a drama queen of epic proportions and also threw a shitfit post-Katsucon.

I don't expect professional grade, but if it's a dancing skit, I do expect the dancer to at least be on beat.
If it's a singing skit, I expect the singers to at least hit the notes properly. I'm not asking for perfection, I'm just asking for a practiced performance.

And honestly, I'd be a lot more forgiving if participants were less whiny when they lost.

One of the things I like best about the new groups of performers showing up at east coast cons is they don't have the overinflated egos some of the other groups do like Agents, Ambrosia, Cupcake cosplay, etc. The newer groups, maybe they haven't had enough experience to think they're hot shit, but they're legit there for the fun time and applaud for everyone who competes.

The best things that happened to masquerade skits:

    1. Group size limits
    2. Time limits
    3. No live microphone for contestants

I sat through way too many shitty skits with like 15 people wandering on and off stage sharing a microphone trying to do a skit for 5 minutes or more and failing HORRIBLY.

Who is even entering the Yume Cup?

A lot of people, apparently. Since NYAF dumped WCS for a more "legit" contest with a better prize, I'm not surprised.

Hopefully a lot of people will be kicking it up a notch and bringing out the big guns, so to speak, since the prize is so significant.

there was a group at akon a couple years ago that had a massive backdrop that I thought was a painted canvas. I asked later and it turns out it was a sheet, so yeah I agree, you can do it without it looking bad

How big of a stage background can you bring? And do they allow projected imagery?
    >> Anonymous 08/16/09(Sun)05:04 No.2051640

Depends on the con. The only con I know that dose projected imagery is Katsucon. Most cons only allow backdrops that have very quick and easy setup, of at all.

I'm entering with a friend. We're going all out. Bought the best quality fabrics and we're doing something that is hopefully nostalgic and well loved by many people. We were still planning to do it even when it was WCS, but our skit was pretentious bullshit since that's what wins there. Now that it's not WCS, we changed it to a cute and funny skit with the same characters.

Dude you couldn't win BIS cause your group didn't show up for craftmanship judging, and you bought your costume and it was the only decent thing costume wise in your group. You got the best award you qualifyed for.
