Somewhere inside Wired's "New Rules" issue is this little tip.

    Is Wired spot-on?
    >> Anonymous 08/06/09(Thu)10:32 No.2020692
Yeah, 60 million people cramming into the bathrooms to all get changed and do shit to their hair and attach big fucking wings, yeah that's a good idea, instead of doing it in the leisure and space of your hotel room.
    >> Anonymous of College Park,MD 08/06/09(Thu)10:53 No.2020722
    Which page, OP?

which can also be just as cramped with 9 roommates. :D

but naw, if your cosplay is something simple and small, you can change @ con. I did that with ryu many times and i also did it with Sion and Ace Last year at AX. Simple shit,

but anything super big or time consuming Save most to all of it for a hotel room
    >> Anonymous 08/06/09(Thu)11:03 No.2020739
If i paid for a plane ticket, hotel room, registration, etc. I'll change wherever I feel like it, thank you very much.

Seems to me that rule has more to do with keeping your nerd flag hidden from co-workers or by-standers. Someone's trying to make 'nerd' an OK thing to be for everyone, but they firmly believe in baby-steps.

If you don't care about scaring the straights, let it all hang out. Whomever wrote that probably didn't realize that many con-goers stay in hotels directly linked to the convention center, if they can.

If you're totally comfortable alienating yourself from people, rock on. I, for one, can't find enough similarly strange people where I live that I can get away with being any stranger than I am now.
    >> Anonymous 08/06/09(Thu)11:26 No.2020785
I've put mine on at home a couple of times since I usually take public transportation to go to cons and it's easier than carrying the costume. Plus there's usually a lot of other con-goers on my route when it's con-time too.
    >> AGiantWASDF !bc3BesElGM 08/06/09(Thu)11:26 No.2020786
Since I am such a cheap squandering motherfucker, I spend as few nights at the hotel as possible. so that means either traveling in costume, or changing at the con. Changing at the con never works for me, and I usually seriously mess something up, or don't have stuff that I easily have at home (towels, shower, etc.)

So I just travel on the train in costume, and if I'm worried somebody's going to give me crap about it, I'll just wear a coat over it. Problem sovled.
    >> Anonymous 08/06/09(Thu)11:50 No.2020829
Anime North's events are split between a convention center and the hotel across the street - a pretty major intersection. In that case, there's really no helping it unless you want to dress, undress, re-dress...
    >> Anonymous 08/06/09(Thu)11:56 No.2020846
I have enough shit to carry without lugging around my normal clothes all day.

If I'm not staying at a con, I'm getting ready at home and commuting to whatever con via Metro. I will be cosplaying to the con, and frankly, I don't care what people think en route. Besides, in a perverse twist, people in Washington are more genial when I'm in cosplay than my normal dress. They inquire about the cosplay and maybe even want a picture. In my normal dress, they just stare on the street like I'm some mythical beast in a business suit.

Also, it's hilarious to hear, "Holy shit; I'm sitting in front of X character" when people let their own inner geek slip out somewhere on my way to the con.

    (Pic not me.)

    that pic is awesome

I already go on costume without the biggers props, when its for the bigger events I take it there with a change of clothes I can easily slip on and off.

that means bringing the whole make up case, hangers, sewing kit, hot glue gun, and w/e I can think up at the spot.

AND YOU TEND TO MAKE FRIENDS EASIER WHEN YOU REALIZE YOU FORGOT YOUR SHIT.

Theres only so many costumes that can be shoved into bags and carried around. I do my best to get rooms at the con hotel or quite close so that I don't have to drive or take public transport to the con in costume.
I also plan ahead rooming arrangements if I'll have a cumbersome or annoying costume to wear. Id rather not have to wait or walk a while to get an irritating costume off.

    >This

There was this one time I was doing Ledouche, and I ventured off one train stop towards a pretty ghetto area to get some food with some friends. We walked down the street trying not to care at some of the curious/angry stares we encountered. However, there was this one dude right next to his escalade and a bunch of his friends started nodding to everyone around him. When we got near he goes "YO....I like dem colors son, hell yeh",and he proceeded to nod to his fellow mates in strong approval.

    cool story.

    It was pretty cool.
    >> Anonymous 08/06/09(Thu)12:46 No.2020916
I happen to agree with Wired.
I do just about everything I can to avoid being out in a costume. This usually involves booking attached hotels. Even leaving my hotel room and running into the cleaning ladies embarrasses me.

I'd like to see cons start to do what Japan does. Comiket sets up big changing booths for cosplayers because they do not want people arriving in costumes, taking the subway, etc.

AX now that it has no attached hotels is in sore need of stuff like that. I had to change into an armored costume in a shit tiny bathroom. Never again.

actually it's from the online version of the story, which I only came across via a totally different topic:

Nice. Sounds like you got the street cred to get some turf. It'll be The Crips, the Bloods, and the GayAsses, lol.
Anyway, it's a better story than what happens to me. My stories of cosplay in public usually end up with me getting propositions for buttsex. (Stupid sexy leather pants.)

I used to be really self-conscious about my cosplay (not that it ever really stopped me from commuting in costume), but I got over it once I realized how stare-happy people are when I'm in normal street clothes. Besides, carrying a costume to convention would leave me dragging luggage around and having to bum hotel room space off a friend if I were to stay later than when coat check operates.
