    Plain inaccurate.

Pokemans are pokemans, not people with weird outfits. Not only that, but a lot of people think tossing a bunch of fabric on thats the same color as a pokemon = gijinka cosplay (although same cases thats what it is).

Gijinka makes me rage the same as "Kawaii Neko HotTopic Kingdom Hearts character from deviantArt".

You can't cosplay a gijinka and say you hate people's original interpretations of a character that only distantly resemble said character without being a hypocrite.

    Sage for self post

But with My Galade I am satisfied with it. But after AX some stuff started to get weak, like the Tonfa blades for it. The handles got weak so I need to re-construct them to be stronger, and possibly add some EL wire to the edge with a pinkish purple glow to give an illusion of Psycho-Cut.

Also, the helmet. For a first attempt at an armored helmet I did a good job, but I didn't like how it came out, should've been rounder at the top then flat down, but either way the cosplay came out looking decent.

That and replace the pants with Karate Gi pants than just white jeans and change out the sneakers.

I agree that stuff like that makes me rage more than the more "well done" Gikinkas. But overall I'm still not a fan of it, like I said pokemon are pokemon. Creative liberties, still have to be taken when you're doing something fursuit/mascot style, if not more. You're transferring something usually non-human looking to a fursuit/mascot. Sure people are scared of being a furry, don't like the heat, or it just isn't their thing, but its still accurate and will actually look like a Pokemon.

I mean does this: http://www.cosplay.com/costume/178331/ not make most of you rage? Obviously even though the construction is nice and there was a good bit of effort put into it, it still a lame idea. Its the exact same thing with Gjinkas, but like inverted. Kuja does not look like a Neko or Wolf or whatever, he looks like a human with a monkey tail and thats the way it should be cosplayed if you want to do it right. Kuja is Kuja, not a wolf.

There are few instances where "original designs" work, for example Maguma, I think your Kamina Lagann is great. It just works, and it makes some sense. Although I can't honestly say I can say the same for your "Ginjinka Palkia".

Completely with everybody on the throwing-on-similar-colored fabric does not a Gijinka make. I really love well-executed gijinka because it allows for interpretation and design, which most cosplays don't really give room for. That said, it should be recognizable, and while using that huge guide of fanart, I'm always pleased to see ones that deviate from it into new territory.

However, at times I think of Mean Girls (pic related) where the costumes were slutty, then paired with animal ears and a tail to call themselves a mouse or a rabbit. (I'm a MOUSE. DUH!)

If gijinka are products of design, then they should be approached as any fashion piece would be approached. An analysis of silhouette, shapes and patterns. So if you're going with something like... I dunno, A Merril, then it should have rounder shapes and circular motifs. The character should be recognizable almost instantly.

I come at that from experience... I did a non-Pokemon gijinka. Was at a meet for an hour, holding a figure of the mascot, and with my partner, and it took that long before somebody figured out what the hell I was supposed to be. Learn from failures, I suppose...

I was on the fence for a while on the matter. I agree with most of the sentiments in this thread. It can be a well thought out creative design. It is when ears are slapped on pajamas or just slutty outfit that is looses some of its charm.

That being said I hope to try my own hand at it this coming year. I was hoping to try a version of Honchkrow. Haven't seen it done yet so it should be interesting. Was either going to go with a more suit/pimp outfit or maybe a plague doctor out fit. Any thoughts y'all?

As my own goes. Yeah, what I have in the picture is my base, but I have added on some parts, I've created a more armor like belt so as to cover my waist, added a drooping piece of fabric that hangs between my legs down to the floor that has the same colors as the rest of the outfit, all of this accented with a sword and shield modeled after Dialga.

I find it more tolerable and recognizable in a group, personally. One person dressed as a not as popular pokemon won't get recognized as much and just shrugged off as crappy cosplay. Same goes for designs of semi-popular ones that aren't entirely obvious, which is why most people stick to that one artists gijinka.

Sort of related, I wanted to do a group consisting of eevee and all the evolutions, but using different j fashions/"teenage stereotypes" of the sorts. Would that be pushing it? It'd be hard to keep it incredably accurate, but I've just had this idea in my head forever, and it won't go away.

It'd be nice if more Poke'mon cosplayers designed their own takes on humanoid Poke'mon instead of all using the same guy's art. There's a lady out there that designs a lot of her own Poke'mon cosplays. She wears the Pikachu one the most, but she has several. I really like her designs. I forget her name...but I think she's the same lady that holds the Poke'mon collection record.

You're thinking of PikaBelleChu, and she is... well, she's certainly something.

In regards to people doing their own designs. A couple friends and I did some gijinka last year.. I did a design from the main gijinka website, they both did their own designs. The responses afterwards were mainly, "I recognize one of them, but I can't even tell which Pokemon the other two are trying to be!" which was disappointing, because my friends had put a lot of work into their designs. I guess having the one main gijinka artist makes it so that those particular designs are more recognizable, so more people are likely to stick to those? idk.

I like pretty much all gijinka, because it has rekindled a lot of peoples' nostalgic love for Pokemon! Even if some of it's not that great, the fact that people are still paying attention to and cosplaying something I've loved for 11 years straight makes me happy.

Pikabellechu doesn't really do gijinka outfits, other then one of her pikachu ones. Most are based on the pokemon, where as gijinka is the pokemon into a human. Which most people get wrong, thus they don't do their own damn outfits, or do them really wrong.

The problem with that is not everyone is a good costume designer and not everyone likes doing it. Though there have been some good original ones.

Those that aren't good at designing costumes and/or don't want to, there's nothing wrong with that...but they could look around for a good design. There's tons of artists out there with gijinka designs and most of them would be very flattered to have someone cosplay their design, if you gave credit. But most people make a solid color dress, throw on some ears and a tail, and call it a day. It's very boring to look at.

The reason I did gijinka is because I loved the design (and the Pokemon), and it allowed me to try some things I haven't done before with a costume...
    1) I got to make wings
    2) I made a pleated skirt
    3) It was female

I kinda wish I came up with my own design, but having the recognition from doing a better-know design helped. Because the reference picture was relatively vague on exactly what parts of the costume were what, I got to have a bit of creative license on their interpretation.

I went to the AX gijinka gathering, and largely stayed out of the group photos. It was more fun to watch other people be silly, and occasionally be asked which Pokemon I was.

ITT: furries trying to justify themselves.

What? Do you actually think we didn't know?

Actually, the gijinka I remember seeing for Honchkrow is just a fun outfit for wearing around. It's kind of like a 1930's mob boss look. Black hat, long white scarf, long coat... it's just a pretty nice outfit.

I think I'll stick with my Darkrai, however. At least it's humanoid in its normal form. :P Now I just have to figure how to keep those damn shoulder spikes on and standing up without dragging the rest of the costume down. I dunno, maybe I'll bring it for AUSA or something.

I personally think that if you're having fun, do what you want. That's what I thought cosplaying was about; having fun, and showing off your creativity. Now it's all about being the best of everything, and being an attention whore. I find it saddening. Though I do agree that last minute thrown together bad representations make me sad on the inside. But you also need to consider that while the majority of those that do that are probably lazy as shit, there might be one that does that because they simply lack the money/time to make it better, and bless their heart they're trying.
As an example I'm being Eevee for halloween, and four yards of faux fur for the neck ruff, tail and ears is going to cost me a little more than 100 dollars.
