67 KB PLEASE EXPLAIN ... WHY YOU LIKE COSPLAY Anonymous 07/30/09(Thu)00:49 No.2003406
Why do you like pretending to be a cartoon character and walking around?

Why do you work on a costume for months (or spend $50 or $500 on it) only to wear it for the weekend, then wait for another 3-6 months for another con.

Also, aren't you 19+ years old cosplayer losers? You're too old! I know a guy who is 25 and cosplay is his life. LOL, loser.

    Also, not trolling.

ive noticed that most ppl that do cosplay have behavior/family/personality issues, i guess its just a way for them to escape the reality they live in, and in the process gather some attention they want... or just theyre retarded fags who like to dress like cartoon characters and have the money to do it lol

also im not op so inb4 same fag blah blah

Because everyone likes attention and cosplay gives you a lot of it. When else in life will hordes of strangers walk up to you and shower you with compliments and ask to take pictures of you? Also it's an easy way for nerds to meet and mingle with each other without having to go through the awkwardness of being your normal, ugly self.

Don't get me wrong, cosplay can be cool ... and it's a form of escapism.

BUT in a way it's an extreme form of escapism.

Think of people who spend an afternoon reading a novel to escape from the mundane reality.

HOWEVER, people who cosplay spend weeks, even months and lots of money to walk around "pretending" to be cartoon character for just 1 weekend.

What is it, 1 weekend of attention whoring? Ha.

Ah, so cosplay is a way to meet new people. That's cool.

But in a way, you can see cosplay as a crutch to meet people, because nerds are too shy to walk up to a stranger and strike a conversation.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not looking down on cosplay.

I'm only making this topic from a pure academic perspective.

    >> Anonymous 07/30/09(Thu)00:58 No.2003446
There are plenty of hobbies that people spend lots of cash and time on which is essentially a waste of time. Cosplay is not exclusive to this; it is just not considered a "normal" hobby like ships in a bottle, train models, and other random hobbies.

Cosplaying for me is like Halloween on a different day (well more like multiple days). And hell I love wearing costumes of characters I like.
    >> Anonymous 07/30/09(Thu)00:58 No.2003447
So if we began to show off our cars that we drive at a car show, it'd be 'normal'? Or if we were to dress up for a play, that'd be 'normal'?

I don't cosplay, but i'd imagine it'd be liking a character from a cartoon, comic book, etc and messing around as it.

Some people just enjoy something and wish to express it :)

idk, i cosplay because i've loved dressing up since i was little. wearing awesome clothes that would get me beaten in "real life" is fun. it's not "escapism" for me, or a crutch to meet people. i'm a normal person in and outside of cons, outgoing and such. i love different fashions, and i love animu/videogames. cosplay is a blend of the two, so obviously i'd enjoy it.

    >> Anonymous 07/30/09(Thu)01:02 No.2003473
its a hooby to me. spending the time making the costume fills up free time and also educates. sewing costumes and constructing props can prepare you to hem your own cloths that are a bit too long or how you should paint your bathroom door, stuff like that.
also its awesome when you make a good costume and people at con show appreciation for all your hard work. I made a mech costume took weeks to make and then fell apart at the con after like half an hour but it was still wroth it because people liked my costume XD.
    >> Anonymous 07/30/09(Thu)01:02 No.2003474

    I'll bite.
I don't pretend to be a cartoon character. I just wear my costume. I've always liked Halloween since I was a little kid and finding out there were other things you could wear a costume to made me happy.
I've always liked making things and some cosplay designs are interesting aesthetically and challenging to execute.
Other than my cosplay hobby I'm boringly normal. I have a full time job, pay my bills, have a boyfriend and spend plenty of my free time doing non-cosplay related things.

Cosplay definately isn't my life..it's just my goofy hobby. I go to a couple of cons every year to hang out with friends I met through the hobby and don't get to see often since they live far away.
There's really no deeper or hidden meaning behind it.

No. because the ones 15 and under are usually annoying little brats If it wasn't for the people between 16ish and about 30, I wouldn't even be going to conventions.

Also not everyone tried to "pretend to be the character" a lot of people will just try to be in character for pictures, so they don't fuck said character over... unless its a lulzy pic for shits and giggles.

Also where else and how often do you get to wear weird or out of this world stuff without being frowned upon? Certainly not the mall. Infact cosplayers on /cgl/ would frown upon those anime club morons from your local high school running around dressed as Naruto characters or whatever causing nuisance around the HotTopic.

For some, cosplay is a form of escapism. They have things that take attention of their regular lives, and can cause untold amounts of stress. Using cosplay as an outlet for that stress can actually be a healthy alternative than keeping it bottled inside, until it explodes in a gigantic homicidal fury that could level an entire city block.

Others do it because it is, in fact, fun (gasp). You get to meet new people, talk about favorite anime shows/video games, and generally have a good time with it. It's as much a social scene as it is a hobby, and with any social scene, there's retarded amounts of drama, a good chunk of it being found on /cgl/ posted by Anons that enjoy masturbating to Miyu or Ai-Honey.

Others do it as part of an occupation. Yes there are models that cosplay for photos. A crude example would be anyone from Cosplay Deviants.

And there are those that do it simply because they want the attention. Most people tend to ignore those. Unless it's a woman, in which case most desperate virgins will be finding them one way or another anyway for jackoff material.

There have also been older people that cosplay. It's not uncommon for someone in their 30s to be doing cosplay, and I do believe there are some that are even older than that. And these people also live healthy lifestyles, have fulltime occupations, etc. They just cosplay because they enjoy it.

I've yet to run into anyone that was so mentally disturbed that they actually believed they were the character they were cosplaying. If someone is being in character, they're most likely just acting for the fans (I've done a bit of that myself to pander to FMA crowds). It's just about having fun.

TL;DR: Cosplay is fun. Piss off troll. Yada yada yada.

There are a lot of people (usually that "16ish to about 30" crowd I mentioned in my other post) are normal and able to not be a dimwit in the outside world. Hell, somewhere at this moment on this board, heres a thread ranting about the types that don't do so well in the "outside world." and how deluded and obsessed some "weeaboos" can get. Lots of people are just normal outside the cons, some aren't but a lot are. Those who don't are usually the younger teen crowed, usually they grow out of the phrase.

But really its just people hanging out and being more nerdy and dorky than usual.

Well I think its unfair to lum all cosplayers together, so I'll put them into categories:

    casual cosplayer = cool

14 years old kids cosplayer = annoying but whatever

    16-19 years old cosplayer= a phase, okay

19-25 years old cosplayer hardcore = WTF SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THEM, THEY NEED A LIFE.

So take that and suck on it for a little bit. I plan on being in cosplay for a while. Don't use it as a crutch, I'm quite sociable as it is. I do it for fun.

It is a bit of a touchy topic. Most people who are really into cosplay (such as myself, but there are others who are more obsessed) have some kind of compulsive habit/slight psychological disorder/social isolation/plain fascination with slaving over an outfit you only wear a few times out of your life. I'm into it for the fashion/artistic aspects, because I'm an art major and hope to get into fashion and costume some day.

I'm not going to say my social life is booming and I'm the coolest kid on the block, because that would be a terrible lie. But I like having a smaller, tighter group of friends who I can trust and rely on who also share similar interests. To me cosplaying is like exploring different facades of myself in creative ways that also help me meet other fans at cons (yeah, call me a nerd, blah blah) I'm going on 21 and I have awesome friends who are the same age and into the same thing. It's just another type of clique in a way, although cosplay is more like a subculture I think.

tl;dr: It can't really be explained in one way. Everyone has different reasons for being into it.

Troll thread, but heres a perspective (not for OP).
I'm not a cosplayer, just like to lech over some of the pictures on this board. But I totally support anyone who wants to cosplay, even really shitty cosplay. Why?

You are all gonna die. All human activity is brief and "pointless" and looks pretty fucking ridiculous. Oh, you worked at a desk for 30 years and bought a Ferarri/Yacht/Golf club membership/house/sent kids to college/whatever.

That's nice, you're still gonna die. Some people think you look bitchin' in that Ferarri, some people think you look like a dick driving it. It doesn't fucking matter.

You have lots of friends? If it makes you happy, great. Some people think your friends are total dicks though.

Even if every person on the planet thought cosplay was fucking lame, and only one person did it, and badly at that, it would still be just as worthwhile as any other pursuit.

    tl;dr:

If someone is having fun, then it doesn't matter what you fucking think. Everybody is a "loser" ultimately. Especially you.

I cosplay because cosplay is an amalgamation of all forms of art I enjoy with a pop culture twist. It's design, construction, acting, and presentation. I'm making something fun and putting on a show for all to see.

Plus, the majority of my costumes are streetwear of some sort, so when the con is over, the costumes get split up and mixed in with the rest of my wardrobe. Cosplay is FASHION.

It's a hobby like any other. People spend thousands of dollars on cards, houses, getting their hair/nails done every week, buying $50 shoes every week, etc. People pour money into genuinely worthless shit and it's accepted as normal.

Cosplaying is hardly worthless though. You actually go out somewhere, meet people with like interests, have fun, get some merchandise and (hopefully) go home with a few more stories to tell and a couple new friends. There's no harm in that, and it encourages people to learn crafts and shit.

[Insert people attempting to explain their hobby in a civilized manner, despite the obvious hostility towards the older animé, manga, and video game fans in here and cosplay in general.] [Insert mock contemplation here], oh really? [Insert more judgmental remarks and insults here.]"

Rinse and repeat until /cgl/ is thoroughly trolled.

    >>2003410 was right. Just why the hell are you in here?

To >>2003413 , scratch the surface of the random bystander (read: "normal") on the street and they'll more than likely have the same issues. They're just better at hiding it, which isn't necessarily a good thing.

    >>2003436 ...there, cosplay just saved a life that might've been lost to drug addiction.

There's someone else (I can't find the post at the moment) who posted that it let's them practice skills that could be used for making and repairing their own clothing. Shit, that's a skill most of us could use (myself included). But being a guy, home economics wasn't really a cool course to take back in high school. (As I'm sure you're well aware.)

Also, from your constant bashing of the older cosplayers I can guess a few things. One: You've never met anyone who looked lot younger than they actually were. (Or else they lied to you about their age because there are more closed minded assholes like you out there.) Two: You've only ever gone to animé conventions, because if you'd ever been to a science fiction convention you would have seen older cosplayers. In fact, I plan on doing a lot more sci-fi cosplay when I'm older simply because it would look a little more accurate. Three: You yourself aren't that old, I'd guess 16 years old maximum. Otherwise, you'd be with the rest of us bitching about the newfags in our respective fandoms (read: the immature brats like you who roll in thinking you know everything and own the place).

Do you like Halloween? Do you like going to costume parties? Or maybe even just weddings? You dress on those occasions, don't you? Or let me guess, you're one of those brats who shows up those occasions wearing the rattiest thing you can find just to ruin the event.

Also, how many times have you done something stupid just to meet a guy/girl? (No judgments on preference here.) If you haven't done such a thing, then ~you~ need a life. And how many times have you done something stupid with your friends, just for fun? Well? What's wrong with dressing up just to break the ice? I'm sure that if an attractive guy/girl, dressed in formal attire, walked up to you, had a brief conversation with you, and asked you for your number, you'd give it to them. And how many times have you been told, "Don't physically meet anyone you've only met online!" Well, conventions are neutral territory. Common ground (some might even say "holy ground") upon which they can meet and chat and not be completely paranoid because they think the other person is going to drag them off somewhere.

You know what, really this whole thing comes down to manners. We don't come into ~your~ house, sit down with ~your~ friends and badger ~you~ to defend to ~your~ way of life and members of ~your~ chosen group and belittle you and friends over it. We don't ask you why you're an enormous bastard/bitch (your choice) to a group of people you nothing about other than a shared hobby.

Cosplayers (hardcore and casual) from every fandom (anime/manga, sci-fi/fantasy, gaming, etc.) have more courage, determination, and charisma than YOU WILL EVER EVEN DREAM OF HAVING. I might not be hardcore, but I can (and do) respect those people who choose to make and wear the costumes that give all of us something nice to look at that reminds of who we are and gives us an identity other than: age, sex, race, nation, etc.

So, to you, and everyone else out there like you. I think the picture will sum it up nicely. Shut the fuck up, get the fuck out, and fuck you and the computer you rode in on you stupid, ignorant piece of filth.

PS: If it weren't for nerds, you wouldn't have any of these modern conveniences (computers, cell phones, mp3 players, cars, lights, clocks, running water) you and your kind depend on. Just try getting by without technology for a day. I think you'll crumble within four hours.

I like feeling like I'm being productive with my hobbies. Hanging out with friends and drinking is all well and good, but I don't feel like I'm contributing anything. With cosplay, if I do a good job, I know that complete strangers will go, "Oh, awesome! I love this series/character!"

I started getting into it because my mom used to make elaborate Halloween costumes for us as kids. When I got too old and she got too busy, I started making my own costumes, and since I was interested in anime, cosplay was a natural offshoot.

I also like cosplay because it interesting to see various interpretations of the same thing. This is why, actually, I'm not really interested at all in live action cosplay. It's interesting to see a character and think, "What would this look like in real life?" and come as close as possible.

It also hones my patience, which is something I need to work on, my craft, which is something everyone needs to work on, and gives me a reason to take care of my body. Even though cosplay is fuck expensive, I like doing it a lot. I've also noticed that even people who haven't heard of anime are impressed by it, because it's a lot of effort and determination into something for the sake of itself. Most people don't make an effort for anything these days. I'm glad I have something I'm actually passionate about.

I coming here late but here I go.
Okay people cosplay for different reasons. It could be attendtion. Wearing a costume could also be a HUGE magnet for people who are interested or fan of *insert game/anime here*

It is a form of escapism but much like video games, sporting events, clubs etc could also be considered an escapist activity. Cosplay much like other super specific hobby related events can easily slip into an 'extreme'. In a hobby that encourages total emersion ("costume isnt 100% accurate" "yoko is less/more of a whore" etc)it isnt a suprise that people get carried away. Im not saying that anyone who is participating will always show this 'extreme' 'escapist' behavior but it is more likely considering it is an enviorment that does encourage this kind of behavior to a certain extent.

I think OP is being too dramatic and a troll. Like most things it can be a fairly acceptable hobby if handled in moderation and with goals and behavior and attitude that is controlled and reasonable. But I dont see many who follow these kinds of rules even those who will often claim they do.
