15 KB Why do you cosplay? Anonymous 07/29/09(Wed)02:35 No.2000996
    Tell me, /cgl/.
Is it for fun? For attention?
Where's the line between obsessive and just-for-fun? As someone who's never cosplayed before it intrigues me how its possible for nerds cosplaying anime/cartoon/game characters to rip on other nerds cosplaying anime/cartoon/game characters.

    Discuss?

it's fun, and challenging, i love trying to figure out how to build stuff and then just coming up with ideas that'd be fun to do in public. Always an idea man.

If you're attractive, it's just for fun.

If you're ugly, it's an obsession.

    There you go.

I like to sew, and I've always liked costumes *shrug* it was a matter of time before I started anime fagging my hobbies up.

Not only is sewing fun, but I like being able to talk to people about the character or series I'm from...quick way to make new friends!

Though I'm pretty sure /cgl/ thinks I'm just a petty attention whore :|

I enjoy making stuff - cosplay just gives me more interesting stuff to make.
    >> Anonymous 07/29/09(Wed)10:01 No.2001402
Well I got into it because my friend told me that at conventions "cosplay is just what people do" so I really didn't think there was a choice in the matter [I was twelve at the time]

Ever since I've just kept it up because I love to compete with myself, see who I can do better this time and whatnot. Also I like the clothes.

For fun, friends, social network. You meet new people all the time with similar interests and it keeps your blood pumped.

I've always loved dressing up, and this is just an excuse to do so in public.
Making the costumes is a challenge, figuring out how to sew everything together such that it turns out right, making props and accessories from whatever I can find, hunting through thrift shops and dollar stores for other materials and bases...
I think making the costume is more than half of the fun, honestly.

How can we rip on others? Usually they deserve it
    Attentionwhores
    Really shitty attempts
Completely the wrong size/shape for a character
    Store purchased
    Etc.

    I hate having money.

I could hear this all in the Walken voice.

I cosplay mostly for fun, partially because the more I sew, the more I like it. I also do love having pictures taken of me, so that's a nice bonus.

The line is somewhat hard to draw sometimes. Some people might say it's when a cosplayer goes to every con they can, etcetc, but what if they're selling things there - commissions and things? Or what if they really do have that much disposable income? Better a con than overpriced drinks at a bar (sometimes).
I think for sure when anyone thinks they are the character (Unless they're a child - totally forgivable then), or that other people in costume are the character they are in (and no, I don't mean calling them by their character name after you first meet, etc.), that falls into "creepy, stay away from me" territory.

I saw this thread earlier and i've been thinking about the questions posed in op. I have no idea why i cosplay; i cannot use a sewing machine so i hand sew (poorly) or i get my nans help. I don't like attention because it usually leads to bad attention and i'm not a very sociable person. However i enjoy the satisfaction of finishing things, learning to sew is pretty fun and i'll admit to feeling really good when someone comes up to me and compliments my costume.
As for ripping other peoples cosplay, thats tricky. People will always compare eachother no matter what they are into, nerds are no exception. I think when we insult others its because maybe we are scared that people talk about us in the same way or that we are insignificant. Some of us are perfectionists and do not like it when someone gets attention for a cosplay that is worse than their own. Maybe its easier to be negative when no-one knows who you are. Who knows for sure, these are just guesses.

The answer to that question is the same for everyone:

    Fake answer:
    >"I do it for friends and in the name of fun!"

    Real answer:
    >"I do it because the attention makes me feel special."
