okay so I'm planning what conventions I'm going to for 2010. In addition to what conventions I always go to I'm planning on going to one more. I've narrowed it do to 3 choices. Acen, Ohayocon, and Colossalcon. I can only go to one of them because the drive is fairly far for all of them except maybe Colossalcon. Google maps said it would be a 3 hour drive. So my question is, which should I pick and why? The pros and cons of each, etc.

    Pic unrelated

As a person who went to Ohayocon in 2008, you should go to Anime Central because of its large convention attandence for the Midwest. It's held in May compared to Ohayocon in late-January. If a massive snowstorm strikes Central Ohio during the time of Ohayocon, you basically wasted around $50 to register and hotel costs too. I don't know much about Colossalcon though.

I never understood those northeastern conventions that take place in the winter months. The snow always kills my car.

Ohayocon sucks and unless the higher ups there clean shit up in the next few years (and possibly convince the columbus convention center to give a damn about letting them have a decent sized room for main,) I doubt it'll last.

Acen is OK, but if you want to go to any of the large events (and even some of the more popular panels,) you're going to have to wait in line. And the panels that DO have lines, well, if you don't get their early you probably get in. Acen has a few space issues, as far as I can tell. Dealers room is pretty good though.

Colossalcon is smaller than the other two, but they're bound to get bigger very fast, they have been the past two years. And the Kalahari convention center is pretty awesome. Waterpark (you get passes with a hotel room,) decent programming, fun con. The dealers room was a little cramped last year but I hear tell it's going to be in a better room next year.

how is colossalcon price wise usually? room price + pre-reg

Colossalcon is a shit tier con with an amazing location. One of its biggest problems is that, out of all three, it's the youngest. Colossalcon's attendance is mostly preteens to teenagers and, if Vic or Travis get invited again next year, it will probably be Mini Skirt Army/whatever the fuck Con again.

On the plus side, the Kalahari is positively amazing. Out of all the cons I've been to this year (I think I'm nearing 9 or 10 now--hell if I know) the Kalahari was the best location, because even though the con was a drag during most points in time, the waterpark was amazing. There's also camels and giraffes and stuff in a mini safari park on site, and I hear they're adding elephants.

Staff is bitchy at Colossal. I dealt with several staffers who were assholes. And Brad kept getting asked questions about Death Note, even at the goddamn Gundam Panel.

Colossal also uses wristbands for everything. If they do shit the same as they did last year, you'll have one wrist band for the waterpark and a plastic one for the con as your con badge.

I felt really old at Colossal though, just from the general...attitude of the con, even though I'm only 19. There were two panels on How to Glomp, raging fantards abound, and really long walks to everything. That being said, I still did enjoy Colossal, even though Mike Sinterniklaas cancelled day of the con (Vic was only there for Saturday despite being scheduled for all three days--not that I gave a shit about Vic, but I was hoping he'd straight out cancel because he died or something).

tl;dr, I'm going to ColossalCon next year and it's a great vacation con because of the location. Ohayo is my second favorite con of those listed, the best convention center location out of all the cons I've been to, and probably the best overall con I go to. ACen is nice if you like huge ass dealer's rooms and awesome pizza, but the location is a lot of walking and the guests usually suck the most.

So if Ohayocon does not get better, the convention will die?

Colossalcon. Room was ~$120 a night for 4 people. Very clean room. Weekend at the door was $40. Parking is free.

Adding to this, the Kalahari's normal rate is around twice that.

So far everybodys comments on Colossal have made me like it, but the feeling old at 19 thing kind of scares me lol. I'm also 19 and I usually go to Youmacon. Which..we all know is pre-teen hell. If it's anything like that then I'm a little turned off from the convention.

So how are the guests usually at all three?
    >> Anonymous 07/27/09(Mon)21:04 No.1997769
I would say either ACen or Ohayocon. I personally would go with ACen. It's warmer and it's bigger, so there's more people and therefore more going on. I always have a great time.

ACen's guests suck. Really hard. Ohayo's aren't that bad and occasionally they get some good names. Colossal's were decent in that I wanted to see two of them, even though only one showed up.

ACen has the worst lines out of the three cons, too. Don't expect to get into any of the dances or any of the major panels or concerts without waiting in a long-ass line. The weather is the nicest at ACen though, whereas Ohayocon has snowstorms and Colossal can be a bit hot (though, it's at a waterpark, so deal with it).

Youmacon is young as well, and Colossalcon is a similar vibe. Youma's very similar, though of the two, based off of conventions, Youma is better. Colossal has a better location, but Youma has more cosplayers and decent guests too.

Youma has problems with staffers giving a shit though--meaning long waits in elevators (and getting trapped in one for 30 minutes like I did) and lots of fuckers with signs.
    >> Anonymous 07/27/09(Mon)21:14 No.1997781
I'd recommend ACen, as well. Idk what anon's beef was, but the people there were awesome IMO. The hotel is beautiful, there's a shit ton of people there, and the dealer's room/artist alley is really awesome. So yeah, my vote's for ACen.

P.S. - That Baralai is win, moar pics?

Hmm thanks for the input, I'll have to think on it because mainly ohayocon and colossal are standing out to me.

Youmacon elevators make me want to choke puppies... and I hate the hyatts staff. lol

    >>1997781 I always look forward to large dealers rooms and artist alleys.

Only two pictures for Baralai though.

The spread out function rooms at Ohayo and ACEN make my feet hurt by mid saturday, but I'm a bit of a fatty. Either way I seem to spend the most time just walking from one end to the other. Hopefully Ohayo gets the closer convention center space this year. Colossalcon function rooms are very centrally located and parking is just outside, so it really frees up alot of time that would otherwise be spent looking for the car in the parking deck or walking 20 minutes to the dealer room. You really can't have a bad time at either of them though.

Comparing the food options from the viewpoint of someone who can't eat fast food for every meal and doesn't want to spend $20 or more per person. Colossalcon had a nice mix. There were various dining options onsite and down the street. Since you don't have to worry about parking deck stuff, you could drive a couple blocks and there were over 30 chain eateries of various pricing. Ohayocon has a big foodcourt on location, but not much else outside of the con since its in a downtown setting. Fortunately the food court prices are reasonable and I think I recall one or more of the vendors stayed open 24 hours. ACEN was a bit of a challenge. There is an expensive restaurant onsite. There is a McDs like 3 blocks away you can walk to if you're not in a hurry and the weather is nice. Unfortunately I havnt found anything of the mid-quality and mid-price range nearby. I think the IHOP was a 10 minute drive, but then you have to lose your spot in the parking deck to go. I always end up spending much more than I would prefer on dining at ACEN. Would have helped if there was a minidfridge at our ACEN room. Both Colossal and Ohayo hotels had minifridges.

acen. more people = larger variety of boobs.
    >> Anonymous 07/28/09(Tue)07:34 No.1998959
I've been to all three this year, and my favorite was Ohayocon. Acen is always great, but such a large number of people can get taxing, and Colossalcon wouldn't have been worth it if I wasn't hanging out with friends I rarely see.

ACEN! A fair majority more of decent cosplay than any other con I have been to :)

Con = ridiculous lines for badges, get your shit mailed to you.
