So are there any more Otakon masquerade videos to be found? There's a few if you search for 09 or 2009 masquerade (the Baccano one is under "grand central swing". In particular, I'd like to see the Gurren Lagann colorguard one, the Naruto drums, the FF VI opera, etc. Has anyone found anything else?

Otakon discourages video taping because the videos are technically IP of the 1st Mariner Arena. Only press is allowed to take video, and no more than one skit in succession. Not that that stops most people, they probably only have that policy to make the Arena happy and don't enforce it at all. I was filming a lot of skits and nobody cared.

This year, Otakon is selling DVDs of the Masquerade and that's part of the reason why video recording isn't allowed.

    Regardless, people obviously did it.

Aw man, the Naruto martial arts demonstration was A-FUCKING-MAZING. At first I was like "A Naruto skit? Yeah whatever!" But the Sasuke and Rock Lee guys were really skilled at what they were doing, and they even followed the fighting styles of their characters. I used to play the fighting game a lot and that one part where they were sparring it was just AA->BA etc running through my head. I was so pissed they didn't get any sort of award, they were easily one of the top 10 skits this year.

Please tell me someone got a video of that

I didn't hear that they were selling them; it simply said in our masq participant packets that we'd all receive DVDs of our own skits. Who the hell knows when that will be, or if it will happen at all, though? After hearing about what a fiasco the whole thing was (and being extremely relieved that we decided to do it exhibition only), I don't really trust that I'll ever actually see that DVD.

Ours was the last one, the Young Frankenstein one. We went well over time and got disqualified purposely, then left to go get Indian food instead of sticking around for the awards, but everything I've heard about the whole masq since then has made me rage more and more, so I have basically zero faith in this whole "performance DVD" thing now.

As far as I'm concerned, when a group that had half bought costumes wins Best in Show, someone needs to be fired. I'm not sure if it was entirely the director's fault, though. I've heard several people villainized over the whole debacle and since I didn't even go for craftsmanship judging I really didn't see enough of the process to figure out who was in charge of what. So I also don't know who was handling the supposed DVDs. I think that the masq packet said something along the lines of "you may have heard we were sending out DVDs, and you'll be pleased to learn that that's still the case", but it didn't give any more info than that.

So yeah, I'm hoping that maybe somebody got a shitty bootleg video of our skit since otherwise I might never see it at all.

    hmm, let's see:

-refusing craftsmanship judges from attending the halftime judging
-rushing presentation judges and forcing them into decisions within 5 minutes
-allowing craftsmanship judges to take up to 40 minutes to judge groups while later being forced to rush later groups
-allowing an FFVI girl to yell at the judges in private
-allowing a presentation judge to throw out craftsmanship numbers
-beginning the award ceremony before the judges were even finished deliberating
    -changing the craftsmanship judging locations
-not giving the presentation judges skit descriptions, but only numbers
-openly admitting to hating cosplayers and masquerades

how about how last year's BiS winners were disqualified because they showed up ONE minute late, mostly because the masq security staffer held them

    how's this for a start?

Who said my panties were in a knot? The masquerade was fucked up, and people are just supposed to shrug and not hope that they change who's running it and make it less shittastic next year? If I'd been competing in it, I'd be pissed. As it is, I just think it blows that it was botched so badly. I was chill backstage because I was hanging out with the participants and they were all cool. The people running the thing were the ones who fucked up, not the people in the masq.

I didn't say I didn't like the Baccano skit. They deserved an award for their performance, because their skit was the best. But Best In Show implies that you were the best all around, not just the best skit, and the judges gave it to a group that didn't make all of their costumes. I can't say that I'm cool with that.

Best In Show is generally awarded to the group with the best combination of craftsmanship and skit. If you want to focus on one or the other, that's great, and there should be awards for craftsmanship and awards for performances. But to win the award for being the best all around when you didn't make all your own costumes (or, theoretically, if you didn't write your own skit) is not something I can approve of.

That group was perfectly honest at least about not making all their costumes. I asked a couple of them about things and they said outright they didn't make them. They had 3 or 4 people who entered into craftsmanship.

I would rather see Best In Show go to a group with a better performance, the only thing that should nullify that is if all costumes are bought, are held together with hot glue, or if the group doesn't enter craftsmanship at all.

If the FF6 group is so butthurt, they should have entered hall cosplay and swept that for the weekend (which is clearly what they wanted). Their performance was a total snooze.

I do agree someone high up in masq needs to be fired based solely on the fact that there were two different FF6 opera skits. The poor single girl that went first, she seemed so upset, because no one knew until it happened they were doing the same skit. Who in the masq lets something like that happen?
    >> Rex Dart !!maw5rFvQiia 07/22/09(Wed)23:55 No.1986302
    >>1986286
I don't blame anyone in the Baccano group for anything; I don't think they did anything wrong. They did an amazing job on their skit and they looked great, and it's not like I've never bought parts for a costume. There was nothing dishonest or wrong on their part. I just think the award they got was inappropriately given since Best In Show, to me, carries an implication of both best craftsmanship AND best performance, and I'm sorry if they took my disapproval as a personal attack.

And I fully agree about the opera skits. A staffer told me early on before the first girl went out that there were two, and after the first one I went out and saw the girl in the second one practicing and looking so incredibly nervous it broke my heart. I really wanted someone to get cockpunched over that, though the staffer I talked to also said that they didn't know they had two opera skits until everyone had checked in and one of them told them that that was their skit as well. I'm not sure if that's true or not since he was just a green room attendant, but it might be.

Not from the Baccano skit, but I see where you're coming from. I feel a bias to stick up for them as half of them are my friends, but I understand your point.

We can all agree the masq fucked up with letting both those opera skits though, they were both great and it's a shame a group overshadowed a singular performer

There are a million Naruto or KH skits, but they're fine even if they're mirror-imaged dance shit. Again, fuck you Nazi. Sorry masquerades didn't consult your own tastes ahead of time and I'm sure it was the second group's fault for not consulting the first FFVI girl's feelings. Shitheads.

As someone who knows multiple members of the group, they didn't just want craftsmanship awards. They wanted to be able to perform for people. Can you really fault them for that?
And, they're mostly butthurt because they were told after it was all over "You would have won everything in this division if you were in this division, but you're not. LOL SRY." I think they're allowed to be miffed at that.

Take the awards out of the masquerade. You're there to entertain, right? Last time I checked awards weren't given to people like Siegfried and Roy or Wayne Newton and they all weren't in the same venue trying to rip open each other's jugulars for a trophy. Walking off to the sound of screams and thunderous applause can be incredibly gratifying.

The FF6 skit was a bore, and I'm an opera enthusiast. Considering that was more of a classical style she had going on and not really opera (Your voice has yet to mature and have the strength to sing without a damn mic until you're trained well into your 30s.)
And the costumes looked amazing on the outside... but the inside is a whole other story. I got a peak of fraying seams and hemlines.

The Baccano skit deserved it. An entertaining skit with an original concept, a lot of practice on their part (two of the girls actually took swing classes), and the costumes may not had been as advanced looking as the FF6 people, but they were at least well made.

I really don't think if the FF6 people would had entered for hall, they would get a big award. Probably a judges award.
