3 KB Your first time... Anonymous 06/23/09(Tue)20:47 No.1929491
Attention /cgl/ This was gonna be a specific question, but FUCK IT! What/Who was it that got you to cosplay? What was your first cosplay that you ever did? Do you think you've improved greatly since then? What was your first con like? What was a favorite memory of said con?

    Just wondering /cgl/ just wondering.

I saw cosplayers in an Animerica magazine, and went to my first con shortly after that with the most ghetto Aeris costume lol

BUT people were really nice, and I had a blast. I had no idea my costume sucked, and found lots of other FF7 cosplayers to run around with. It was a really good experience so I kept cosplaying after that.

A friend of mine told me about our local convention, Otakon, and got me into it. She told me that people dress up there and so I decided to go as one of my OCs...to say the least it was a big load of fail, but a lot better than the KH Cloud I was originally planning to do would have turned out.

I thought that was just what you did when you went to conventions, like a costume party. I was surprised when I saw people NOT cosplaying...

And yes, I have improved GREATLY. My first costume was made entirely of costume satin, was quite uncomfortable on me, I wore party store makeup, and I didn't have a wig. It was made of fail. One guy took my picture, probably to put on the internet as an example of horrid cosplay.
    >> Anonymous 06/23/09(Tue)21:05 No.1929541
    Animerica for me as well.

My first and only cosplay was Sanji from the Water 7 arc of One Piece. Relatively simple. Just black trousers, Orange striped shirt and black vest. Straighten my hair, add the eyebrow curl and put in a cigarette and I looked just like Sanji.

I knew about cons for about a year before i got dragged to my first one. My first con was Ushicon 4 and my friends from high school took me with them. My first cosplay was actually the Mascot of the con, Ushico. I have greatly improved in cosplay. I use to not car and would throw together closet cosplay if i didn't have the money to make it. My first con was amazing i had a blast and fell in love with cons instantly. My favorite memory was every thing, the tiny ass rave, the having photos taken of me, the running around the dealer room and seeing all the crazy stuff i could buy, the meeting crazy new people, spending $300 in doujin and figures, doing my first walk on.
    I loved it all.

Pic related: My first cosplay, on the left, at my first con.
    >> Anonymous 06/23/09(Tue)21:16 No.1929573
My friend called me up two days before Otakon to tell me I was going and to put together a costume. Death Note was the only animu I had even heard of at that point so I threw together a white shirt and pants, colored my hair with talcum powder and went off.

    >What/Who was it that got you to cosplay?
My love for dressing up like my fav. character. I thought I was the only one who would do it. I was wrong.

    >What was your first cosplay that you ever did?
My VERY FIRST cosplay was Sanzo from Saiyuki. And my poses sucked ass. The costume was nice cause I bought it.
My very first homemade costume was Puni Puni Poemi, and that was horrible too.

    >Do you think you've improved greatly since then?
Im still a bad seamstress. My looks have improved though. Make-up is kinda important to cosplay too.

    >What was your first con like?
I didnt cosplay at my first con. I was sick with bad stomachaches, but I had a good time, cause my mom gave me 200 bucks to spend on whatever I wanted in the dealerroom. Bonus~

    >What was a favorite memory of said con?
    What I wrote just before.

My friends. They are terrible terrible people for getting me into cosplay.

My first cosplay was Yomiko from Read or Die. My first cosplay for a con was Tomo from Azumanga Daioh. It was terribly made..but oh well.

I think I am improving. Haven't improved greatly.

My first con was special. Simply put.

I always heard about cosplay and anime conventions, but I thought they were things that took part in other parts of the country. I was at the grocery store with my dad one day when I saw this small anime magazine. I decided to take a look at it since that sort of magazine didn't usually show up in that store. It talked about a convention in Houston, TX (I lived in Dallas and still do). I remembered the website and convinced my dad to go. LOL I just turned 14 at the time.

It ended up being a small con (O-chibicon.Remember that? Ya) but I cosplayed Kuroneko from Trigun. It was pretty horrible. It was pretty much a black tan top, skirt, with green eye shadow and whiskers drawn on my face. Oh yes..the feather boa tail. Don't forget that.

    I've DEFIANTLY improved since that..

My first con was Anime Iowa 05. I am not sure if that con is good or bad. My experience there was bad, but that was because of personal reasons.

Favourite memory from that con would be watching my daughter (who was then 1.5 years old.) Run around and have a blast. She kept hamming it up for people there.

My first cosplay was Water 7 Nami, I wore her at ACen 2006. I think I am slightly better then than, but not by much. OH I also got into cosplay because I saw how much fun the cosplayers at Anime Iowa were having and I wanted to have fun as well.

Hah, I got into cosplay a few years ago because I wanted to dress up like my favorite characters. I used to be a narutard, so my first cosplay was Sakura. I have improved exponentially, in such ways as not using ebay, learning to sew and use wigs, and pick better fandoms. But in spite of it all, my first con was my most memorable. I met lots of nice people and had fun times. My favorite memory was DDR in the games room. Met a whole bunch of people who were watching me play.

    >>What/Who was it that got you to cosplay?
Realizing that I can go to Anime Boston 2007.

    >>What was your first cosplay that you ever did?
Harooohi. Yeah. For some reason it didn't occur to me that I can cosplay even without going to a con.

    >> Do you think you've improved greatly since then?
Heck yes. The first costume, I never pre-washed or ironed anything, and it was basically cutting a hole in a Hanes T-shirt and HAND-sewing the collar and stuff on. I don't know why I was proud of the costume when I made it.

    >> What was your first con like?
Anime Boston 2007 was overwhelming, and I didn't realize the usefulness of taking the con schedule book and simply circling every interesting event at the beginning of the day. I was running between my table in the Artists' Alley, practicing the Haruhi dance with my friends, and attempting to navigate through the Dealers' Room. I ended up feeling like I missed a lot of the con and never having time to do anything.

    >>What was a favorite memory of said con?
Dancing the Haruhi dance with my friends. They made the con great.
    >> Anonymous 06/24/09(Wed)00:37 No.1930076
Got into cosplay because my friends at the time yelled at me to do it.
First cosplay was Nagi from Weiss Kreuz. I greatly regret it, as it was terrible.
    I've improved IMMENSELY since then.
First con was Otakon 2002. I forget most of it, but I remember being in total awe of the dealer's room, so that's probably my favorite memory.

I know, right? BTW..this is totally random..but we kinda used to know each other (I won't say who I am for the sake of anon) but we haven't really talked in a few years but..do you still go by Sugar or do you prefer Swiper? (Or your real name..which I also won't say)

PS: Your costumes have defiantly improved over the years. Your stuff always impresses me

    >Who got you to cosplay?

My friend was into cosplay and decided I looked like Ed from FMA. Which I did not, retrospectively. Glasses and braces do not make for good cosplay. At least I was short.

    >First cosplay?

Ed from FMA. I ended up making the automail, too. It was fun. Looked like shit, but it was fun.

    >Improvement?

YES. Thank god. Ed was pretty much closet cosplay.

    >First con?

ALA3. It was hectic but so much fun. My favorite memory is either going to masquerade (there were a few decent skits that I still remember screaming over) or playing DDR with some manga author.

Oh god. I didn't have any pictures of my first costume, so this topic actually inspired me to look through old Sakura Con 2003 galleries just to find a picture to show exactly how horrific it was. Probably gonna regret this, but whatever.

    >What/Who was it that got you to cosplay?
A friend told me that an anime con existed in Seattle (I had no idea these things even existed), so a few of us all got together and went down. The girl that originally suggested it ended up getting grounded and didn't come....heh.

    >What was your first cosplay that you ever did?
Sango (pic related) I was about....15? Maybe?

    >Do you think you've improved greatly since then?
Oh god yes. Saying that I'm a million times better might in fact be an understatement. Of course, one should hope that if you stick with a hobby for 6 years, you're going to get better.....

    >What was your first con like? / What was a favorite memory of said con?
I think the first con I went to was the best I've ever been. My friends and I, who were normally nerdy outcasts at school, felt such a wondrous sense of belonging. Everyone was so friendly! Everywhere you walked people would be making nerdy jokes that no normal person would understand!...That wonder wore off for all the future cons I attended.

    >What/Who was it that got you to cosplay?
A friend told me about Anime Boston and mentioned that people usually dressed up. I didn't want to be the nub who didn't have a costume.

    >What was your first cosplay that you ever did?
Ranma-chan from Ranma 1/2, ghetto-tastic. I did manga version since I wasn't allowed to dye my hair, just tied it back into a braid and tossed on a Chinese dress with a gold sequin dragon on the front since I saw a lot of pictures of Ranma with dragons.

    >Do you think you've improved greatly since then?
Oh god yes. From that costume I had my grandmother help me make one and slowly started teaching myself. I started using wigs, managed to learn how to apply make up... I've made leaps and bounds but there is always room for improvement.

    >What was your first con like?
I went with a friend and her family, my parents gave me some cash to spend. I met a lot of people, fell in love with the masquerade, and learned that a pretty dress will get as many pictures as a well made Chihiro costume (which my friend was wearing). I kept going, so obviously had a great time.

    >What was a favorite memory of said con?
The masquerade, it was an inspiration to me to make better costumes and introduced me to some series I hadn't even heard of. Good times.

what is with cgl and asking questions!!!

my friend Phoenix got me into it when i was in 10th grade, my first cosplay was Azure Kite.

I think i have improved vastly but not in the fields i wish I could be in. (i still don't have my own machine nor can i use one very well.)

my first con ever was amazing. it was one day at AX 2005 and i was tripping balls. I got so much free stuff.

my favorite memory was going to a booth that had Phantom brave Bonus Soundtrak CDs and I asked the guy if i could have one cus it said "FREE CDS". He told me that i had to buy shirts and i had no money on me at that point (spent it on other shit) so as i walked away he said "hey kid, here" and tossed me the CD. Also when bandai was throwing away free crap i caught a GITS soundtrack that someone had grabbed but in the process he put his elbow in my ice cream, so i gave him the stink eye as he realized it and he let go.
