Unless someone can prove me wrong (and I welcome it; I don't like holes in my theories), Kurohime started the whole "Witch Gunslinger" craze: before Bayonetta, before Bullet Witch. The setting might be different than in Bayonetta, but that's a good thing in Kurohime's case, considering it takes place in a bizarre mix of feudal Japan and the Wild West.

The first couple of volumes might be kinda generic, but keep reading and you'll be glad you stuck with it.

So the story kinda goes like this:

Kurohime is the world's most powerful Witch Gunslinger. She challenged the gods and lost. As punishment, she was changed into a powerless child and cannot return to her original form until she finds true love.

Along the way, she is accompanied by Zero, a boy 10 years ago she once saved, who grew up to be a lightning-fast (and adorably moe) gunslinger.

Shit happens along the way. Other characters include a perverted warlord/lizard creature, an emo goth God of Death with detached arms and legs, a whale that can send you back in time if it swallows you, a bishie man whose genitals were stolen by a jealous blind woman, and a bloodthirsty shinigami-vampire-werewolf girl.
