Secondly, this has been in the works for several months - since she is not a Florida resident anymore and since she is also no longer a minor, it took a while to get off the ground. That it happened so close to the con is, surprisingly, entirely coincidental and, depending on whose side you're on, either really shitty or very awesome timing.

Finally, there is indeed proof: the detective heading the case managed to get a confession from Roy on tape (both video and audio) at the police station.

And yes, the victim is planning on coming to the hearing.

All in all, none of this bodes well for the accused, no matter which way you slice it. It's a crime regardless of any other opinion, etc. and he should have known better than to even attempt to sleep with her. It's all a PR nightmare now.

i moved here from cali a few years back and, after being spoiled with ax and fanime, I found jacon , kunicon and even metro to be really shitty events. I stopped going to FL cons and now just save up to go back to cali once a year for AX.

So many nice and good Florida cosplayers go unnoticed because the jerks around here like Tom Croom are so loud and obnoxious. Getting too close to certain cliques, IE people who run most of the cons around here, is a tremendous pitfall.

From personal experience, when I was a noob, I tried to become friends with certain "good" FL cosplayers around here because I genuinely admired them. When I was written off, I didn't start any drama or acted like a retard. I simply accepted that they weren't worthy of being friends with, and did my own thing. I eventually found a better crowd to hang out with, and now that I have gained recognition for my costumes and congenial attitude, surprise surprise, I'm constantly getting posted on 4chan and having shit thrown my way when I do well in costume contests.

See, this news sort of surprises me, and sort of doesn't. I was one of those "original" girls who helped start Metrocon, WAAAAAY back when, before metrocon existed, and we were just focusing on the anime aspect of Necronomicon. I was a minor then too, and Roy always made suggestive comments, flirted with all of the girls, and made "i'd try to get with you if you were 18" comments all the time. But he never actually tried to do anything with anyone under 18. But once we were all 18, he started getting closer to one of the girls, but luckily she was able to get that to stop before it actually became a serious issue. But she was 18.

I knew about this current situation before it hit the news the other day. I believe it happened, but I know it wasn't rape. It was consented, albeit underage. I personally was never victim to the web of Roy, but I know how easy it can be to get sucked into it, become the center of attention, and feel popular, well-liked and envied by others. So it's not surprising that this happened. I don't know what the court will say. Roy isn't a bad person at all, he just never knew how to deal with his feelings well. He didn't do what he did for the sexual pleasure or the idea of doing it with an underage girl as opposed to one of legal age. He had other deeper feelings for the girl, and it caused him to do things he knew he shouldn't do, but did anyway.

Im sure this never would have come up again if had actually been laid to rest, but since he and other people just couldn't leave it alone, now we are seeing the consequences.

I hope Metrocon continues in the following years because I have been around since before its birth, and I'd be sad to see something that grew so much just vanish. Good luck Metrocon.

It wasn't until after I started winning contest after contest that people posted me. Even then it was mainly to complain that I get too many awards. That's Florida, though.

AFO is the shit. You probably haven't heard it brought up on here because it's actually a good con. Megacon's nothing but a giant dealer's room (though they do have some good stuff), Super Con's just a sloppy amalgamation of nerdiness (which would normally be a good thing but no), and all the other cons just fail in general. If you're looking for a good con, go to AFO.

Another reason why you probably haven't heard mention of it is because it's not that big. Then again, that's one of the perks. Remember what happened to Metrocon when IT got big.

But I'm optimistic about Zonacon. Who knows; maybe it'll be the con to save Florida. I'll be sure to let you guys know how it goes.

When exactly did Metrocon "get big"? Here's the "official" attendance figures:

Though no figures are available for last year, it's seems likely they were no less than 2007--maybe a few hundred more. METROCON became the biggest anime con in FL in 2005 in it's third year, the same year it moved to the convention center. If you feel it's "big" because if its venue, keep in mind that Metrocon staff could not find a hotel in the Tampa Bay area with a reasonable price tag. I'd be interested in how you'd make a small/mid-size con like Metrocon feel small and intimate, since that's what you crave...

Anyone in this thread saying AFO is worth going to is a lying sack of shit. No one has cared about AFO since 2003. The costume contest is run by Kim the Cheater, Tom Croom walks around like he owns the place, the halls are so small and cramped that it is actually a rule that you are not allowed to stand still unless sandwiched against a wall, and the list goes on and on. There is a reason the AFO attendance decreases year after year. Remember when their costume contest was capped? Last year there were only forty or so entries and the quality was pure shit. People bring their good costumes elsewhere and the top florida cosplayers rarely attend.

Umm... I've gone to AFO every year since AFO two and have always had a blast. Yea they're cramped but at least they're in a hotel so I don't have to worry about getting kicked out of the con at 10pm, and all of my stuff is kept right there. Most cons cap their contests, Megacon, Jacon, Hell I belive Metro even caps. It's to keep the event from running over and keeps shit running on time, which the AFO events are great at. Sounds like you're just taking anime cons WAY too seriously.
