ITT people that hire others to make their costumes and whether we approve or not.

On one hand, I prefer it to having to see people that can't sew becoming walking abortions for a weekend. On the other, they have like...No honor and less shame. How can you even do it?

    Pic probably isn't related

Assuming you're talking about people who pay someone to make a costume for them, not just getting friends to make it. And not people who just commission portions of a costume, like props.

I don't care about it as long as they give credit for who made it, and don't try to claim they made it themselves. If they compete in it, it shouldn't be a costume they didn't make the majority of (IE, eBay or fully commissioned), and they need to credit the portions they didn't make. Unless it's a skit, since those aren't really judged based on costumes anyway.

That's been the general consensus every time a thread like this has come up in the past.

I don't mind it, but people who avoid crediting others really tick me off. They mention the commissioner maybe once and then go on as though they made it themselves, beating around the bush to avoid dropping names and carrying themselves as if they made everything.

Yep, this, pretty much. If you're not entering a competition and just want to wear a nice costume for the weekend and have fun, but lack the time and/or sewing skills to make a costume you like, then why shouldn't you commission it? As long as you're sure to credit the person you commissioned it from in the first place whenever necessary then there's no problem.

As someone who gets everything via commissions, just how often ARE we supposed to give credit? Obviously if I put it online I'll mention who made it. And if someone asks if I made something I'll let them know who did, but I'm not gonna bring it up every time someone says "hey nice costume"

    Waaa... Waaa... Waaaa.....
Since I'm poor, stupid and too fucking lazy to learn how to sew, I'll just ass-bleed about it here that one girl that makes my lame shit look bad....

I think if anyone starts to talk in-depth about your costume, you should probably tell them. Maybe if someone offers to take your picture.
    >> Anonymous 06/11/09(Thu)08:40 No.1896765
In Japan, it's MUCH more common and much less derided for people to comission costumes or just get them store-bought. Chances are the only people who will whine about it are those who don't yet have the talent/friends to have good costumes themselves anyway.

LULWUT? How exactly should they "carry themselves"? Should they walk with their heads bowed in shame all the time - so you and you friends can follow them and shout "SCUM! SCUM!" at them?

You should. A quick "I got it from this excellent seamtress _______" wouldn't kill you.
    or
"Thanks a bunch, I'll let the maker know."

2 secs out of your life.

Because everyone here in the US thinks you made it if you omit that. It's sad but true and if you don't want to somehow get caught in a "omg she didn't make that? She didn't tell me, dirty little liar" down the road you should say it.

People aren't nice, especially teens, and if you don't say it first you stand a good chance of it coming to bite you on the ass.

I make no secret that i get my costumes commissioned. I'd rather pay a little bit extra to get a well made costume from someone who knows what their doing, rather than waste time and money on something that i know i'll never be able to make myself due to lack of skill and time.
I just like wearing the costumes and have no intention to compete; its just a bit of fun for me. I'd make my own but patterns scare me....
