I think most cons forbid the use of paddles now, I know AX does. Common etiquette would say to ask before you run up and hug someone, which again most people do. I get the feeling anyone that asks to hug you is gonna give you a creepy vibe, regardless of how they look.

But.

If you're scared, don't do it. It's as simple as that. If you've been to any con before at all, you should know what the atmosphere is like, and if not, it's not like someone's going to tear your pants off and rape you right there on the show floor.

You only live once dude. If you get the chance to throw on a costume and have a little fun, my philosophy is go for it. Cons are always more fun in costume, just be ready for people wanting your picture.

Good lord keep in mind the picture thing. If you're dressed at all out of the ordinary, people will stop you to take your picture. The better the costume, the more stops you'll be making.
