755 KB How old is too old Anonymous 05/20/09(Wed)11:04 No.1841678
So I just graduated from college this week, and it's sprung the question of how long can you cosplay before you're too old.
    so...
    how old is too old?
how old are you (trying to get an average here)
to the somewhat older cosplayers, are you ever afraid of employers finding out about your hobby? do you hide it?
    >> Soni !!qeHmeAJM1a2 05/20/09(Wed)11:11 No.1841682
older cosplayers tend to "graduate" to more adullt oriented cons, or just quit. but its simply a matter when enough is enough. I'm turning 23 this year and there have been moments over the 8 years in this hobby that makes me want to say fuck it all. As for employers, I cant really do much about it cause googling my name brings up news article. thankfully, my major is forgiving.

I didn't even start cosplaying until I entered college.

I'm 27 now. And I'm going to keep cosplaying well into my 40's, mark my words.

As for employers, if they find out, they find out. Oh well.

When I'm 60 I'll cosplay Admiral Adama from BSG.
    >> Anonymous 05/20/09(Wed)11:28 No.1841701
I didn't cosplay until I graduated college. Now I'm 28. Yes, I hide it from my coworkers, although I'm happy to talk about "sewing" just not costumes. It's just practical, and not all the areas of my life need to bleed into each other.

Do it! And let the English see you do it!

I'm sure I'll cosplay until I'm old. I've always wanted to do Gandalf, and I feel I won't do it justice till I'm about 80 years old.

This, cept i started in high school.

Probably the most enjoyable hobby i've ever been a part of and I don't plan on leaving it any time soon.
    >> Anonymous 05/20/09(Wed)11:57 No.1841750
I'm 30; most people I know think it's awesome that I make my own costumes and cosplay. It's no one's buisness what you do on your own time; you must be fairly young to be worrying what co-workers and employers will think of what you do after working hours. They can't do anything to you at work just because you like costumes. If someone you worked with was into theater on weekends, would it matter? Nope.

As for "how old is too old", I think it's all up to the cosplayer. I am not too old for cosplay, but anime cons are too young and kid-centric / immature for me, so I won't be attending any more. They just aren't fun for me, screaming kids / 20-something females who wish they were gay males IRL. Too much retardation at anime cons for me, so instead I will check out fantasy / sci-fi cons. They seem more adult to me.

I said once that I'd consider going to Anime North again if there was an event for adults/ 19+ attendees. (i.e. A licensed dance for 19+ ONLY, NO FUCKING SCREAMING KIDS. The super rabid retards who are 19+ would never attend an adult event, so you wouldn't have to worry about them, either.) I got a reply pointing out that there is a hentai room. /facepalm

Im 19. Im sorta afraid of cosplaying too much because of my future career plans. It could kinda wreck my credibility in the far off future.

No I dont plan on announcing what Im studying at the moment.
    >> Anonymous 05/20/09(Wed)13:05 No.1841874
I've been conning and cosplaying since I was 17. I'm 21 now and definitely feel like I'm among the "older crowd", plus 21 is when teen girls start calling you "creepy" for being within 10 feet of them.

I can't imagine myself going to cons after I turn 25. By then I'll be career-oriented and probably turn down my power level.
    >> Anonymous 05/20/09(Wed)13:11 No.1841891
I'm 20, and I don't worry about my co-workers finding out. If they do, it probably wouldn't matter.

And my mom, who's 45, is in SCA and makes her own court dresses, so it doesn't really matter how old you are.

Same. I started when I was 16 and am now 24. This hobby has made me good friends and good times.
The feeling I get when I make a costume I'm really proud of is something I can't easily recreate in everyday life. I'm not gonna stop until I can't lift a needle anymore.

What is with the fascination with this question?

Quit cosplaying when it's not fun anymore. Age is irrelevant. You might want to change venues as you get older though.
    >> Anonymous 05/20/09(Wed)13:32 No.1841935
    Started when I was 15, now 27.
    >> Anonymous 05/20/09(Wed)13:33 No.1841942
don't stop just because of your age or what co-workers will think of you. if they don't accept you then they're probably not the type of people you want to be friends with anyway.

if you're still SO stuck on creating a certain image for yourself and your career then get involved in the business end of a con. instead of enjoying participating maybe you can enjoy helping create a certain con.

but seriously, it doesn't matter how old you are as long as you love it and as long as you carry yourself with confidence in the business world you'll be fine. in fact, i've found that saying i cosplay or am interested in all that stuff has shown others that i have a personality and has helped in the business world rather than hurt. having said that, i do live in San Francisco, the most liberal city in the US, lol.

Strange. No one's ever called me creepy for cosplaying, and I've been cosplaying for 10 years. My first anime con was when I was freshly 19 at AX99.

I've never in person been called creepy for my age and my hobby. Only in threads like this. It's easy to be judgmental on the internet.
    >> Anonymous 05/20/09(Wed)14:10 No.1842036
I was 10 when I went to my first con, 12 when I started cosplaying and I am now 23 and still doing just that. I guess the worst part is now with work, expenses, and everything, I'm lucky to get one new cosplay finished per con, when I was younger I ALWAYS had three. Another thing that kinda sucks being older is there are characters that I've wanted to cosplay and have yet to, but If I dont do it soon I'm eventually going to get to the point that I dont feel it appropriate for me to cosplay that character anymore.

Something that has been on my mind, is why AREN'T more adult aimed anime cons popping up? I mean, Thinking about it, A lot of people in my generation and older 20 somethings were the first wave of younger fans attending Anime cons when they started showing up, so why hasn't that happened yet? Our only option is to continue going to all age anime cons or scifi cons, which I can deal with, but I would love to have an anime con geared toward my generation of fans without the newer breed of anime fan because, lets face it, there is a huge difference. On a personal level I also dont know if I like the idea of migrating to scifi cons. Since I'm not a general scifi fan cons like that don't really offer me the same events or experiences that I get out of an anime convention.
    >> Anonymous 05/20/09(Wed)14:26 No.1842068
I've been cosplaying since I about 12 and I'm 18 now. I still love it.

I think cosplay ends when YOU fell too old to cosplay or you just don't enjoy it anymore. Otherwise, it's just a silly hobby and there are characters for all ages.

I think the problem with adult anime cons is mostly the thought that it MUST have SEX as a mainstay. Or that's the stupid assumption and perception of it all.

Some think that just because there's nothing going on that'd be indecent for kids, that means kids shouldn't be excluded.

There's also the fact that most older con goers naturally fall out of the pasttime or move on to different cons anyways so demand... blah.

I'd love to have less weeaboos around me at cons.
    >> Anonymous 05/20/09(Wed)17:07 No.1842572
    >>1842077
Yeah, I was definitely aiming more for the idea of a regular anime con (without being sexually oriented) that excluded, lets say...21 and under? I think a lot of the reason older fans do opt out of going to cons isn't because they stop having fun but because they are uncomfortable being surround by a bunch of underage, unsupervised, immature, shrieking children. If they had a venue filled with mostly like minded, civilized (to a point) human being, they'd probably still attend. There are more then enough all age cons out there, if people are going to make a big deal about excluded from one or two 21+ cons, oh well, they'll get over it.
    >> Anonymous 05/20/09(Wed)17:13 No.1842590
I started when I was about 10, and I'm now 20. I love cosplaying and costuming in general. And as for employers, I work at a costume shop where one of the reasons I was hired is the fact that I cosplay.
