Hey! Does /cgl/ have any info on the rumor of Otakon possibly (emphasis on POSSIBLY) moving to the Pennsylvania Convention Center?

Not going to happen. The hotels have already been announced and are mostly sold out.
    >> Anonymous 04/26/09(Sun)17:11 No.1796033
It isn't happening this year at least. Or if it is a lot of people are going to be fucking pissed.

I doubt this is true, but for totally selfish reason I hope it is anyway.

well yeah obviously it won't happen this year,..but the rumor was that it would happen later on after the PA convention center was done being expanded.
    >> Anonymous 04/26/09(Sun)17:57 No.1796121
why would they move? Seems like they've 'max out' at 20k people. Plus B'more is a nice centrally located east coast city.

well i think because anime boston suddenly jumped in the number of attendees last year that if that happens to them, they might move to the pa one because its supposed to be the biggest convention center on the east coast when it's done remodeling and shit

well that's a long way off.

Um, Haynes can easily handle AB even if it grew to Otakon size.

    >Easily handle

Do you remember the lines? If there happens to be another line like that or close to that and there are that many people... there would be a wait of over 12 hours. I had to wait 9 and a half hours to get my badge on Friday.

    Fuuuuuck that.
    >> Misa !pGt6/pVDLk 04/26/09(Sun)23:18 No.1796824
I've been hearing this rumor for years, imo the PACC could handle the sheer size of Otakon. I think the main things holding the con back from moving it there were 1) The PACC is mad expensive, 2) there are not nearly enough hotels in the area to house all of the con goers, staff, guests, etc. Plus compared to the Inner Harbor, that section of Philly is extremely cramped.
    >> Anonymous 04/26/09(Sun)23:23 No.1796852
    >>1796178
Bullshit. Think of the food court attached too. It's packed as it is, it would be standing room only if it got to Otakon size.

the lines weren't a size issue. The lines were a staff error issue. They had been fine the previous years until this year when they stuck a thumb up their pooper and stood around saying "DURHURR, WAT DO WE DOO NOWWW?"

Expect PAX East to be Otakon size and they don't seem to be worried.

Every source has said they've drastically overhauled reg this year and even brought in a professional company to handle it. The probs have been solved, you whiners need to stop crying over LINECON '08.
    >> BigDumbHippy 04/27/09(Mon)00:11 No.1797196
as somebody from philly. I'm for this. There's the reading terminal market (a giant food court) next to it. A train and subway station built in, and its in the center of philly.
    >> it came from /m/ 04/27/09(Mon)00:14 No.1797214
As much as I've longed for Philly to get a good con so I can have a home con... this, no. Baltimore makes Otakon, the drive is great, the Aquarium and the food is all great. Obviously the amount of hotels is important.

Can you imagine a ton of anime con-goers flooding Reading Terminal for lunch? Those poor Amish dudes would lose it.

This. Have you been to the Reading Terminal during Wizard World or that Cheerleading Conference that takes place every year? That place is a bitch to navigate even on a Saturday afternoon.

Oh shut up Eilonnwy. Way to prove you can't fucking handle registration lines and had to pass it off to people who have half a clue
    >> Anonymous 04/27/09(Mon)00:41 No.1797347
Otakon needs to stay a BCC, having it anywhere else just won't make it Otakon. That building, the very building itself it a staple of the convention. Its not like all these other conventions where you can move them anywhere.

I'm not whining. I had no delay getting my badge since I worked dealer last year, and I'm doing it again this year. But whether it affected me directly or not,it was a shit job they did handling the reg and lines.
    >> Anonymous 04/27/09(Mon)06:51 No.1798070
Philly does have better local public transportation. SEPTA > MTA. Driving is another matter
    >> Bailmox !kA.fCtgZRo 04/27/09(Mon)07:13 No.1798075
    >>1798070
and I thought it was hard to be more shit than SEPTA.

Anyway, it'd be closer to me so I wouldn't complain but the hotel and cramp issue kill it no questions. Definitely content with Baltimore.
    >> Anonymous 04/27/09(Mon)08:38 No.1798127
they should move to the gaylord center like katsucon.

Actually I've worked at Wizard World and had to run food to my employers several times and it was a nightmare!
The subway in Philly is great most of the time, the buses not so much. Either way, I prefer getting out of Philly.
    >> LRC !HG6fkGXhas 04/27/09(Mon)12:20 No.1798360
I have a burning hatred for Philly, so I would be quite sad if it moved there. Inner Harbor is so nice, Philly is such a dirty, cramped city. Center City is a pain in the assssss to get around, the Subways are disgusting and filled with bums and pee and there's no parking anywhere nearby that isn't $20+ dollars a day, plus the aforementioned not-enough-hotels-in-the-area problem.

I would cry if Otakon moved to Philly. :(
    >> Anonymous 04/27/09(Mon)12:35 No.1798378
Retarded thirteen year old raver children are better off running around near Inner Harbor than Philly, odd as that is to say.

I think the con is much better seated in Baltimore. The city already knows what it is, businesses handle it well enough, hotels are prepared. It'd be a rough move and perhaps threatening to leave may make Balitmore give them more incentives to stay (considering the con brings in a surplus of cash for just 3-4 days).
    >> Flipster 04/27/09(Mon)12:42 No.1798388
It won't be completed till 2011 anyways....
    >> Flipster 04/27/09(Mon)12:55 No.1798395
The proximity to chinatown is a plus though, and with each continuing year more hotels are growing in the center city area. By 2012 there will most likely be enough hotel space to accomadate a full convention center.
You can't expect the city a pacc would spend millions of dollars on expansion without thinking of hotel space for patrons.

I dunno, it sounds like they're pretty good at screwing a good thing over. Renovating LOVE park (right as the X-Games came to town nonetheless) being the one I think of the most. Followed closely by PhillyCarShare now charing MONTHLY RATES (albeit this isn't a city gov't problem, it's still retarded).

As much as I'd love to have a large con like Otakon come to Philly I just think it wouldn't work.
    >> Misa !pGt6/pVDLk 04/27/09(Mon)14:02 No.1798474
    >>1798070

Shittier than SEPTA? Shock lol. Taking the subway is quicker than taking the bus, but compared to other cities (i.e., NY) it's not as efficient. I have to take a 40 minute bus from where I live to get to the BSL. :/

As if I hadn't lost complete faith in SEPTA already, the worst day in my 20 years of living here had to be the day of the Phillies parade. Sort of an unbalanced comparison, but it just goes to show how much this city is ill-equipped to handle extremely large crowds.

Also, I'm thinking of all of the hotels downtown and loling at the idea of a bunch of con goers staying at The Bellevue or the Loewes.
