Not important if it still looks good. But then, most people have no idea how to to take care of or style their hair, so... I can see where you're coming from, sort of.

    Anyway, OP's question:

Social ineptitude. A con badge is not a license to act like an idiot, nor is it your ticket into someone else's personal space. Also, SHOWER.

As for cosplay specifically... satin/shiny shit. DONT USE IT. The proper use of shiny is very, very limited, and no one seems to get that right. And two, press your damn seams. It takes about 30 seconds, and it makes your work look SO much neater. Goddamn.

I was in a photo shoot once and everyone was keeping a good distance away from the cosplayers. Then this one bitch with a HUGE hate came in, got in front of EVERYONE taking pictures and just started snapping away.

    >>1792063
I think that's because it's usually a case of the person being too cheap to buy a wig - in which case, they've no doubt skimped on other parts of the costume. Also, there aren't many anime/game characters that have 'normal' hair. There are a few costumes out there where using your natural hair would be totally appropriate and do-able (FFX's Yuna, for example)... but most of them fall into the "why would you even try that?" category, such as, say, the ever-popular Ichigo.

tl;dr depends on the costume and the person in it. The story of cosplay.

As a general rule of thumb, I hate anyone at a con who is in high-school or middle-school and isn't in a costume of some sort, because, generally, they are the ones who will start the most bitchy drama, like demand glomps and then turn into a vapid cunt when you deny them their free ticket to grope your ass.

As a side note, I have only met two people at a con who have been attending public schools and did not follow said rule of thumb, but they were both seniors, and fa/tg/uys.

I wear glasses, and I try to take them off anytime anyone gets a photo, or when I'm walking around the main floor. But if I'm shopping in the Artist's Alley or Dealer's room, I want to be able to see what I'm up to.

On the same note: photos in Dealer's Room/Artist's Alley. I'm trying to shop or talk to my artist friends.

And flashbombing. I hate having my picture taken without my knowledge. Just ASK me. I'm in a silly costume, pictures are gonna happen. It's not a big deal. Seconding (or however many-ing) the concept of people taking candid shots without you asking.

A lot of times at cons I'll just be sitting around chillin' and spot a camera pointed at me and ask if they'd like a picture before they can snap a deer-in-the-headlights shot. I don't know why people are always so hesitant to take pictures of cosplayers and resort to candid shots--chances are, if I'm wearing something, I'm okay with getting my picture taken in it. There's no need to take a crappy picture of me from twelve feet away behind a fake plant in a hotel lobby.

Another pet peeve of mine is people who make up weird nicknames for the characters you're cosplaying and only refer to you as those. I was known as "Chocolate Duo" at Youmacon by one girl, even though neither I nor Duo Maxwell are black or made of chocolate.
    >> Anonymous 04/24/09(Fri)23:21 No.1792793
    >>1792753

I've had the nickname thing happen to me once before. I was cosplaying Envy, and a girl cosplaying Sloth decided I was her daughter and she was my "con mommy". The worst thing about this is that she would keep calling me "Envy" whenever we hung out OUTSIDE of the con, which was often, because it turns out she lived down the street from me.

    Pet peeves:
Half done costumes or people who run around in underwear, or basically nude except for a towel/cape, etc.
    Too much fangirling.
People who act too smug to even seem they enjoy what they're doing. why be at a con if you're gonna just be an asshole and either not talk or look at someone weird. Or those who just think they're better. And those that are just too hyper and loud, or just act stupid cause they're at a con. C'mon, act mature enough to not get yourself and everyone in trouble. that's why most cons are banning signs and whatever else.
Someone's who TOO big for a cosplay. I'm not skinny, but I'm not gonna let everyone see the bakery. (lawl.rolls)
Like most posts, random pics taken without asking or without your knowing, basically being felt up or being countlessly harassed or hit on.
And everything else that has named, non-showering, substituting an item for something that's either cheaper or nothing to do with the outfit. Non wigs, or wigs that are either TOO bright or just wrong, not styled or very cheap. the ones that have that horrible spriggy deal going on?

if you're good at doing your hair, what's wrong with this? alot of wigs look terribly fake and obvious. good ones are godly, but i don't get what makes natrual hair a no-no

what makes it take more effort, if it doesn't involve dying/cutting hair drastically? are wigs easier to style?
i know nothing of wigs, forgive me, lol. may possibly be cosplaying a character with similar hair to mine and i have no experience with wigs, but alot with styling my own hair, so i dunno if i should spend the money on one.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I generally try to ask for a picture with and without glasses if the person wears them and looks cute in them. That and I don't bring the hate-o-rade to alternate costumes either, and while they haven't been mentioned yet I'll also step in to defend wearing kimonos at conventions and if it looks really good, use your own natural hair. Yeah, I went there.

I hate it when people are clearly violating the convention's dress code and no one says anything to them. SakuraCon is really pretty lenient, their only limit is it has to be equivalent to a NON-thong bathing suit. But I see some chick running around in buttfloss and no one says anything =|

But it's like Halloween basically, some girls treat it like an excuse to put on the sluttiest thing imaginable and walk around in public. (By the way, if I didn't know who the character of Yoko was, and I passed someone on the street dressed like her, I would immediately assume she was a prostitute.)

Unfortunately I only ever go to cons that are overrun with weaboos that think it's cool to be the goffik or Kingdom Heart versions of something. Stupid Northwest only having two cons a year I can actually get to...

It's gotten to the point where I just kinda expect it, though. I've only ever gotten one wrong, and that was "Human-form Akatsuki member version of Amaterasu from Ookami". I called her "Genderbender Akatsuki Haseo".

People who don't seem to have even thought of looking at reference photos of the character they hope to cosplay. Or people that buy whatever fabrics they can find, even if it doesn't work, and they use it anyway for the costume. It isn't even that the costume construction is crap. Sometimes they do a great job making the costume be the color choices and fabrics f' it all up.

I can't STAND people who come up and invade your space at cons. Especially when they do shit like touch/stroke a really nice, expensive wig that you do NOT want ruined.

Absolutely, but while one of the fundamental tenants of engineering is to make designs economical, I DO NOT build crap -- in part due to my pride as an engineer, but also because honestly...you can build crap by yourself. YOU tell me what you want, I come back with a "bare minimum" design which I consider adequate, and we can work up (but never down!) from there in terms of price and features.

I have a day job that keeps me very busy, so I typically only work on 1-2 designs at a time. I never accept a commission I'm not prepared for the buyer to flake on and typically run a two to three week turn (depending on complexity) from sketches to delivery.
