My mom is the one who taught me how to sew in the first place! Now I make my costumes 100% on my own and she couldn't be more proud of me :)

My mommy pays for my fabric.
But thats mostly because she works at the fabric store and gets a good discount. Shes really supportive, taught me how to sew and still helps me with things when I get stuck.
My dad couldn't care less. He does get interested when I have weird props to make, however.
    >> Anonymous 04/21/09(Tue)19:33 No.1785198
My mother thinks it's kinda cool, but when I spend more than a week on a costume (even if it's for a school function/grade) she calls it my stupid obsession.

My dad's cool with it. Back in high school when he took me to my first con I bound for crossplay and he looked down at where my boobs had been, looked back up at me, poked the uniboob once and said "Don't crack a rib" and that was the end of any and all opposition from him.

they're fine with the sewing and dressing up for photoshoot part.

I think they'd be opposed to con hopping, but that's why they have absolutely no idea how much I travel.

It took almost 5 years before my dad realized I could sew, however, and it was literally *looks at new jacket hanging to dry* Why did you buy that? - I didn't, I made it - You can sew?* Now I have to do alterations for him, my mom, my brothers etc on a whim. Oh well, it's good practice.
    >> Soni !!qeHmeAJM1a2 04/21/09(Tue)19:38 No.1785211
My parents were impartial to it, to the point they didn't like it cause of several things. 1. Took time away from schoolwork. 2. Messed the house up. 3. Never paid off with cash prizes.

But when I got a trip to Japan cause of WCS, holy shit, they changed their tune so goddamn fast. "My daughter is a national champion" is what my pops would say to practically everyone and I would be in the corner just muttering, "For costuming, its not that big of a deal." My mom's always been more of the schoolwork type so she didn't care as long as I was doing well in school. Kinda still works like that. I cut down dramatically, so they've been off my case for a bit.

My mum thinks it's cool and always likes looking at my latest projects. I don't think my dad really understands it as a hobby but he doesn't disapprove of it. So I'm good all round.

my father is iffy over it. he thinks it's wierd - but as long as he doesn't have to see it or any of the pictures he doesn't care.

I'm trying to con dad into cosplay as the Ox King, too, so I can do Budokai!Chichi or something.

My mum thinks it takes me away from uni work too much... Which is right, but she doesn't really mind. I think she's proud of my end results, though, since she always wants pictures of what I've made to send to relatives...

My dad kinda trolls me a bit, haha, he goes on about how China should have the sweatshops for our clothes, not the other way around... These days I just ignore him and inwardly seethe. I know he's joking so it doesn't /really/ bother me, it's the fact he feels like he has to take the piss that does (especially when I've had one of those days where I'm raging over mistakes in a costume).

Oh, and my brother is a prep so I'm hidden from his friends view at all costs.

    >>1785235
That is awesome. My dad /kinda/ reminds me of Ganondorf - especially his stature, hair and how fucking tall he is - so I'm always tempted to ask him whether he'd wear anything I made....
(Thankfully I didn't inherit his looks, ahaha...)
    >> Anonymous 04/21/09(Tue)21:45 No.1785498
I really don't talk about it much? My brother went to a con as a TF2 engineer and my mom thought that was kinda neat. I don't think my dad cared.
I think they'd trip balls if I ever went as a character I'd want to. Too... promiscuous?

She loves it enough to where she wanted to wear gothic lolita stuff with us, and even cosplayed as Suigintou once. My parents like that I have such a productive hobby, my dad more than my mom. He was all over the 'clear, glowing sword' idea I had and wanted to help.

It gives him something to do (when he's not busy with his other hobby (making jewelry)), and I think he likes the whole "Father Daughter Bonding" thing.

My folks have never been too keen in it, seeing it not as very productive... which is amusing since I do so many productive things with my time (4chan excluded) that I deserve a fun, pointless hobby.

My mother almost had hope that I was finally quitting but I just informed her that I'm quitting anime cons for sci-fi cons. Cosplay isn't out of my system, just congoers.

My mom loves that it lead to me sewing. She's a sewing/craft nut, and I'm her only daughter. She's FINALLY given up getting me to do native american stuff (she was cultural director of our tribe here in indiana so she's uber into that stuff) so I guess she was just happy I got into SOMETHING close to what she loves to do.

She expressed pleasure at me asking for help on a dress a couple years back. She doesn't get why I keet dressing up at boys. (Why? I'm FLAT. I make Lina Inverse feel GOOD about herself. That and I cosplayed Edward Elric for a couple years, then Al--I'm blond and short and and so are they! Perfect!)

My dad just tells me I'm weird and we stick our tongues out at each other.

My mom thinks it's awesome. She sewed most of her own clothes, when she was my age, as did my grandmother, etcetc. So she taught me how to sew, and she used to help me a lot -- she still does occasionally, if it's the night before a con and I'm way behind.

She's actually shown interest in cosplaying with me, too. She keeps telling me to let her know if there's any characters she could pull off. I told her I was thinking about cosplaying Terry from Batman Beyond, and when I showed her pictures from the show, she volunteered to cosplay old!Bruce. Haha.

But my mom's a wierd example, since she's into nerdy things and picks up on internet jokes from me, and things like that. I think she's also just glad that I have a non-dangerous hobby, too.

As for my dad, he thinks it's pretty cool and has been a big help when it comes to props -- I can design them, sure, but he knows what materials will work best and often points out any design flaws before I start something.

I had the unfortunate luck of not getting into cosplaying until about a year ago, and I'm going to graduate college in a month. So my family is like "right. Just make sure you get in to grad school, and try not to let your cosplay pictures make it to the hands of future employers please."
But my mom is glad that it's getting me into sewing, which she's always tried to get me into. And my dad is excited that my prop making involves use of the power tools. My sister thinks my cosplaying seals me as a social failure, but she can suck it.

I'm in Indiana. The ones that DIDN'T get shipped off the the reservation and there was lots of intermingling with the people that moved in. We lost our tribal recognition before I was born, and have been trying to get it back. The government was an ass towards us even though we've been having reunions for something like a century--I don't know, my mom paid attention to that stuff not me.

So yes, I'm a blond indian. Just like there are Black Jews.

I'm the first row of actual SEATS in the front. From the right, 4th person. Long braid and NO kid on lap.
