I used to write my own init scripts from scratch, couple years ago. And then I write my own init in C for my laptop- whos init procedure never changed- so I could hardcode the values in. Later I decided to write init in ash script, and that is what I use today. It's 50 lines and I boot in 1 1/2 seconds- on an old IBM thinkpad.

You also might want to rearrange the shutdown functions, I think halt was later moved to after root was remounted as readonly because of some problem. Just try it out and debug. You probably don't use mdev and use udev instead, so where you see "mdev -s", replace that with udev. udev takes three lines to start:
udevd --daemon
udevadm trigger
udevadm settle

This was all part of a distro that I had planned to put together. I put it together just enough for myself to use it, one day I'll actually finish it.

Backup your current init binary, mv /sbin/init /sbin/initbackup
And then save that shell script as /sbin/init, and chmod +x it.
If it crashes/doesn'twork, use init=/bin/bash on the kernel line to get into a shell to debug things.
