for the love of god take off your damn costume if you're going out to eat or if the convention is over.

    This week i have seen.

    1. 3 narutards @ walmart

    2. fucking airbender cosplayers @ a chinese buffet

as much as i like cosplay, shit like this makes me facepalm hard

I don't mind. It makes it easier to find kindred buddies. While I'm not a fan of Naruto I do see the occasional cosplay related item on someone, like a FF8 necklace or Devil May Cry Wristband and I know I can walk right up and go "Hey I like that series too."

It's not like nerds have a secret sign so we can find each other outside of cons.

I don't know, I get a kick out of it. I mean, if you're just coming from a con and plan on going right back, getting out of your costume just isn't worth the trouble.

Now, don't go waltzing into a family restaurant dressed like Cammy or some big oaf without a shirt. Put on a pair of pants or toss on a shirt, and don't lug your huge cosplay props in there with you. Leave your guns/swords in the car, take off your wings, etc.

But yeah, whenever I go to a con, I get a kick out of cosplayers that go out to eat in their costumes. And, based on my observations, the staff at the restaurants seem to think it's kind of neat, too. A little weird, perhaps... but kind of neat. I mean, it's not something you see but once a year.

Now for all of you morons that go waltzing around in full-on cosplay when there isn't a con in town, THAT makes me facepalm. There is no excuse for that level of nerdism.

agreed. part of the fun at a con is going outside the con, within reason. grabbing food in costume is acceptable. going to the mall on a thursday afternoon in full gear is just obnoxious.
but really? popping away from con for lunch, and going to cici's pizza in full Mello-with-face-scar is good times.

I'm sorry, I am not changing out of the costume I spent two hours getting into just to grab a bite to eat at the nearest restaurant, because hotel stuff is obnoxiously expensive.

If you facepalm or get angry enough to be swearing up a storm over people wearing costumes outside of the convention, you need to relax. It's not a big deal and it's not harming you. Calm down. If the restaurants had a problem with it, they'd ask the patrons to leave.

As for outside-of-convention cosplaying in public places? I will get dressed up and parade around wherever I goddamn please. Don't like it? Don't look. Simple as that.

Okay. So, it took 2 hours to put on my cosplay, and I have to change out of it to grab something to eat?

And then, if you suddenly need a staple like thread or duct tape or glue or god knows what, I have to change to dart into Wally world and get something? Please.

I've cosplayed with friends in public all the time, and although it is really cool whenever someone comes up to us and asks "OMG, Are you supposed to be ____ from ______?!?", I assure you it is not for the attention. Also, due to an elaborate taste in fashion, I'll encorporate some things I use for cosplay into everyday clothing. It's because I like the way the shit looks, not because I'm one of those "LOOK AT ME I'M DIFFERENT HURRHURR" people. I'm sick of being called an attention whore for having a fun time with my friends and dressing in a style that I love.

I don't see a problem with going to get food during the con while still in costume. Or even if the con's over and you want food -before- going back to your hotel room to change or if you don't have a hotel and want to eat before you go home. Whatever, it's not hurting anyone.

As far as cosplaying when there isn't a con in the first place, I do it with my friends all the time because we find it fun. We just do our moderate costumes of characters who wear clothing, we never bust out our giant weapons or wings for just hanging out.

If some cosplay outfits were considered as normal everyday wear as American Apparel or Hollister or something by the general public, I'd still wear them. I like the way I look in some of my costumes, so I'll wear them.

And my Bullshit Meter just blew up. Elaborate taste in fashion? Yeah, you know who has those? Girls who just have to "accessorize." Why do they do it? Because they want people to notice them. You're not going to sell me on the notion that you do it just because you like the way it looks.

    > Then what is it for? What, you can't dress in normal clothes to hang out with your friends?

Of course we'll dress in normal clothes 99% of the time. However, sometimes we'll call eachother up and say "You know who we haven't cosplayed in a while?" and meet up somewhere like the park and hang out. It's never anything super elaborate, like huge gigantic wings and whatnot. I'd assume when people see us that don't know what cosplay is they just think we have a strange fashion sense. We never cosplay anything out in public that is ridiculous and unnessecary.

    >And my Bullshit Meter just blew up. Elaborate taste in fashion? Yeah, you know who has those? Girls who just have to "accessorize." Why do they do it? Because they want people to notice them. You're not going to sell me on the notion that you do it just because you like the way it looks.

Don't be so quick to jump to conclusions. I'm a fashion design major, and I have a taste for frills and bright colours. So what, I'm not supposed to wear the clothes I'll spend hours making in public just because people will think I'm an attention whore? Fuck them. >I'm an attention-seeking whore because I like the way I look in parts of x character's outfit, and would like to get use out of the things I spend a lot of time and money on making? Grow up.

Okay, there's a difference between full-on COSPLAYING and just going out in one or two pieces of an outfit you created. I'm making a leather jacket for an upcoming costume, and it looks like something you could buy in a store. I'm going to be putting a lot of time and money into it, and I plan on wearing it as a regular-use jacket outside of cosplay. Also made a leather skirt that I absolutely love, has zippers in it and everything, and it's not something that would be marked as "weird" if I wore it out in public. Original, but not something that's going to trip geek-meters in every person I pass. When people wear their Tidus necklace or fashion their hair up like anime-character-x, that's all right. It's the people that waltz around in torn-to-shit, bright-red Vash the Stampede trenchcoats, Vincent capes, or Sailor Moon wigs that make me facepalm.

Seriously, it's all right if you wear bits and pieces of your costume out and about if they look good on you, but at least TRY to look like a socially functional human being. Don't trot about in your cute little sailor fuku because you think it's "OMG SUPA DUPA MOE MOE KAWAIIIII" on you. Wear your hair like Vash. Sport his glasses. Leave his trenchcoat at home.

I think most of the people in this thread would be totally fine with you wearing a piece of a costume here or there. Hell, I used to wear my Yuna earring around. That isn't what we're raging against - we're raging against the ones that thing Edward Elric costumes are everyday-acceptable, the ones that put Narutard's facepaint on to go to class in the morning, and basically anyone that gets decked out in the most obvious geek-tastic parts of their costume just for a trip to the mall with friends.

Whether it's part or all, I don't see why it should bother people. What is the big deal? They're having fun, they're not hurting anyone, and they obviously have the confidence to do it if they're out there doing it. Do you feel embarrassed for them or something, just because they're dressed up as something unusual?

I'm not trying to be rude. I'm just wondering: why does it matter? Why does it bother you? What's so wrong about it?

Most answers I've seen to those questions just smack of "they stand out and that's bad" but nothing... valid.

I have a friend who has a link cosplay (a well done one >_>) And she is also trappy, ppl often confuse her with a boy.

Anyways, she one sunday put her link costume on and went to the mall to just walk and have some food (both of them were wearing costumes), they chilled out.

People took pictures of them, and some pair of boys recognized her link outfit :3. They had fun, ppl too and was a different day in the mall for them and the ppl who saw them.

But you know what? There are not anime/manga cons were they live, if you say "anime" to ppl the probably would go by "what the hell is that you are talking about?".
In general, people don't friking know why the hell you are dressing like that and that is cosplay :>, much less know that you are representing a videogame/series character.

You're still hiding in a mask
    You take your fun seriously
No, don't blow this year's chance
Tomorrow your mold goes back on

    You go to work today
    You'll go to work tomorrow
    Shitfaced tonight
You'll brag about it for months

    Remember what I did
    Remember what I was
    Back on Halloween

    Why not everyday
    Are you so afraid
    What will people say
    (repeat)

And what will your girlfriend say to you
And the people out on the street they might glare at you
And whadya know you're pretty self-conscious too

I went to the park in one of my cosplays for a big meet up, we walked to the mall after that and nearly got kicked out because we weren't "dressed appropriately". I wtf'd because most of us were in clothes that just about covered everything (excluding our heads/faces, obviously)! I was wearing the most "showy" of the costumes with my lower legs, neck, and forearms showing. Made me rage because a few months prior, while eating lunch in the food court, a bunch of "Sexy No Jutsu" tween Narutards waltzed in and pretty much flashed everyone in the food court. Oh, I should add, of that group there was one skinny-ish girl, she wasn't let's say... /cgl/'s standard of what might be thin and nice, but she looked better than the whales that surrounded her.

It gets my goat, /cgl/. And it made me hate Naruto even more, to the point where I stopped bothering to skim through the latest chapters.

Brb going to cry about it.

I get a kick out of seeing cosplay in public in certain enviroments. Like when I'm driving up I-95 from some mid atlantic con and I see cosplayers driving back up in partial costume. Like when I saw a whole one piece cosplay group last year in a Tahoe heading back from Katsucon in costume. It made me lol to see Nami behind the wheel of the SUV. Or when we stop at the rest stop in Delaware and see people in cosplay eating at Sbarro. Makes the trip back home that much better. I've even picked up cosplayers from NYCC and NYAF in my cab before. Those are my best fares, and they tip better when I can identify their costumes.
    TL;DR:I ain't against it.

That's a given. The worst case is here in New york. That smelly fucking arcade on Mott street in chinatown is the epitome of hell on earth. Its a clogged toilet full of weeaboos, niggers, spics, scene kids, goth kids, stoners and alcoholics. Also its 100% underageb&

The smell is unbearable. As if chinatown on garbage day didn't stink enough, you've got a smell that makes con funk seem like roses and honey.
