    Okay /cgl/,

Why is it that anime cons have to be so stingy on prop firearms? You can't bring airsoft rifles or it has to be bright colors and not black or metallic, it can't be a toy gun that shoots foam darts, and it can also be transparent so the weaponz/peacebonding nazis can see what's inside?

Yet I go to Comic-Con and the majority have airsoft, prop guns in black, and paintball guns like there was a secret war games going to be held and they are easily let off the hook.

Last year at AX, my watergun (which falls under the rules) was rejected because it of its color.

It wasn't black, but it was dark green with CAMO patterns painted all over it with other shades of green painted all over it. OMFG, I remember that moment when the two dorky asian girls that were at the peacebonding booth said "no", that I wanted to smash it over there heads El Kabong style!

skip the con. if you want to use realistic weapons without hassle, do a private photoshoot in the right location.

I've recently started cosplaying some characters that require guns, and this is a constant source of paranoia for me. Sure, it's okay at places like D*C, but that's only one con out of the year (plus, these are vidya costumes, and D*C's not really the place for that).

Hell, I had a gun made out of freakin' PVC AND WOOD confiscated at an anime con because "it looked too real." And that con didn't even offer peace-bonding as an option, a random security guy came up to me. Bitchy attitude, too. Killed the rest of the con for me.
    >> Anonymous 03/12/09(Thu)19:14 No.1696830
Con organizer here, how about do us a test? Pull out the weapon in front uniform officers and if they don't take you down within 20 seconds or arrest you we'll let you into the con with your gun. Sound fair?

How about we don't even risk it? If you're butthurt, go elsewhere. We don't need scared parents screaming that we're some Columbine Convention so we might as well just ban them. If you want to show off your stuff, go to a gun show in cosplay.
    >> Anonymous 03/12/09(Thu)19:15 No.1696831
I've never had to go through the peacebonding process since I don't have weapon style props. Do the people actually know what they're doing, is this a position that typically attracts power trippers? Surely there are some anime cons out there that get it right...

Anime Boston's was pretty painless. I had some very realistic looking guns (metal, with moving parts, but completely non-firing), and I e-mailed the head of security prior to the con with the link to the store where I bought my guns (so he'd have specifics), to be extra sure. He okay'd them, and I printed the e-mail out just in case.

Got to the con, he looked them over for a sec, put orange ties on them, and I was on my way.

Though at that con, you have to be very careful NOT to go running around outside the convention center with guns (you may get arrested, it happened with some kids last year). But inside the con center, as long as you're not causing trouble and have an orange tip, you're good.

Gee, you sound like you worked at Katsucon.

A nonremovable orange tip, an inability to fire, and no magazine in the mag well should be MORE than enough for you people. You all don't seem to understand that you are not the law, and therefore, have no power over a person who is being neither threatening or offensive. If no crime has been committed, you should have no problem.

Oh, right... you're a fat neckbeard and this is your first exposure to any real "power".

    >>1696830
On the other hand, confiscating something that is made out of pvc and wood is like the TSA taking away your water bottle at the airport (and actually a bit ironic since at a lot of cons you can just buy prop weapons at the dealers booths). Con staffers should take a middle ground and just inspect and zip-tie/peacebond any questionable weapons. If someone really wanted to pull off a columbine at a con, it wouldn't be hard to do it even with the tightest restrictions.

I brought one of those to Comic-Con a few years back, I got caught halfway through the day by security and they politely told me to have it inspected downstairs.

I took it downstairs, showed it to the peacebonding people (which is actually security people as well) and they put a tape around it and I was on my way back to enjoying my day.

I wish anime cons would do the same.

    you're a fucking idiot,

at Otakon 07 I walked three blocks away to a 711 past two cops with a replica AK slung over my shoulder, it's plasticness and blaze orange tip was very noticeable, what did the cops do? pointed and laughed.

no police officer is going to arrest and or shoot someone for having a god damn toy gun, and this whole "GO TO A GUNSHOW IN COSPLAY" thing is something I'd expect for an ignorant jackass, alot of cosplays just aren't good enough unless they have the character's weapon.

with family that works in the Baltimore PD, they warn officers ahead of time about the weirdos that are gonna be downtown with their guns and swords and blue hair and all that stuff, you're almost insulting the intelligence of the average police officer by saying they're gonna shoot people who have toys.

now if the gun has no orange tip that's an entirely different story.

I hate the fact that the people whom peacebond stuff make them impossible to get off. They ruined my official yuna tiny bee guns by zip-tying the triggers back in such a way that it dug into the plastic. i also had ax tell me no on them even though i put bright obnoxious pink duct tape on the front.... they told me i needed to paint them a different color. i told them they're have to pay me money for replacing the controllers. they got pissy. i walked out. and for the rest of the day i went around the con without a peace bond on my weapons. i just kept them in the swag bag when i didn't pose...

What color are you going to paint it? Here, I'm going to copypasta part of Anime Expo's weapons policy:

"“Working Weapons” include, but are not limited to: firearms and ammunition of any and all sorts, rifles, shotguns, hand guns, BB guns, pellet guns, cap guns, air-soft weapons, paintball guns, blow guns,..."

As for the color of the weapon:

"Water guns, squirt guns, and non-functional toy guns (toy guns that do not launch any form of projectile) will only be approved if they are one of the following colors: white, bright red, bright orange, bright yellow, bright green, bright blue, bright pink, or bright purple; either singly or as the predominant color in combination with other colors in any pattern; or are transparent or translucent. Water guns and squirt guns must remain empty. Filling them with any substance will be considered a violation of the Peace Bonding requirements."

Way to be a jackass. I think a police officer could immediately tell the different between say a fucking nerf gun and a real one. But ya know what, some cons wouldn't allow that. Get off your damn high horse.

That being said though it still varies a bit from con to con. Just check the weapons policy of whatever con you're going to and try and plan your costumes accordingly. I've only used painted airsoft guns for props at Anime South, kept them in holsters most of the time, and no one seemed to care.

    Con attendee here.
Someone who also works with law enforcement here.

    You're a fucking moron.

Instead of worrying about stupid shit, how about you give us who are mature about our gun props a chance?

Only a total idiot would do something retarded. If you place yourself into a position where you use your prop gun or have your prop gun and you are arrested or taken down by police, you have seriously done something against the law to being with before the gun prop was involved.

I too attend Otakon and I have had prop guns every year since I started going. I have not had a SINGLE problem with police. I have actually had CONVERSATIONS with police while having my props on my back.

My props are made to be shown as PROPS. ORANGE clearly visible. I do not swing it around like an idiot, and I show off a neutral, non-agressive stance and attitude while in public with them.

I'm sure that the police know that the con is going on. More so than you think. They know what is going on in their city and if a con is bringing in people - they know about it. Ontop of that, they are going to see the thirty Clouds running around with huge ass swords and will know what is going on.
How about you take your con organization and shove it. If you're going to ban guns. Ban swords. Ban daggers. BAN ANY PROP THAT IS A WEAPON.

Because, oh! What if you pull our your prop sword in front of a police officer? What the hell is the difference?
Police officers are smarter than you think. You do not act like an idiot, then you will not be treated like an idiot by police. Should you get yourself in a situation that involves the police and your prop - you're own damn fault.

So, con organizer. Look up the facts. How many people have been shot at a con by police for their prop guns? Look at the comic-cons and sci-fi cons WHERE THEY DO NOT HAVE ORANGE TIPS? Do some research and organize properly. We're sick of being treated like 12 year olds.

I think peacebonding exists to create a bond or respect of sort between the con-goer and security. They're not going to take away your prop, but they want you to know that they will if you screw around with it. It should be a given to not assclown around with something that looks like a real gun or sword, but there are still those that act like morons at a con.
I guess it also exists in case someone actually decides to use a real firearm in their cosplay, but has that actually happened?

it's funny, the peacebonding I always knew of from ren faires (and some sci fi cons that semi-allowed live steel) involved tying the sword into the sheath which showed that you (or some nearby retard) couldn't just whip out the sword, and they sometimes used tape because it made it easily visible that it was.

how that became putting a piece of colored electrical tape on an arbitrary location on any prop bigger than your hand is beyond me, though.

simple, it never has. no one has ever been gunned down by police at a convention by having a realistic prop. no one has ever shot up a convention by bringing in a -real- weapon, either.

not to say it cant happen, but it's about as likely of happening at any other public venue. my advice? stop getting your panties in a bunch and worrying about the doomsday scenario. people are more intellegent than you think, especially cops.

sometimes this retarded enforcement happens by lazy and disgruntled con volunteers. they dont get paid, so they're less likely to want to do their job, which is to weed out stupid people, while keeping responsible people happy to show off their hard work without hassle. but sadly, it only takes a few bad apples to spoil the bunch; a narutard flinging around a kunai ruins everyone's chances of ever bringing them again next year.

so, if i read this correctly, peace bonding is meant to help security, con attendees and law enforcement. it marks weapons so there is a reasonable expectation that it is non functioning and won't be used in an unsafe manner.

since there is always some percentage of the population that doesn't/won't follow the rules, the controversy is whether or not cons have gone too far curbing the rights of rule abiders in order to crack down on rule breakers.

This was a poor attempt at a pickup line, not a security measure.

Do it. You would be a hero to all! (or at least me)

You have to make the zip ties into some kind of chainmaille armor.

Wouldn't it be nice if cons decided to have prop weapons reviewed on a case-by-case basis? Say, you walk into the con on the first day you're there (or at pre-reg), and you report to a booth where they examine your prop and decide as to how "safe" it is (say for guns, if it's been rendered unable to fire, and for all types of blades obviously the ability to do some damage) take a picture of you and the prop (for ID purposes), and off you go, never to be hassled again by con staff for the duration of the con; unless you do something that catches their attention, of course.
'Course, this'd mean that the guys in charge of inspecting the props would know their shit.

    I can dream, I suppose.

    >How the fuck am I gonna go rampaging with a newspaper?

Jason Bourne would like to have a word with you.
