    Con Dealer Stories...

The creepy. The good. Who to avoid, who to talk too. Etc.
    >> Anonymous 03/04/09(Wed)13:19 No.1677294
I will start off. I have only been to one con so far, which was a mistake to begin with. With me, I only like certain anime and because the majority of the cosplayers were bleach, naturard, death note fans, I had nobody to talk too. I visited the dealers room several times on Saturday, eye things I had no money for. There was one particular comic I wanted: Chocolate Milk Maid. It was raunchy, sexist...all that good stuff. Mainly hilarious. I wanted it. Plus it had a cute black girl. The guy who ran it was some fat artist who had a big breast fetish (it was VERY obvious he was also into breast inflation as well). Well on my second trip around I made some awkward comment to some guy dressed as a ninja and began once again trying to pick which comic I WAS going to buy (got some cash). While there, he started making these weird gestures to the ninja fellow. At first I wasnt sure what they were going on about, but then it was clear. THEY WERE HINTING AT MY BOOBS. I mean that weirdo was doing some raising motions at his chests. THEN POINTING AT ME. I been told my tits are pretty big but nothing compared to some knockers out there. Not enough to be suggested at while IM STILL THERE.I was wearing a baggy sweater to Pete's sake. I know I know...not a big deal. But its just one of those things that really really made me uncomfortable. Decided not to get the comic after all.

    Boring story. Felt like contributing.

I would've filed a complaint. Really, I would have. If you're trying to keep a stand open, you're still on the job, and guess what? You have to be professional at your profession. Sorry, but gesturing to big boobs on a girl doesn't count as professional in my book.

Indeed, take me, I would most likely notice your breasts, and do the mental "Wow breasts!" Then I would wonder if you have a nice personality, think I'm not worth you and be extremely nice to you once you buy something. Then I would forget you and drink my sorrows away.

    Honest.

There's this one guy in his late 30's or so that sells swords at cons like PMX and ALA, often wears a bandana on his head, he's fuckin' awesome. He talked to me about a bunch of conspiracy theories and shit like Prescott Bush's Nazi Gold stash, and Planet X - Nibiru (hint: 2012). He is really smart and I love crazy fuckers like that. Talk to him if you see him, he's a trip.

Dealer refused to sell me a yaoi doujinshi because I didn't "look like someone who would read that but someone from the press who probably wants to write a shitty article about yaoi fandom" and he "won't allow that" (I wore a plain pencil skirt and a T-shirt. What the hell)

We have a yaoi stand sometimes at mcm. only theres some amerifag there that screams it alllllllll day, god its so annoying. We also find it quite amusing how he sells boy love fandomness to preteens whilst he checks out there tits. although it seems that mcm have got rid of him, finaly.

There's an airsoft gun vendor that I've seen at a few cons. I never really paid much attention to his booth since I have no use or interest for his wares, but walking past his booth once I noticed a hand-written sign taped to the wire-walls. It basically read that if you have any questions, you "should just get the fuck out of here" and not buy from him because we don't know anything and we're stupid.

I would've just laughed because a mind-set like that can ruin his sales (educating customers can result in more income)...but the fact that he actually wrote such vulgar language kinda irked me.

But yeah, the yaoi dude for sure. Batshit ex was trying to buy something from him once, and had to leave me alone IN FRONT OF HIS TABLE to find her stupid ID...Then lost her car. FFFF. So I get stuck there, listening to this guy trying to peddle me yaoi, despite my constant reminders that I was 17 at the time, just so I could guard the doujinshi that my ex wanted to fucking buy. She eventually showed up again and said she couldn't find her car. So I got to ditch her there and find the bloody thing. God damn, though. That man is an annoyance and a half. He seemed to take particular amusement in the fact that it was Easter weekend.

There's this guy, goes to Otakon and Connecticon if I'm not mistaken, coolest guy ever. Works for the Hentai Games stand and all day at both cons he'd just shout out about how they were purveying smut and filth and lecherous things.

He was so funny, I don't do PC games but I stood and talked to him for a while about some of the ones he liked, talking about some of the ones I'd seen my friends playing and he was cool with the fact that I didn't do the games.

I love dealer's that don't pressure a sale on you and are just genuinely good people. If I ever need a smutty anime game, totally waiting til I see him again.

I was cosplaying as Tsubaki at a convention and while walking through the dealers room I heard a group of guys going "Tsubakiiii! Tsubakiii!" and I turned around and a group of vendors were waving me over and when I talked to them for a bit, the gave me a free Cowboy Bebop CD.

So yeah, that was a really fun and great dealer experience. I also helped out at their booth for a few hours so we became pretty good friends.

This guy's not too bad when you're away from the con. I bought some gag doujin from him last year at Otakon, and then ran into him at the airport the next day. He remembered both me and my purchase, asked if I'd liked what I bought, had I had fun, etc. etc. small talk at the x-ray machine. He's actually pretty mild-mannered, considering he makes a living screeching about buttsex at the top of his lungs.

That is so sweet since cosplay barely ever pays off, its always a huge money sink grind to get things done.

I could totally understand where they are coming from as otaku. When you see an example of a good, creative, or rare character, its appreciated in the highest regard in nerdom.
If I saw someone in one of my favorite costumes and I were a dealer, I might have done the same thing.

Protip, try haggling with your dealer with a nice costume, then.try it in normal clothes and see if there are any discrepancies.

Is it true the HenDaNe (hentai doujin seller guy who looks vaguely like John Malkovich's heroin addict brother) is notorious for picking up teenage girls? I remember him complimenting a few girls' costumes when I was looking through his stuff, but I didn't see him doing anything blatantly sleazy.

Aside from selling the doujins, that is.

There is a middle-aged man who sells all sorts of prints of jrock and jpop artists. There is also usually a rack of bodyline clothing as well as the more expensive lolita brands.

long story short, he is awesome and I look forward to seeing him every year at Acen and AI.

    >>1678628
as obnoxious of a person he may seem at times (when he is shouting stuff about buttsex), he does in fact seem like a chill dude.

I guess in the world of peddling yaoi, you need to have somewhat of a good sense of humor. And at least he has that to keep himself from going insane.

The old Japanese guy who sells imported art books and other printed materials is incredibly sweet. Years ago, I dropped my badge somewhere in his booth and someone carried it off. He gave me one of his dealer badges for the rest of the con. :)

Ever since then, I've always bought something from his booth every year. He always recognizes me and is super friendly.

One year at ACen I stopped at one of the weapon dealers(that year there was a ton) and looked around for stuff for my friends and a practicing sword for my dad. The dealer came upto me and started talking to me as if we were best friends. At first he started to bitch that all the vendors were way underpriced and he had to cut prices then complained that there were so many. Since I'm polite I listened until 10 to 15 minutes later I just walked away, I couldn't take it anymore plus he didn't have anything of interest...all he had was knives and shitty bleach swords.

There was a really nice guy at Akicon. He was selling a shitton of gundam models at really low prices, and had a lot of cool things from older shows (I got a GE999 figure!) It didn't look like a lot of people were really hitting his booth, since he didn't have Bleach and Naruto and Death Note crap, but he was probably my favorite vendor of the weekend.

I don't know if its been mentioned on this thread so I'll toss one out. On the bigger east coast cons, check out Lion of the Sun. He's got some gorgeous clothing, animals ears and tails, and takes custom orders. I found a beautiful snow leopard tail there and was sad that they didn't have matching ears, and he custom made them for me for 15 dollars. He was at CTCon a couple years ago when it was my first con, he didn't seem that bad to me? Then again I didn't really stay near him for too long. So what's wrong with him?

At the first NYAF I was trying to pick which which weird plushy thing from Tsubasa Chronicles to get for my friend's birthday [she loves it, I haven't even seen it] and I couldn't decide between a white or a black one [I didn't know wtf the difference was]. So I turn around to answer a question one of my mates asked me, and the seller at the booth demands to look in my back cause he must have thought I was planning on stealing one. I laughed, opened my bag from another booth which just had a PlayArts figure and some Narutard shit for my sister in it, and then informed him he just lost a sale. I would have understood normally, with the amounts of stealing at cons one should be careful, but this guy was a complete asshole about it.

Dammit I think I know who you are talking about, but I can't remembe rhis name. Was he at Ikasucon 07 by chance?

I always buy stuff from this one older couple who show up to a lot of east coast/Ohio cons. They had a Queen Emeraldas model, I squeed, I bought. In fact they usually tend to have a lot of Matsumoto and generally older anime stuff.

I remember getting a few bucks off a Samurai Deeper Kyo wallscroll at Otakon 06 because he really liked my SDK costume.

The first time I went to A-kon, I was really nervous and didn't know what to think. The dealer's room was huge to me, and I could've spent hours there just looking at everything. It was really crowded, too, so it was hard finding a booth that was both interesting and accessible to my timid, 16 year old self.

So towards the middle of the room, I find a familiar sign, "J-list" and decide to make my way over there. They had their usual H-games and solar friends and what-not, nothing that I hadn't seen/bought from them before, but the representative there was so friendly and nice that it felt really comforting to me. We talked a little, and he gave me a free stick of Ume gum that smelled really really good. I decided to save it for later, and didn't actually find it again for a couple months. After that, I didn't want to chew it, but instead decided to put it in my wallet, where it now is almost 5 years later. I haven't seen J-list there since my first A-kon, but I do still buy from them.

First time i talked to him it was pretty much "business as usual", but he is really approachable. Heres a good one.

I at New York Comic Con, and last minute a friend of mine asked me to do pokemon with her and another friend, as she was doing Gary and the other Ash.

Surely I thought! A beloved past love of my childhood, what better way to revisit it then by cosplay?

I am not quite sure how exactly, but I ended up making a last minute eevee ginjinka. Never again.

Either way, it was the second day of the con, the day that they were doing pokemon, and I really did not want to create this, so I held it off as much as I could. Along with this I didn't think too much into it.

Like how I could stick the huge ass fluffy tail to my ass, for example.

So I am there at the con, holding the tail to my ass for pictures, as awesome as it was for the Ash to do a train-ride sew job to sew the tail to my belt, it was way too heavy. Woo for creating the tail proportional to the show.

    Fun.

But, while we were walking around, I decided just to cut a whole in opposite sides on the tail, and thread the belt through. Unfortunatly, I had no way of doing this. Though as I was telling Gary and Ash this, somehow someone mentioned scissors.

At this point we were browsing about in one of the dealers stores, who was selling these quite nice leather items, small tails, and other awesome things.

And the moment someone said scissors, the dealer popped up behind us and said, "Do you guys need scissors?" And immediatly stopped what she was doing to get us them, while resulted in the fluffy ass tail actually staying on my belt.

    Awesome Con Dealer is Awesome.

It was Tekkoshocon 08, and it was my old school friend's first con. She couldn't really afford a full cosplay, so she went with a neko schoolgirl thing made from one of our old school uniforms (she was really cute). Some time Friday evening, we decided to sit somewhere for a while, and some guy plops down beside us on the couch. Normally, I have no problem just talking to people at cons, but it didn't take him two seconds before he started hitting on my friend (and a little on me, which was weird because I was crossplaying Ishida at the time and...well, I'm not the prettiest Ishida in the world) and wouldn't let up. She was getting extremely uncomfortable, and I was trying to give him hints to back off, not wanting to be rude and say "Fuck off" flat-out (I think mentioning we were underage just made him hit on her harder). Eventually, he walked away and we had an awkward laugh. Later, as we were browsing the dealer's room, we ran into the guy again. Turns out he was running one of the plushie stands (if I remember correctly). He also sold glowsticks and shit at the rave. We made sure to avoid that stand for the remainder of the con.

    ...and there's my boring story.

That's the dumbest justification I've seen. (Though, I would like to use it to yell at non-gothic lolitas)

Conventions and cosplay are pretty much inexorably related and if you think that any rule on 4chan is hard and fast (except that mods are fags), you're a damn fool.

Yaoi Man is all bark and no bite. He's never done more to anyone than talk to them. Sure he'll complement your cosplay and make stupid remarks, but that about it. I find him funny sometimes and you can always tell where you are in the dealers room when he yells about "hot boys in tight pants!"

    The paddles piss me off.

You're talking about Xavier. X is fucking cool as hell. Helped him out once a few years back when I ran ACen's Registration and ever since then he's always hooked me up with discounts if not outright giving me shit for free.

I met this nice dealer at CTcon this year. Didn't catch what stand it was at, but it had figures and plushes and usual dorky shit I like to buy.

I was buying a bunch of those grab boxes of Lucky Star and Haruhi for my friends who couldn't go and also as souvenirs for my sisters. They aren't big on anime, but cute little figures are cool to them at long as they're not huge, so grab boxes work.

Anyways, I'm opening the one I just bought and my phone goes off, so, I reach to grab it, drop it, it SHATTERS. I just stare at the ground where my phone is hanging by half the hinge, the screen black, and not ringing anymore. I pick it up, hoping it works, can't hear shit captain. I was expecting a call from a guy I liked all day to meet up for dinner that night and now my phone is broken and I don't have his number memorized. I have a moment of "fffffffffff" before the tears start. I hate crying in public so I'm doing my best not to let it out when the guy behind the counter just hands me a plushy of Jiraiya I'd been eyeing.

Says I was his best customer all day and he didn't want my weekend to be ruined because of my phone breaking.

Saw him a week later at Otakon, took his picture with my brand new phone and gave him a box of pocky. Best dealer ever.

You'll probably be hearing more Vendor shit out of me in April, BUUUUUUUUT.
Ohayho-con this year, I felt like a dumbass for wasting 30 bux on this Joystick I thought was good. (It was Saturday, I was a KoF 2002 Joystick, and I went "HOLY SHIT") the guy was selling import vidya related shit among other things. I guess the 499.99 Disadea PSP should have tipped me off, the item was faulty and the damn Merchant was a European.

Moral of the Story - Avoid NewYork Game Importers, in good news though, I did find a Haruhi Messenger's bag which has lasted in good endurance (bought it off some asian woman who distinctly looks like Yaya), and did an Air guitar riff with a merchant from the other /v/ Import shop at Ohayo-con.

Anyone know anything about the Venders at /a/ punch or Otakon? lol

Ah, Xavier and company are very cool peeps. I went to my first AB alone and knew no one and they were nice and friendly and we ended up going out as a group to see the new XMEN film. It was great!!

Haha, there's that Indian sword dealer who always has that fucking masumune or whatever that he bangs on the table! HAHA!

This might be the same guy I was about to post about from CTCon. Sold me a figure discounted... though it was Sunday so that might have had something to do with it. Either way, sweetest vendor EVER.

Kcon last year there was some random artist in the art chunk of the dealer room wearing an EPIC scout cosplay and her laptop case was the intelligence. I gathered all my friends to say "You rock" only to realize she drew bad porn doujins.

    Fucking anime conventions...
