    49 KB 4chan 101 - where we make fun of you Anonymous 02/23/09(Mon)23:49 No.1657234
Though many may think this is a bad idea, I, anon Louisianime staffer, wants to know from you all at /cgl/ what you would like to see at a con.
We're getting ready to announce a large amount of our programming, and some guests, and so I think it's a good time to get some thoughts from the masses.
And who is more honest than 4chan?
Truth be told, many of the Louisianime staffers are 4chan regulars, and we even plan to have a 4chan panel at the con.
So, I'd like to know what sort of events you all want, what you would like to see at the 4chan panel, and what in general would make the con top notch.
First a little info about the con.
Louisianime is in Baton Rouge, May 8-10th, at the Baton Rouge Marriot. It's a first year convention, intended to be a small con (under 1,000 people) and highly focused on entertainment over information. Rather than having dozens of Q&As, there will be gameshows, skits, humor based Q&As (like 4chan 101, where we make fun of you), and a large number of cosplay panels as well.
If you have any questions, comments, or hell, even flames, feel free and shoot them my way.
    >> Anonymous 02/24/09(Tue)00:20 No.1657315
The problem with asking this and admitting your actual Lousianime Staff is that you are going to get a lot of attention seeking desperate for guest billing types self posting to try to get you and your staff to think they are more popular then they are so you'll invite them as a guest.

Activities though and cosplay events you'll probably actually get a lot of honest opinions about.

Import some guests that aren't from Texas if you're after VA's and whatnot. The same people who do that scene over and over get tiresome.

Get some fresh talent if you can, but I understand it's not something you can do so easy.

If you have a dealer's room, see if they aren't the same type of dealers. Get some variety.

People will bitch and complain. Don't let it get to you. Listen to those who appreciate your efforts.

Don't use Guests as Judges for events unless they volunteer. Some of them despise that.

Respect is a two way street. Keep your game face on. If staff drama goes down, make sure the con goers don't see it.

    Road House rules. "Be nice."

Set up water stations around the convention area.

Don't let staffers/people in authority cosplay if it can be helped. Coming off as a professional is paramount.

Don't have 15 year old kids be security or any other such jobs that require a more adequate volunteer.

Try your best to be aware of potential "trouble spots" in the convention scene. If Johnny Otaku has been black listed from TX conventions, maybe you should follow suite. If "Blah" cosplayer did another convention dirty, rethink inviting them.

And always remember, that conventions are a labor of love and that you're working it for the fans. No money or business or fame will come of it. Only the magnificent sense of "I did that shit."

Good luck. I may see you there if that weekend is free.

    ~Lafayette anon.

Maybe have a hentai/yaoi/yuri booth or room where you check ID's. I know Mechacon can't sell it because it's a "family oriented convention", but target older cosplayers as well. Mechacon is loosing my interest so quickly because it's all about 12 year olds now and there's nothing for 18+ cosplayers to do.

Mommy and Daddy will only let their children come for a day if they're lucky, but older cosplayers are the ones who are booking your hotel rooms, buying most of your merch, and bringing their friends.

about the johnny otaku thing, he hasn't been banned from all texas cons. He's simply been banned from various specific conventions who have certain staffers who were *PRESENT* for the johnny Otaku incident. Those staffers just happen to staff multiple conventions.

Louisianime does not pre-emptively ban *anyone* However, there's always certain exceptions, such as if any guest has a restraining order against someone, a whole other slew of actions can potentially occur.

First off, I'm going to guess that this is Jenny or Kevin posting here because your grammar & spelling is pretty good which automatically eliminates the morons on staff including the chump who started the con.

Second, it doesn't matter how much planning you put with a dreadfully designed website and severe lack of content no one is going to give this first year con a flipping chance without some meat on its bone to prove itself.

Notice that the con is going anywhere right after Ikkicon finally ended? You now have 3 months to put a con together. It is time to get your shit together which I highly doubt considering what we all saw at Ikkicon.

Pretty much any convention will be staffed by a circle jerk of weeaboos.

    That said...

Get some artists with talent/who've done actual comics to do panels. I'm sick of cosplay panels, I'm sick of listening to Jenny Weeaboo talk about why SailorMoon makes her panties wet, and I'm sick of "What the Naruto Characters REALLY Think". I'm a 22 year old, and if you want my business, you need to step up the game and get rid of the con funk. I need more reason than just cosplay to drop 40$ on a con badge, and 100$ per person for three nights at a hotel to get me to attend your con. Any shit I'd buy from the dealer's room is cheaper on JList, the artist alley is usually awfully mismanaged and badly placed, and cosplay contestants are usually made to stand in their hot costumes for over an hour waiting to compete. Get Amaya back for cosplay staff (because she's fair and unbiased and knows her shit), get some guests who are a little less retarded than your standard fare, and don't rely on American VA's, most of us don't watch Toonami. Get someone fair to handle the Artist Alley, make participants submit portfolios so if it fills up, it's not filled with shit, and don't charge a 25$ fee for people who use assistants. Make it publically known ahead of time WHEN you plan on opening up slots, keep the public informed of how quickly the slots are filled, find a good location with plenty of room and wall outlets for the AA, and keep the public informed of who has a table, and what kind of art they produce.

The less drama, the fewer power struggles, the better. You're not doing this to get 'famous' or 'popular', because really, what kind of pathetic popularity would that be? You're doing this to serve other nerds, so put your ego last. Consider hiring designers for your sites, and there should have been consideration for a mascot contest BEFORE you advertised at Mechacon. The more local talent you can involve, the better, and the happier you make this local talent, the more positive feedback you'll get.

One before the con to set everything up and one at the con to manage all of the panels and the show. (imho, this is a stupid setup) I was asked to be, what was described to me as, the on site director and panel coordinator. I agreed. However it happened that at some point in time after all of this, Blu, with his brilliant management skills did away with this duel director policy and somehow forgot to inform me of it. Up until this point I had no idea who the second director was supposed to be, so imagine my surprise to find out that not only had the system changed, but I was no longer even in it. Also if any of you are wondering why I was replaced, join the club, cause I don't know either. I'm certain it wasn't for any sort of failure in performance because I hadn't been given the chance to actually fail at anything yet. After that, I decided that if this was how staff was going to be treated, I didn't want to be on any staff that he was in charge of.

I was about to say "what drama" and then I scrolled up.

    Oh lol.

I don't know WHAT the crap is going on here, but to let you know, I'm OP.

    1) Whoever is starting this shit, I dunno wtf you're going on about. There was no pre-blu staff. In fact, I think we only lost 3 staffers when we had the change over. 2 of which (maybe 3) have been addressed here.

All I have to say is, wow. I thought I knew 4chan. I thought that given the fact that we're a small, relatively unknown con who's staffed by completely dramu free convention veterans (at least, dramu in relation to the con. I don't pry about personal lives) that no one would be stupid enough to just start making shit up.

Thank you 4chan, for reminding me why you never trust anonymous. It was a valuable lesson.

Still, there is much to be learned here. Afterall, a con doesn't care what people *say* about it, they care what people *think* about it, cause that's what keeps them going.

So if anyone wants some OTHER info, I can reply, apparently other people have been replying here that are not me, but that's how 4chan rolls I guess.

Also, as an apology to cgl for inadvertantly bringing in dramu I knew not existed (also to please the 4chan gods, or flying spagetti monster) TITS
    >> Anonymous 02/25/09(Wed)02:14 No.1660281
also, out of curiosity, how many people here have been to a 4chan panel at a con before, and where was it. I've heard of a few, but not really sure how many there are out there.

I am thoroughly confused by your statements, anon.

    The website was professionally done.
The original splash bage had been converted into a mockery of a webpage, and upon realizing that blunder, the higher ups dished out good money for a professional design.

A mascot was made almost immediately, not sure what you're thinking of. We've had a kabuki theme since the beginning, and unfortunately due to certain issues we found would be impractical for us to attempt, we had to strike the kabuki performance (though some kabuki related things will still be there).

Have any of you even seen a kabuki stage before? It is not like a normal stage. There's a lot of logistics to it, and time and money required, etc.

Lastly, local talent? We have a local artist who launched her career in Baton Rouge and our guests (which you should expect to see more of in a week or two) are mostly southern as well.

So relax, Laffeyetteanon, we hear ya. If it weren't for some technical difficulties, the site would already be updated with these various nuggets.

And don't let hateranon convince you all that going to 4chan is a bad idea. In case you couldn't tell by the previous statements about adult programming, and a lighthearted 4chan panel, we don't take ourselves too seriously, we like to party and have a good time like the rest of you. Hell, we're having a con in Louisiana for goodness sakes.

speaking of which, I can't wait to get some good cajun food that's not mainstream (jambalaya, gumbo, et touffet, everyone's had that) so anyone got any suggestions?

Cajun food is best served at someone's house. Can't really go out for it. However, ask the locals what they like and make sure it's not a tourist trap.

Honestly, I have enjoyed all the cons I've been to. TX, LA, and GA. I take away a little bit of something good from all of them. Cons aren't the same all around, even though they run through the gamut of similar ideas.

TX has pulled some great concerts for me. Ketchup Mania at Akon one year was tops. Not to mention also the Houston cons that are just a hop down I-10 for me.

Up until Louisianime and after Numa Rei No, MechaCon was the only LA show for a few years. The staff were very nice and I maid some new friends from the Baton Rouge and New Orleans area.

AWA in Georgia was the farthest con I've been to and that was fun. It was such a surprise to see people from back home and make new friends.

Anyways, good luck with everything, OP. Don't let anyone bring you down. I think every state should have a con and the more the better. It makes people to try to put on the best show they can.

If you're going to point fingers there, anon must realize there's at least two more couples within the LA staff. So what do you think should happen to them? Fire them for their own relationships according to your words?

As long as as they keep work and play separate I don't really care if any staff for any con is dating, engaged, or what have you.

    >>1660735
There is a difference between a serious long term commitment and trying to get into someone's pants.

Relationships between staffers shouldn't be a problem if there are enough levels between the two. IE, one does not directly oversee the other.

Beauty, I love you to teeny tiny microscopic peices. Just setting that out there.

    Now, more on topic.
Numa Rei no Con was... welll.. crap and I honestly have no clue how the staffing went. It seemed mostly run by one couple.
Mecha Con is mostly run by a circle that is fairly tight knit. This had lead to a lot of sucesses on the part of that con, but this also means that the convention is not cycling through staff members, taking on new people, training them on what needs to be done and what they should expect, and then seeing them leave for their own projects. Because it is pretty closed, other people in Louisiana are frankly not learning how to direct or staff or manage a con. So, this con ended up trying locals, bunches of them flaked, so they brought in Texans who run aproximately 527 conventions every year, and the Texans dragged in more Texans. Yeah, it would be nice if the con is local. But who wins in the fight of local versus intelligently staffed? How about local versus not run at all?

4chan panels are usually terrible, but end with the attendees having a good time, so sure, keep it. Slap up a bunch of paper on the walls or over tabletops and give people permission to draw all over it. Keep staff in there to make sure they don't draw on anything else. Give 'em some boxes or something to draw on and inevitably try to wear too.

I want to see a schedualed DS meetup, where I can maybe play some games multi player, grab some new friend codes, or pictochat for a few hours.

I'd have to fix up my Animal Crossing town though. That place is weedy as hell.

Firstly, rename. corny as hell title for a convention.

Second, get rid of the 4chan panel. It'll either be people shouting memes or starting shit.

Third, take down that you're the Ikkicon team. Most people in Houston who regularly attend conventions can't stand Ikkicon. Also the artist description for Amy looks like it was written to insult her - reconsider that presentation.
