I want to do a Ness cosplay. Does anyone have any tips to get the stripes on the shirt just right? There are literally no striped shirts of this type to be found anywhere on the internets.

    Pic related.

taping off the sections and using fabric spray paint might work.

I did a hoodie that way with regular spray-paint. Just don't wash it before the con.
    >> Anonymous 01/23/09(Fri)20:04 No.1576473
spray paint is a terrible idea! if you want an easy way, get a base shirt of one of the colors, then get fabric in the other color and sew strips on directly
    >> Anonymous 01/23/09(Fri)20:08 No.1576484
    >>1576473
That's a worse idea. Now you just have lumps of fabric sewed on, that's not how stripes work.

Also odds are OP is too old to do a good Ness. Find another Earthbound character, we need more of those, less HURRR I PLAYED NESS IN BRAWL.
    >> Anonymous 01/23/09(Fri)20:13 No.1576494
You can also just find a white-and-blue shirt and dye it yellow. I tried it with Lucas and it worked like a charm.

    >>1576484

OP here. I considered the sewing idea and came to the same conclusion... I had already figured I'd try taping but was mostly confused about what type of paint to use for the stripes. Fabric paint or acrylic with some sort of base to keep the painted sections soft?

I've also considered other Mother characters (I really want to do a Kamen no Otoko from Mother 3) but Ness is the only Earthbound character I think I could manage...I've got a round youthful face and I'm a darker tan than any of the other main characters...

Poo's hair is too hard, lmao.

    Simply Spray fabric paint.
    >> eemee !r2BOAKDjWM 01/24/09(Sat)00:24 No.1577110
Actually, sewing on strips (or fabric gluing for my claus shirt in my case) works very well. just...for the love of god make sure they are all the same size, i've seen too many ness/lucas not bother to measure. my strips were 3" and i liked the way it turned out.
    >> Anonymous 01/24/09(Sat)00:27 No.1577120
    >>1577110

No kidding? I'd still think it would come out a little lumpy...got any progress pics? :D I'd love to see your Claus.
    >> Anonymous 01/24/09(Sat)00:28 No.1577126
How about not being a lazy fuck, cutting strips of the right colour fabric, and sewing them all together? Take that, make it into a shirt- BAM.
    >> Anonymous 01/24/09(Sat)00:40 No.1577192
    >>1577126

It has nothing to do with being lazy, at least not on my part. I want to see pics of 'sewn-on stripes' before I try it because I think it will look like shit. I think they'll stick up and puff out weirdly from the shirt underneath.
    >> Anonymous 01/24/09(Sat)00:43 No.1577202
    >>1577192
What Anon meant was actually sewing a shirt together from strips of differently colored fabric, not sewing strips on top of an already made t-shirt. But that sounds like way more work than is necessary.
Again, Simply Spray fabric paint. Look into it.
    >> Anonymous 01/24/09(Sat)00:55 No.1577247
    >>1577202

Thanks, I appreciate it. I've been googling and I think I finally got some answers that I wanted. I didn't want the dry stripes to crack or peel, so fabric spray paint seems to be the way to go. Thanks! :D

Enjoy your shitty looking shirt, then.
I really don't see how just 'making' your own striped material is that hard. It's so fucking easy, and won't take that long. Just sew straight, and it'd look fine.
    >> Anonymous 01/24/09(Sat)01:00 No.1577262
    >>1577259

that paint works great if you know what you're doing. I don't see why it has to be shitty.

    >>1577259
Simply Spray actually looks really great. Don't get butthurt just because he didn't want to use your method.
    >> Anonymous 01/24/09(Sat)01:03 No.1577278
    >>1577264
I couldn't care less if he used my method or not.

    What looks better?

material x material, or material x shiny paint?

I can just tell OP is underage B&, considering their first instinct was 'LOOK FOR SHIRT ONLINE'. I highly doubt they could pull the paint off right.

Lazy preteens just piss me off.
    >> Anonymous 01/24/09(Sat)01:11 No.1577306
    >>1577278

I'm 20 and a female. Not a preteen. I think I've already said three times that I'm worried about the mismatched fabric puffing out. Get the stick outta your ass.

I had no clue how to create a striped shirt so I looked for one online. My bad. People check thrift stores and shit all the time so I thought I'd try my luck.

After researching the fabric spray paint I found that it doesn't dry hard OR shiny and it doesn't peel or crack. Why the fuck am I going to sew and risk the puffing and lumpiness when I can tape off the shirt and paint it with something comparable to dye?

You're getting so pissy over nothing, lol.
    >> Anonymous 01/24/09(Sat)01:12 No.1577312
    >>1577278
Simply spray isn't shiny. And you just put tape down over the parts you don't want painted. Hard to screw up. Calm your shit, anon, you're getting really butthurt over nothing.
    >> Anonymous 01/24/09(Sat)01:19 No.1577336
If you do end up using Simply Spray, make sure you use the Stencil Spray version. The regular spray is just for coloring fabrics and doesn't take well to taped off areas when making stripes...

Yet again, you don't comprehend that I'm not saying put the fabric ON more fabric. Allow meto elaborate; see picture. Over 9000 hours, etc.

    >>1577312
I'm really not pissed. More amazed someone's that stupid to not even know how to make a striped shirt.
    >> Anonymous 01/24/09(Sat)01:21 No.1577349
    >>1577344

And how about the sleeves? And how about the fucking neckline? Sewing all of that together instead of using spray paint is fucking retarded.

    >>1577344
It's time to let it go. Some people can't sew, some people aren't going for the bestest craftsmanship ever, some people just want a goddamn striped shirt without having to work too hard.
    >> Anonymous 01/24/09(Sat)01:27 No.1577372

Nothing a little bit of patterning and forethought couldn't solve.

    >>1577359
Then OP should get the fuck off /cgl/, and move along to coscom.

Really, now, Anon. Is it that time of the month for you, or something?

Striping the fabric would take you an hour at the most. Sewing a basic shirt, maybe another hour.
What did you expect, posting here and trying to take costume short cuts? Like, comon.

It's not the trying that's the problem, I just find it funny that you're calling OP stupid for not having acquired a certain skill yet.

    >>1577394 not having acquired a certain skill yet

This. Last night I had to tell someone here how to shorten a skirt and re-hem it. If you don't know how to sew much yet, making a striped
shirt is going to be really hard and get messed up.
    >> Anonymous 01/24/09(Sat)01:43 No.1577414
    >>1577394
My first time posting in this thread, but nice try, I guess

and they won't go acquiring any skills if they just expect the internet to link them to ebay auctions whenever they have an objective to complete
    >> Anonymous 01/24/09(Sat)01:43 No.1577417
Op here, the last few posts weren't me at all.

I had considered sewing but wanted a way that would be both easier and look seamless. If I sew the stripes together from two different shirts there will be the indented sewn line between the bars of fabric...and I'm not sure I like the way that looks. Not a cop out, just the truth.

At this point I'm honestly considering trying a small trial of both to see which I prefer. All the bitching in this thread is crazy. D:
    >> Anonymous 01/24/09(Sat)01:46 No.1577426
    >>1577417

And also, all of the Ness/Lucas cosplay I've seen thus far (it's quite a limited number) seems to be fabric painted as opposed to sewn and I quite like the seamless results. OP pic is related.

I wanted tips on the actual painting because I don't have any experience with it.

If two peices of fabric are sewn together like I described earlier, there'd be a seam, yes. But it would look natural, if you ironed it.

It would look pretty much the same if you painted it, if not better.

Pic related; what it would look like.
