I love the Japanese candy they sell at cons, though I'm a fan of the teriyaki cart too. I also like going to local pizza places in costume and returning with a fatty slice of cheese pizza. The rest of the year I'm at home eating raisin toast and drinking apple juice...I wouldn't be surprised if I gained five pounds at a con.

I should mention this behaviour isn't restricted to just food either. I went to make myself a lemsip when I had a shitty cold a few weeks ago. It was two years out of date and a nice beige colour instead of yellow. I complain, she hits me with a newspaper, then when I go to throw it away she takes it off me telling me not to be wasteful.

Seconded but I make my own Trail Mix and share with random people.

Best is to get a small bag of good quality trail mix then seee what else you would like in it then buy those ingredients then keep mixing. I've got like 6L of custom trail mix made of fucking win and good stuff following an awesome method of making it.

Chocolate covered coffee beans for the muthafucking win. Tho having personally been on those beans for a length of time I can confirm you start to see things after ~3 days (the con) on that.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugvVvGUHajs&feature=related

Tho it's best to watch from part 1 ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmJ0C1fAlQE ) and cue it to 07:33 for the trail mix start segment.

    Good useful info.

I tend to pack my own snacks and food if/when I can then buying food at the con which isn't always good and expensive and small portions. A friend of mine brings US G.I Issue MRE's while I sometimes bring freeze dried food that only needs hotwater and 5 mins to have a good hot meal.

I have used Alpine Aire and thier stuff is pretty good. Best to get it when on sale. http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_listing.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302695547&bmUID=1232

Most hotels I've been too have coffee there or you can aquire hotwater or the hotel room has a coffee pot inside already. Add hot water and you're good to you.

I've had the fries with ketchup when I was at CNAX and I've had Pizza Pizza ordered in at Anime North. Pending how you pack and carry your gear or if you plan on going my route I've had a friend that take a single portable burner stove to the con before and made ramen noodles all weekend and kept his luggage very light weight as he was sharing a room with 8 other people.

Made my own buns and sandwiches and fridged it then freezed some box drinks. The box drinks keep the stuff fresh and having a bunch made I just carry a soft cooler bag to the con with a few large ziplock bags and when I'm at the hotel I load up on the ice and put it inside the cooler which tends to hold everything at a safe temp for about 5-6 hours at a time then I return and reload the ice and end up with noramlly 2 days worth of food and finish that first then on the 3rd day if I have any left I either eat or bin it then use some money for food at the con. Saves me money to use for other sutff.

interesting. i may try this next time but i'm sticking to hotwater only meals as i have to fly to some cons and fuel tanks i'm almost sure off can't be in carry on luggage or some fuel types can't even be in checked in luggage as well. i tend to without checked luggage myself to cons as in the past ive lost a number of expensive tech/items/luggage/etc. chigacos ohara airport is fucking famous for losing shit all the time.

protip: i've done this a lot while flying and bypass a lot of lineups by declaring at the check in fo rmy tickets that i have firearms. it doesnot have to be a working gun or even looking like a gun. for all intensive purposes a reciever is the acutal gun even if you don't have the barrel, stock, etc.

because you declared that you have to check in firearms you're allowed to lock you bags with non tsa locks but the check in agent will have to check your item to make sure it's unloaded and you'll be scooted to the front of the line and and have you bag scanned quickly and the scanner agent will be noted that your bag has been pre-checked.

this always pisses off people when they're lined up like 100 people in line and you can walk right pass them saving you like an hours line up time. :) when you travel to canada tho you can't use airsoft or real firearms parts to get around the line ups. just buy a cheap ass hard plastic/rubber gun and claim it as a 'theatrical prop' and you get to pass the whole line up.

+5 on MRE's (Meal Ready to Eat) and +5 on just-add-hot-water full meals.

MRE's are ideal if for some reason some dimentional rift happens and overcharges all the pokemon cosplayers to black out 14 blocks around the con thne yah you have a meal to eat without needing hot water hence MEAL READY TO EAT.

Tho at a con you can find hotwater ANYWHERE. I've even went to the resturant asking for some hotwater and they gave it to me. Heck even hot water from the tap (last resort) can cook the just add hot water meals mind you it will take a bit longer then using boiled hot water.

I carry enough meals for 3 days.

    1. Home made chow mein with chinese bbq pork, soy sauce, bean sprouts, eggs, red/green peppers, and green onion.

One bag of chow mien makes 3 generous meals with all items combined. Cost $5 for me.

    2. Home made fried rice with chinese bbq pork, egg, soy sauce, mixed grean giant frozen veggies, and green onion.

Cost for me $5 and makes 4 generous meals. I freeze the rice as it stays frozen better.

    3. 1 x tub of gatorade, 1 x gatorade bottle (700ish ml and a perfect one scoop to bottle ratio wrap a piece of paper and it works as a funnel for the power to drop into the bottle), and 1 x camelbak while I fill with plain water.

    4. Trail mix and/or granola bars

    5. 3 packs of ramen (spicy seafood udon by NongShim because you get a larger portion of noodle)

    6. Frozen fruit drink boxes which also act as coolent for the food

    7. I work at a grocery store and have access to dry ice which I use to extend the cooling of the foods.

    8. A soft cooler bag IMHO is the best in my experience (trail and error) and all hotels have ice to extend cool time.

    9. A few packets of instant flavored oatmeal.

I just have the oatmeal in the morning then take a out of the cooler and keep it in the bag while I'm going to events. Because it's frozen it takes about 3 hours to defrost as I put 2 box drinks next to it so it slowly defrosts. That way I can have lunch when I want. I can speed it up by taking the drinks away from the food. Easy and the rest of the money I use on anime.

Thank you you kawaii nekogirl who kept a swiss army on her! I WOO JOO!) it adds up quickly in weight for a weekend of rations.

I switched to MRE's but man some of those things taste REAL bad. I think the turkey and gravy one sucked donkey ass and nuts. While lighter then the cans it is a real ready to eat meal to stop the pain but the good stuff is the freeze dried stuff at camp stores.

    The BEST I've found are the camp store freeze dried meals. Always good to buy them on sale and buy a few of the ones you like and save them for the cons. They are good up for 3yrs from print date. I think those army MRE's are only good up to 5yrs but then again I'm not eating a 5yr old egg salad sandwich. O_o;;

This has been done before by some people as well as myself. plug the bath tub and then plug the sink. WHen you take your shower put the can on the shower floor and take your shower. The heat will penerate into the can.

After the shower runhotwater in the sink and keep the can there while you finish freshing up yourself and get clothed. Then go back to the sink and remove the can and give it a rinse off then open up and you will have a warm meal.

Likewise here. Friends know I've a good high paying job but I'm commited to my goal of retiring early (currently 28 but investments projected at age 40, no debt, no car, no auto insurance, no rent (able to steath live in my office 80% of the time), no home insurance, but only keep health insurance only) so I save as much as I can. Even at cons I'd rather spend it on anime, food, and helping out starving artists in the artist alley with a little extra tipping to the cost of thier artwork then on hotel costs.

To the anon that posted the cost of $200-300 it is about right on the amount. IMHO it's more adjusted to $250-350 for the extra travel and tipping.

Yah it's called using your resources and not wasting the already spent heat and able to do two things at once. The reason fo rthe sink is so you can add new heat and clean water to the can to lossen up the wash water. The final rinse is just to clean the can off. Easy and works. I have a new friend that is a camper and I always thought those portable stoves cost like $100 bucks each WITHOUT FUEL but to my shock and surprise my new con friend told me of a $20 personal stove that attaches to a small one time use fuel tank that comes with stove which I was amazed. The guy told me one tank was able to be used for 3 meals/day for for 6 conventions in 2 yrs time. Not a bad investment for $20 with fuel. New tanks cost ~$7/ea.

He said it can cook cans as well. Something I'm thinking of for my future con goings.

Here's a creative tip for people who attend cons in REALLY hot places (south Texas lol):

Get some canned food like soup and Chef B crap and take it out to the parking lot. Place the can, opened, on the top/hood/back of a black or dark blue car and wait a few minutes.

TADA! A warm meal! The longer you leave it, the hotter it'll get. Just keep an eye on it so nothing gets to it.
